Wheeled Armoured Amphibious Platform’ (WHAP) vehicle is an 8×8 vehicle developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).&nbsp;

WHAP vehicle has been developed with a focus on ballistic armoured protection and augmented blast resistance. It has a 600-horsepower engine and automatic transmission and has a 7.62 mm Remote Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) for precision targeting.&nbsp;

''It has been made in India and is all terrain as it can move on land, water, swamps and higher mountain ranges. The weight of this vehicle is 24 tons and it has a length of 8 metres with a breadth of 3 metres. It is fully bulletproof. It can move in rivers against the waves. It has an automated system in place. It has a remote-control weapon system which has extreme precision while targeting. It can also fire tear smoke shells,'' said Shish Pal, CO CRPF.&nbsp;

The Government of India provided the Indian army with the same vehicle in 2022 for the soldiers deployed in the eastern sector of the Ladakh region. CRPF has become the first paramilitary force to induct the Wheeled Armoured Amphibious Platform vehicle.&nbsp;

The vehicle is produced as Defence Combat WHAP and is built for tough battle conditions.

The CRPF's WHAP variant, unlike the Indian army’s Infantry Protected Mobility Vehicle (IPMV), has actual amphibious capabilities as it incorporates water jets.

This addition equips the CRPF to navigate aquatic obstacles providing a tactical advantage. The specific amphibious capability would help the CRPF in operations which are sometimes in swamps, lakes, and lagoons.&nbsp;

Kashmir's famous tulip garden has added another&nbsp;feather to&nbsp;its cap, it has been included in the World Book of Records (London) as Asia's largest tulip garden. This is one of the biggest acknowledgements for the garden since its inception.&nbsp;

Situated at the foothills of the Zabarwan mountain range on the banks of Dal Lake, the tulip garden of Kashmir has finally been recognised as Asia's largest tulip garden and certified in the World Book of Records (London). The Department of Floriculture, Gardens and Parks was awarded the certificate by the Chairman and CEO, of the World Book of Records (London) at a function held in Srinagar.&nbsp;

The government of Jammu and Kashmir says the honour and reward are for the hard work of the gardeners, officials and casual labourers of the floriculture department who have worked day and night to make Kashmir's tulip garden one of the most attractive destinations in Srinagar.&nbsp;

''Tulip Garden Srinagar has been included in the World Book of Records as Asia's largest tulip garden, which has displayed 1.6 million tulips of 68 varieties. It has successfully attracted around 3.75 Lac visitors this year, its biggest achievement I can say. This is I should say a big recognition for the garden for UT in general and in particular for the Department of Floriculture," said Javaid Masood, who is the Floriculture Officer in charge of the Tulip Garden.&nbsp;

"This will be a major attraction as the tulip garden was a unique selling point for the tourism of Jammu and Kashmir, it has successfully preponed the tourism season of the valley. This award will go a long way in promoting the tulip garden. Our gardeners, officers, casual labourers and even our officers at higher levels are involved in this garden and our hard work has paid off," Masood added.&nbsp;

Tulip Garden Kashmir was established in 2008. For the last fifteen years everyone associated with the garden, like gardeners, officials have tried their best to make this garden one of the special attractions of Kashmir. Due to the tulip garden in Kashmir, the tourist arrivals in the valley have doubled around that time and it has also helped in extending the tourism season in the Valley.&nbsp;

This year, Asia's largest tulip garden saw more than 16 lakh tulips of 68 different varieties bloom and around 3.75 lakh people visited the garden during the one-month tulip season. It takes about 6-8 months every year for the Department of Floriculture to prepare the garden for opening to the general public.

The Indian army has kickstarted valley's first Kashmir Women's Cricket League&nbsp;at the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium in Srinagar. Around&nbsp;12 of the most talented women's cricket teams from different regions of Jammu and Kashmir are competing for the trophy, showcasing their remarkable talent and passion for the game.

