<p>A bill that would outlaw caste-based discrimination in the state of California has been passed by a large margin in the Senate amid fears in scores of Indian-Americans that it will single out Hindus.&nbsp;</p>

<p>SB 403, sponsored by Senator Aisha Wahab, passed the Senate with a vote of 34-1. The bill now heads to the Democratic-controlled State Assembly and, if passed, to Governor Gavin Newsom's desk. Newsom hasn't had a public opinion on the measure.&nbsp;</p>

<p>California will become the first state to protect caste if the law is approved.</p>

<p>“There are so many people that want to heal from the trauma of caste,” a Dalit activist and the founder of the caste equity organization Equality Labs&nbsp;Thenmozhi Soundararajan told NBC after the voting.&nbsp;“What’s been incredible about this moment is to see these really beautiful inter-caste and interfaith alliances, groups that have all said that they’ve been harmed by caste and want freedom from it."</p>

<p>With the passage of this measure, caste will be added to the list of protected categories, along with race and sex, in California's current civil rights law.</p>

<p>“The more diverse California becomes and the United States becomes, we need to protect more people in the way the American dream was originally supposed to,” Senator Wahab told NBC News at the time when she introduced the bill.&nbsp;“Our laws need to expand and cover more people and go deeper.”</p>

<p>The legislation was initially introduced in the California Senate on March 22 by state senator Aisha Wahab, the first Muslim and Afghan American elected to the state senate.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But the law has its detractors as well. Some Indian American organisations have spoken out against SB 403, claiming that it discriminates against Indians and Hindus and that adding protection against caste discrimination is unnecessary in the United States.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Wahab, however, asserted that the legislation is intended to safeguard people of all nations, faiths, and cultures. The California Labour Federation, MeToo International, and the American Civil Liberties Union all endorse it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In yet another arrest of Pakistan's PTI opposition leader, former human rights minister Shireen Mazari was detained by the Islamabad Police in the early hours of Friday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mazari's daughter and lawyer Imaan Hazir-Mazari posted a video on Twitter where armed men can be seen forcibly breaking into her home to take the former minister into custody.</p>

<p>The video was apparently of a CCTV footage that showed gunmen wearing plain clothes jumping the door to arrest the female politician.</p>

<p>In another video that surfaced on Twitter, Islamabad police can be seen removing the minister from her home.&nbsp;Mazari was present at the time of the raid alongside with her daughter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, Mazari put up a defiant face at the time of her arrest. At the time of her arrest when she was led to a police car, Mazari held up a victory sign and shouted "victory for democracy."&nbsp;</p>

<p>She also denounced "state terrorism" as unacceptable.</p>

<p>Adani Enterprises' board will meet on 13th May to approve the proposal of raising fresh funds, months after the company pulled out its 20,000 crore follow-on public offer (FPO) amid the Hindenburg controversy.</p>

<p>The scrapping of FPO in February caused the port-to-power conglomerate's market worth to drop by more than $140 billion.</p>

<p>Adani Green Energy, the organization's arm for renewable energy, also made the announcement that it will seek funding after its board on May 13 approves the idea.</p>

<p>On May 12, the Supreme Court will hear the Securities and Exchange Board of India's (SEBI) request for a six-month extension to finish the investigation into the Adani Group.</p>

<p>Sebi had requested an extension from India's apex court in order to complete its probe into the claims made against the conglomerate by US-based short seller Hindenburg.</p>

<p>The securities regulatory body said that Adani Group's transactions involving listed, unlisted, and offshore businesses need further inquiries. US short-seller Hindenburg accused the Gautam Adani-led business of regulatory disclosure lapses and stock price manipulation in a report that was made public in late January.</p>

<p>The Adani Group, on the other hand, has denied the accusations and maintained that it conforms with all legal and disclosure obligations. Adani Enterprises announced last week that it has re-appointed executive chairman Gautam Adani's for another five years.</p>

<p>Along with reporting a more than doubling of net profit to 722 crore in Q4FY23, the company had strong growth in its road and airport sectors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Santos was charged with a crime in Brazil, according to court documents originally unearthed by the New York Times, for using two stolen cheques to make purchases, including a pair of sneakers he gave to a friend, at a store in the city of Niteroi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Santos would have been 19 years old at the time. Prosecutors charged in 2011 that the entire cost of the transaction was 2,144 Brazilian reais, which at the time was equivalent to roughly $1,350.</p>

<p>According to the court documents viewed by the Associated Press, that came after an investigation started in 2008 and Santos' signed a confession, in which he admitted to having stolen the chequebook of his mother's former employer from her purse and made purchases, including in the store, and recognised the fraudulent cheques as the ones he had signed.</p>

<p>The case was halted in 2013 after a court accepted the allegations against Santos in 2011. Subsequent subpoenas for him to personally appear or submit a written defence remained unanswered, and officials were constantly unable to find him.</p>

<p>Mocha is not likely to have any impact on the monsoon which usually reaches Kerala around 1 June. “Mocha is a transient system and there is still a fortnight left for the normal onset date for monsoon. We do not think the very severe cyclone will impact monsoon onset,” said Mohapatra.</p>

<p>On Friday morning, Mocha was around 520 kilometres to the west-northwest of Port Blair. The tropical heat potential, which fuels the cyclone, is at its highest level close to the coast of Myanmar, according to an IMD official.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Bay of Bengal is considerably warm with sea surface temperatures of over 30°C over most parts of the ocean.”</p>

