Zee Media spoke to Sri Lankan Tamils to understand the finer aspects of their observations from having watched Family Man 2.&nbsp;

While the Family Man 2 series release was highly anticipated in India after the successful first series, it was not the same in Sri Lanka. Hardly any Lankan Tamils knew of the series or its impending release. The few who watched it were film enthusiasts and those who had a keen interest in the genre. Some Sri Lankan Tamil journalists had not even heard of this series, but were keen on watching both seasons after being recommended the trailer.

According to IS Kumaran, a Sri lankan Tamil, who holds a degree in International Affairs, the Family Man series is clearly a work of fiction. He believes that since it is made for mass-market entertainment, the makers enjoy creative freedom, unlike a fact or perspective-based documentary.&nbsp;

Having watched both seasons, he says that the plot is not just about government versions of the Lankan war and its consequences. “The way the character Raji(played by Samantha) speaks about the horrors meted out to her family and her own self, is exposing the Sri Lankan government and army narrative on the war. It also deals with how centre-state politics works in India and the larger Indo-China geopolitical play in the Indian Ocean region” he told Zee media.&nbsp;

A Sri Lankan Tamil and movie buff (who wished not to be named) is of the firm opinion that the series does not denigrate or insult the Lankan Tamil freedom struggle. Instead, he feels that it showcases the struggle of a persecuted minority race. “The word terrorist is not used against the rebels, instead they call them as rebels” he points out to Zee Media. He also adds that the series portrays the political games that the Indian government, Lankan Government and Tamil Nadu Government played to attain their own objectives.

However, he does object to how the character that seems to draw a parallel to slain LTTE leader Prabhakaran, is portrayed. He feels that more justice could have been done to that character, given the leadership and power of Prabhakaran, which kept the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) going for nearly three decades. While commending Samantha’s fire-in-her-eyes portrayal of Raji, he says that it rightly portrays LTTE women cadre as highly trained, skilled and capable. However, he believes that the women in the LTTE held their self-respect high and would not do “anything” (as portrayed in two instances in the series) to fulfill their mission.&nbsp;

“How they have shown the rebel leader(alluding to LTTE Prabhakaran) as a runaway who went and lived a luxurious life in a foreign land is questionable. Given the strict discipline and abstinence of the LTTE, showing him and cadre enjoying liquor and smoking is not accurate” opined a Sri Lankan Tamil Journalist(on condition of anonymity) to Zee Media. However, he too maintains that the series is worth a watch and the calls for its ban by Tamil Nadu’s political parties are totally unreasonable.&nbsp;

However, it must be noted that the makers clearly stated that theirs was a work of fiction. It came with the usual disclaimer which said any resemblance to persons living/dead and actual events is purely coincidental. But, for some viewers, the LTTE similarity is hard to miss. It is owing to the rebels’ camouflage uniform, cyanide capsule neckbands, the attempt to assassinate an Indian prime minister (the connect with Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s Assassination 1991 by a woman suicide bomber), etc.

Eventually, the series did release without any hindrance. Available on Amazon Prime Video for more than a week, the series has garnered great reviews from various quarters and is on its way to become a standard-setter in the Indian OTT Landscape.&nbsp;

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday said that a "pragmatic solution" was required to sort out disagreements over part of the Brexit deal that covers border issue with Northern Ireland.

PM Boris Johnson has said that Britain will do "whatever it takes" to protect its territorial integrity in trade dispute with the European Union (EU).

The EU has to defend its common market, Merkel said, but on technical questions there could be a way forward in the dispute, she told a news conference during a Group of Seven leaders' summit.

"I have said that I favour a pragmatic solution for contractual agreements, because a cordial relationship is of utmost significance for Britain and the European Union," she said.

Merkel referred to conversation she had with Joe Biden and said that they agreed that Ukraine must continue to remain a transit country for Russian natural gas once Moscow completes Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea.

The $11 billion pipeline will carry gas to Germany directly, something Washington fears could undermine Ukraine and increase Russia's influence over Europe.

Biden and Merkel are due to meet on July 15. The meet will take place in Washington.

The G7 sought on Saturday to counter China's growing influence by offering developing nations an infrastructure plan that would rival President Xi Jinping's multi-trillion-dollar Belt and Road initiative. [L5N2NU045]

Asked about the plan, Merkel said the G7 was not yet ready to specify how much financing could be made available.

"Our financing instruments often are not as quickly available as developing countries need them," she said.

Asked if he was less optimistic than he was at the end of May that restrictions could be eased as planned, a downbeat Johnson responded: "Yes, that's certainly fair."

He added that while some data was "still open to question", a formal announcement would come on Monday.

On Friday, the government said the Delta variant was 60 percent more transmissible in households than the variant that forced the country into its last complete lockdown in January.

The research from Public Health England also showed there had been 42,323 identified cases of the Delta variant in the UK, according to data -- up from 29,892 on June 2.

The Alpha variant, first identified in Kent, southeast England, drove a huge surge of Covid cases in January, and hit early in Britain's mass vaccination campaign.

It caused a wave of Covid cases that stretched the state-run National Health Service (NHS) close to breaking point.&nbsp;

Johnson said the current situation was "dramatically different from what it was in either of the first two waves of the pandemic" because of what he called the "effectiveness of the vaccine rollout".

Faced with the Delta variant, the UK has stepped up its vaccine programme, and has now administered nearly 71 million jabs, with over 40 percent of the total population fully vaccinated.

Ports and shipping minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena said an interim claim had been lodged with X-Press Feeders, which controls the Singapore-registered MV X-Press Pearl.

The vessel has been submerged off Colombo since June 2. Prior to that, it burnt for almost two weeks. The ship released tonnes of plastic material that swamped beaches on Sri Lanka's west coast.

Sri Lankan environmentalists have called it the "worst marine disaster" in the country's history. 
"In addition to this (claim), we will also seek reimbursement of the cost of putting out the fire," Abeygunawardena said, adding that the full damage to the environment was still being assessed.

Sri Lanka has sought help from Australia in studying the impact on the local marine economy, which has been hit by a fishing ban imposed since the disaster.

Fisheries minister Kanchana Wijesekera said the ban along an 80-kilometre (50 miles) stretch of coastline was lifted on Saturday except for in the immediate vicinity of the wreckage.

"About 20,000 families of fishermen were affected by the ban," Wijesekera said. "Many of the beaches have been cleared of plastic waste from the ship."

According to officials, about 1200 tonnes of plastic pellets and other debris scooped from the beaches was being stored in 45 shipping containers.

On May 20 the X-Press Pearl reported an onboard acid leak and caught fire just as it was due to enter the Colombo harbour.

The fire was put out after 13 days, but the vessel's stern hit the bottom of the shallow sea when a tug attempted to move it to deeper waters.

Two onboard explosions saw several cargo containers fall into the Indian Ocean and plastic raw material later smothered the western seaboard of the island.

"We will take another two weeks to remove all the piles of plastic waste we have collected. Only 1,200 tonnes has been stored and a similar amount is yet to be removed," an official involved in the clean-up said.

Sri Lanka is also investigating an oil slick just north of the Colombo port to see if it is a leak from the wreckage.