The Kashmir Women's Cricket League finals would&nbsp;be&nbsp;attended&nbsp;by renowned Indian female cricketer Mithali Raj. The LG of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha will also be attending the event.&nbsp;

''I am coming out from my house for the first time to play cricket. I am extremely excited and working hard to win the match. I want more of these tournaments, and platforms for the girls. It never used to happen in Kashmir and now it is and I want to tell every girl to participate in these events and I am sure one day I will play national and international cricket. We have a long way to go,'' said Afreen, a player.

It's the first time that a women's league tournament has been organised by the Indian army and we have a great feeling and are extremely happy that we have been provided&nbsp;with such a platform. ''We thought that there are many tournaments for men but nothing for women, so we decided to start the Kashmir Women's Cricket League, I am thankful to JKCA who gave us the venue and administration, helping us to make this event successful. JK youth have a bright future and the Indian army has been working on social empowerment. Sports is a very important aspect, in a mobile phone world we need to push our children to outdoor activities,'' said Manoj Dobriyal,&nbsp;Indian Army.&nbsp;

Indian army starts first Kashmir Women Cricket League, female cricketers aim to play for India

The Kashmiri saffron is famous across the world and Jammu and Kashmir is the second largest producer. Now, the state government aims to further boost saffron production with its new export policy.

The government has shortlisted 60 countries where the demand for Kashmiri saffron is huge.

Saffron, also known as red gold, is one of the most expensive spices in the world. Currently, saffron is cultivated on only 4,000 hectares of land. Experts say that Kashmiri saffron is one of the best in quality and with the implementation of the new export policy, it has the potential to beat the Iranian saffron.

The Department of Agriculture says that within the next two months, the new export policy would be implemented and will provide a big boost for the saffron growers of the valley.&nbsp;

''The saffron from Kashmir Valley is famous. One of the reasons why is it considered the best in quality is because of the favourable climatic conditions it is grown in. While we have been working on increasing the production of saffron, we are also focussing on the export policy, wherein&nbsp;we shortlisted countries where we can sell our produce. Dubai, America and Israel are one of the largest buyers of Kashmir saffron,'' said Chowdhary Mohammad Iqbal, Director, the Department of Agriculture, Kashmir.&nbsp;

Saffron is used in cosmetics, food, and medicines, and is also used for rituals. After the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, symbolising its exclusivity in the international market, the prices for Kashmiri saffron have grown tremendously. Earlier, it used to sell for 60,000 rupees, whereas now it fetches around Rs 2,50,000.

Since the last decade, the area under the saffron cultivation has shrunk from 5,000 hectares to 4000. And around 90 per cent of the cultivation comes from the Pampore area of Pulwama district.&nbsp;Under the new export policy, the government has identified other districts where the land is suitable for saffron farming.

''The data does show that the saffron cultivation area has shrunk, but what we are doing is slowly expanding in the other areas. We want to secure the heritage crop and make sure to increase the space and identify those areas which have the best climatic conditions for the cultivation of saffron,'' Iqbal said.&nbsp;

The government hopes that with the new export policy, more people take up saffron cultivation.&nbsp;

As Jammu and Kashmir decked up to celebrate the 77th anniversary of India’s Independence, a video of the brother of a Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist hoisting the national flag went viral on social media.

Rayees Mattoo, brother of Javid Mattoo who is an active terrorist, was seen in the clip waving the tri-colour flag at his residence in Sopore.

On Monday (Aug 14), on the eve of the independence, Rayees spoke to ANI news agency saying that he waved the Indian flag out of his own will and that no one put pressure on him.

“I waved the ‘tiranga’ (tricolour) from my heart. There was no pressure from anyone....”

He also credited the changing atmosphere post the revocation of Article 370—the provision that granted autonomy—and said that this was the first time that he opened his shop on the eve of independence, which didn’t use to happen earlier.

Javid Mattoo alias Faisal/Saqib/Musaib is an active terrorist of Hizbul Mujahideen.

The security forces had put his name among the top 10 terrorists in the Kashmir Valley. He is said to be currently settled in Pakistan.