<p>After a rare intervention by the US Supreme Court, a convicted man from Oklahoma was spared a fourth execution attempt. After the state's top lawman claimed Richard Glossip did not receive a fair trial, the court postponed his execution till 18 May.</p>

<p>A hotel owner in Oklahoma City and the employer of Glossip, Barry Van Treese, was beaten to death with a baseball bat by maintenance worker Justin Sneed in 1997. Justin Sneed, also a coworker of Glossip who was found guilty of the crime, said that Glossip had hired him to kill Treese.</p>

<p>Glossip was about to be put to death in 2015 when the execution was postponed so that security personnel could inspect the lethal injection chemicals. The order temporarily suspends the punishment while the court deliberates the case.</p>

<p>Gentner Drummond, the attorney general of Oklahoma, has reexamined the case and requested a new trial on the basis that the prosecution withheld facts concerning his accuser that would have strengthened his defence.</p>

<p>Throughout his 26 years in prison, Glossip, 60, and his family have maintained his innocence by asserting that Sneed acted alone. After his initial conviction in 1998 was overturned in 2001, Glossip was found guilty once more three years later.</p>

<p>He has had three final dinners while inside, and nine separate execution dates have been set. Republican attorney general Drummond discovered in a study made public last year that Glossip's accuser had been treated for a significant mental illness at the time of his 2004 retrial.</p>

<p>"Absent this court's intervention, an execution will move forward under circumstances where the Attorney General has already confessed error — a result that would be unthinkable," Mr Drummond wrote in his request to the court.</p>

<p>Until the court determines whether to mandate a new trial and perhaps overturn his conviction, the stay will be in effect. Pope Francis, Kim Kardashian, and Richard Branson have all shown their support for Glossip in the case, which has garnered attention on a global scale.</p>

<p>The Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) has started a month-long Tibet Matters March from Sikkim’s Gangtok to Assam’s Tezpur. Over 80 volunteers from the TYC regional chapters in India and Nepal have joined the march since it began on April 29, according to Tibet Rights Collective (TBR).</p>

<p>This came in a random nationwide survey of 1,006 US adults for the Washington Post-ABC News poll from April 28 to May 3. It shows how US President Joe Biden faces significant obstacles as his reelection campaign gets underway.</p>

<p>As many as 62 per cent of Americans say&nbsp;the 80-years-old Biden is not in good enough physical health to be effective as a president.&nbsp;In contrast, 64 per cent of Americans say former US president Donald Trump is physically fit enough to serve. It is pertinent to note that Trump would turn 78 in January 2025 at the time of the next inauguration.</p>

<p>Biden's overall ratings is currently at 36%, down from 42% in February and almost equal to the previous low of 37% in an early 2022 Post-ABC survey. 56 per cent of people disapprove of him, including 47 per cent who do so "strongly."&nbsp;</p>

Biden does not have mental sharpness to serve as president in second term: 63% Americans in poll

<p>As per controversial new research, between 54,000 and 42,000 years ago, modern people had to colonise Europe in three successive waves. That is the main finding of researchers who have been looking at caves in the Rhone valley.</p>

<p>They have found evidence that suggests Homo sapiens had to make three determined attempts to move from western Asia to the west and north before they could settle on the continent.</p>

<p>“The first two of these waves failed but the third succeeded around 42,000 years ago,” said Ludovic Slimak of the University of Toulouse who is leading the excavations in France.&nbsp;“After that, modern humans took over in Europe. The Neanderthals, who had evolved on the continent, died out.”</p>

<p>The origins of one of the important ancient stone tool industries that have been discovered in central France are also disputed in this controversial research. The lithic industry that produced these tools is called Châtelperronian, after the place where the first specimens were discovered in the nineteenth century.</p>

<p>These tools have now been attributed to Neanderthal toolmakers by many scientists. They are notable for their exquisite, narrow blades and technical manufacture.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But Slimak rejects this view. “The Châtelperronian tools are the handiwork of modern humans, and given their similarity to stone tools that were being made in the Middle East, we conclude they were brought there by Homo sapiens as they moved into Europe.”</p>

<p>Professor Chris Stringer of London’s Natural History Museum reportedly said, “This is a provocative and ambitious paper."</p>

<p>“In particular, it argues that the Châtelperronian stone industry, which is usually assumed to be the product of Neanderthals, was actually the work of Homo sapiens. Supposed associations of Neanderthal fossils with Châtelperronian tools must therefore be invalid, he is saying.”</p>

<p>The tiny 54,000-year-old pointed stone tools that have been discovered in the Grotte Mandrin cave in the Rhône Valley resemble arrowheads and have led Slimak to argue that modern humans, who first emerged from Africa around 60,000 years ago, may have been equipped with bows and arrows.</p>

<p>The ability to kill prey from a distance without putting themselves at risk would have given the newcomers a significant edge over the native Neanderthals.</p>

<p>But after around 40 years, this initial population of modern humans that arrived at the site vanished from the fossil record, and Neanderthals later took over the area.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One answer is straightforward, says Slimak. Those early waves of humans simply lacked numbers. He believes there were up to 100 men, women and children in the Grotte Mandrin settlement.</p>