Rayees also has a message to the misguided youths who joined local terror outfits.

“I appeal to them, come to the mainstream under the Indian flag. Today there is development, there is no violence (in Kashmir) and there is justice as no innocent is being arrested. Only those who are doing wrong are being arrested."

In the past, slain Hizbul terrorist Burhan Wani had hoisted the Indian national flag in his native village.

The J&amp;K government has been taking out Tiranga rallies across every district with the&nbsp;pledge “Let us walk together, let our hearts beat together”.

The LG also expressed gratitude to the media fraternity for their support to the UT administration in creating a conducive environment in Jammu &amp; Kashmir.

India is celebrating the 76th anniversary of its Independence from the British rule, and security forces on the Line of Control have been put on high alert across the border area of North Kashmir. Security forces have inputs that terrorists might try to sneak in from across the border to disrupt peace in Jammu and Kashmir.

In the last one month, around a dozen infiltration bids have been foiled by the security forces on the LoC and International border. Half a dozen terrorists have been killed during these infiltration attempts.

In North Kashmir’s Kupwara district, the whole of LoC is covered with dense forest giving an edge to the terror groups to infiltrate into the Kashmir territory and this district sees the highest number of infiltration&nbsp;attempts by terrorists from across the border.

Border security forces posted on one of the forward posts in North Kashmir have been guarding the borders day and night and making sure that no such infiltration attempt is successful. And to guard the higher reaches of the Line of Control, Border Security Force trains soldiers not only to acclimatise with the environment but also to become agile in the Himalayan mountain ranges.

WION’s team reached the border area to get a first-hand account of the training provided to the soldiers of BSF. The training includes how to tackle an attack, ambush, encounter, hostage situation and infiltration from across the border.

“We are always ready to deal with the enemy. We have got the latest surveillance technology here and everything is in place to neutralize any threat that comes our way,” said Udham Kuhad, Commanding Officer, BSF, Kupwara, North Kashmir.

The Border Security forces deployed at the forward locations close to LoC are keeping a continuous vigil to secure the borders. Apart from using the new high-tech surveillance equipment, patrolling is done four times during the day in these higher reaches.

Cordon and aearch operations are carried out to sanitise the areas close to LoC. The smuggling of narcotics is also one of the major challenges for the security forces in North Kashmir. The money which is being generated via the drug trade is used to fuel terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

To keep the troopers motivated and physically&nbsp;and mentally fit in war-like situations is one of the toughest tasks. And at this location, BSF has found a way, the troopers are undergoing a rigorous morning training session every day which keeps them physically fit and mentally strong. While one group are engaged in activities the other one cheers for them. The BSF soldiers also want countrymen to be at peace as they are protecting the borders.

The security forces posted in Jammu and Kashmir, many a time face hostage situations during encounters and attacks. And special training is being given to the soldiers of the BSF to tackle the situation without harming the hostages.

“I&nbsp;want to tell my countrymen to have faith in us and we will deliver. We want all the countrymen to live without fear and just work on making India's economy better and rest we will take care of,”&nbsp;said Udham Kuhad, Commanding Officer, BSF, Kupwara, North Kashmir.

The government has provided the security forces with the latest and best equipment. The soldiers are training with these latest arms and ammunition too. In an 80 mm mortar shelling launcher, they just have to push in the coordinates of the location which they want to blast and with just a push button, they can carry out the attack. It has a range of around 5km, and training soldiers with accuracy is done on a daily basis as well.

India: LoC put on alert ahead of Independence day celebrations

Kashmir was always famous for places like Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, but with the opening of areas close to the line of control, a huge number of tourists are visiting and exploring these areas. Along with the beauty of these mountain ranges, tourists are excited to see a border that divides the two countries.&nbsp;

The guns have fallen silent on the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan for over two years now. And after these peaceful years, the government of Jammu and Kashmir, along with the department of tourism, have opened many areas close to the LoC for tourists and visitors.&nbsp;

The people living on the line of control are finally living a peaceful life and are ready to welcome tourists from across the country and world. The areas close to LoC in North Kashmir include Keran, Gurez, Tangdhar, Machil and Bangus that have been added to the new list of tourist places in the valley.&nbsp;

"We have been promoting the border areas. We don’t want haphazard development; we want to maintain our ecology. It was very difficult to come to these places few years ago but after the abrogation of article 370, we are opening border areas and tourists are loving it. Tourism is the back bone of the valley and this will help in building the economy of these areas. The response has been fantastic, people are so excited," said Raja Yaqoob Farooq, Director, Tourism, Kashmir.&nbsp;

The department of tourism has prepared a plan to build infrastructure in these areas while keeping the&nbsp;environment in mind. They are also providing employment and generating economic opportunities for the local people of these areas.

“Keran is a very important tourist destination among the bordering areas open for tourists. We are trying to provide the infrastructure. You can apply for an e-pass. Within 24 hours, you get the pass to visit. The biggest gain will be for the locals. Tourism can provide employment, it can help in building infrastructure, it will boost the local economy,” said Ayushi Sudan, DC Kupwara.&nbsp;

“I am extremely happy; I had seen this on the social media and I came to see the place with my family. It looks better than what I saw on social media. Looking at Pakistani people from so close&nbsp;is also very nice and exciting. I will tell everyone to come here. It’s without fencing border and is amazing" said Raju J, a tourist.&nbsp;

Significantly, Kashmir has witnessed record breaking tourist arrivals in the last four months. With all the major tourist destinations of the Kashmir Valley like Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg fully booked for most of the season. The government says that promoting these sites will also help in meeting the huge influx of tourists visiting the Kashmir Valley.&nbsp;

"When there used to be ceasefire violations, we used to run for our lives. It’s so peaceful now. Nothing happened in&nbsp;last 70 years, but in the last four&nbsp;years, things have changed drastically. Our roads are better, our water and electricity is better. I congratulate the central government and Indian army for their exemplary work. It’s a beautiful scene when people from both the countries wave at each other," said Mumtaz Khan, a local.&nbsp;

The Indian Army has played a major role in opening these areas to the public. The entire security system in these areas is under the Indian Army and they are not only protecting these areas but also promoting them as tourist destinations. The local people of the area say that without the Indian Army, it would not be possible to welcome tourists in these areas.

Kashmir: Border areas opened as guns fall silent, tourists flock to witness scenic beauty

Two terrorists were killed in an operation near the Line of Control (LoC), the de-facto border between India and Pakistan,&nbsp;during an infiltration bid in the Poonch sector of the Jammu region. The Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police, in a joint operation, foiled the infiltration bid&nbsp;following&nbsp;a gun battle at around 02:00 am IST.&nbsp;

The Indian Army said that two individuals were observed moving across LoC in the General area of Degwar Terva, Poonch.

“Infiltration bid eliminated in Poonch district. In a joint operation by Indian Army and JKP in the early hours of 6/7 Aug. Two infiltrating terrorists were engaged by the joint teams of IA and JKP. One terrorist fell down immediately, the second terrorist tried to run back to LC, who was engaged and hit and later seen falling down near LC. Operation&nbsp;in progress,” said Lt Col Suneel Bartwal, PRO (Defence) Jammu.&nbsp;

In north Kashmir, earlier on Sunday, another&nbsp;infiltration bid was foiled by the Indian Army near LoC In Kupwara district.

One terrorist was killed during the operation. Indian Army had said that a&nbsp;joint operation was carried out by Indian Army &amp; J&amp;K Police on 06 August 2023 in the general area of Amrohi village in Tangdhar sector, Kupwara after they received inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area.

“Security Forces successfully foiled the infiltration bid in the early morning hours, resulting in neutralisation of one terrorist and recovery of huge quantity of war-like stores like 01xAK Rifle, 06xPistols including Pakistan Currency Notes,” said the Indian Army.&nbsp;

In the Rajouri district of Jammu, one more operation was held on Sunday in which one terrorist was killed by the security forces. The Indian army recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition too.&nbsp;

“One AK series Rif, 5 Mag, 4 hand gren, 1Bag, clothes bearing Pak marking were recovered from the operation site,“ said the Indian Army.&nbsp;

Indian army and Jammu and Kashmir Police had a major success in the Poonch operation with the killing of a dreaded terrorist Muneer Hussain. He was affiliated with the Hizb-Ul-Mujahideen terror outfit and was working as the divisional commander of the outfit.&nbsp;

According to the J&amp;K police, Hussain (son of Sattar Mohammad) was a resident of Bagyal Dara, Poonch.&nbsp;

Indian Army said that Hussain had gone to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the 1990s and had masterminded a number of attacks on security forces. Authorities said that the inputs suggested that he was given the task of re-vitalising the terrorist activities in the South of Pir Panjal Ranges.&nbsp;

"The search operations led to the recovery of one AK 56, one 9 mm Pistol with Silencer, one mag of AK 56, 10 rounds of 7.62 mm, Nine rds of 9 mm, two hand grenades, eatables and medicines. Recovery of pistol with silencer indicates the model was likely to be quite high in the Tanzeem Hierarchy," said Lt Col Suneel Bartwal, PRO (Defence) Jammu.&nbsp;

The J&amp;K police said that forces prevented a major infiltration bid and neutralised the top Divisional Commander of Hizbul Mujahideen. Indian army says that the same incident also highlights the adversary's attempts of reviving terrorism in the South of Pir Panjal Ranges by exploiting the terror veterans.&nbsp;

Indian Army kills top commander of Hizb-Ul-Mujahideen in Poonch operation

Three Indian army soldiers were killed in an encounter in Kulgam district of South Kashmir. At the time of publishing of this story, the encounter was going on. The operation started on late on Friday night after security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the higher reaches of the Halan forest area of Kulgam District.&nbsp;

Indian Army along with Jammu and Kashmir Police had received an input about the presence of terrorists in the forest area.

The terrorists fired at the security forces and the situation soon turned into an encounter.

For the first time, a group of women has&nbsp;decided to publicly recognise the female artisans of the Kashmir Valley.&nbsp;

A group called 'Fearless Collective' has collaborated with the local artist Zoya Khan, an architect by profession, to lead this project in the Kashmir Valley. Zoya has started painting a four-storey building in the heart of Srinagar to celebrate and appreciate the women artisans of the Kashmir Valley. The mural being made by these artists is of the female artisans who work with crafts like namda, sozni, pashmina, silk and copperware.&nbsp;

As you can see, the mural has Kashmiri women artisans making namda, copperware and sozni embroidery and pashmina. Our motive was to send across a message by making this mural on a four-storey building so that people know about the history of our crafts and also focus on Kashmiri craft getting more recognition, '' said Zoya Khan, architect and artisan.&nbsp;

The group has worked across various countries in the world, and it is for the first time that it is working in the Kashmir Valley.&nbsp;Zoya is training other local artists who will&nbsp;be taking forward this project. The group of these women say that it's very important to represent women karigars (artisans) of Kashmir by this art intervention in a public space. The female artisans in the valley have never been at the forefront and been a silent force for making sure the craft survives.

While we have worked in over 15 countries and painted over 50 walls with 100's of different community members including indigenous communities in Brazil, refugees in Beirut, domestic workers from Syria and this is of course the first time ever that we have worked in Kashmir and we are working with a Kashmiri artist Zoya khan who is leading this project,'' said Shilo Shiv Sulaiman, founder, Fearless Collective.&nbsp;

"We are working with the women artisans of Kashmir, and we have given them the dignity as the creators of Kashmir. Very often we think about the outstanding craft and the hands that are making them. We wanted to honour those hands,'' she added.&nbsp;

These women in the future want to create many such places where the work of the women artisans of the Kashmir Valley can be put out-front for the public to see.
