Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his joy soon after the rescue operation was over and said that the 'courage and patience' of workers who were trapped for all these days was inspirational.

As the Israel-Hamas war rages on, Hamas gave away a family of four to another Palestine-based terror organisation in Gaza instead of freeing them, the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) claimed.

Australian ports operator giant DP World Australia said on Tuesday (Nov 28) that the Nov 10 cyber attack accessed files containing personal details of employees. In a statement, DP World Australia said, "While the investigation has shown that customer data was not affected, some of the impacted data includes the personal information of current and previous employees."

DP World did not provide any details about the perpetrators but said its investigation confirmed the incident was confined to its Australian operations and did not impact any other markets where the company operates. The company also said that no ransomware was found or deployed within the organisation's network.

The Nov 10 cybersecurity forced DP World to suspend its operations in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Fremantle. After spotting the breach, the company disconnected from the internet, significantly impacting freight movements. It cleared the backlog of over 30,000 containers by Nov 20.

The ports operator giant gradually resumed its operations days after the breach.

Nearly two weeks back, a government report said that state-sponsored cyber groups and hackers increased assaults on Australia's critical infrastructure, businesses and homes.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre said in its annual threat report on Nov 15 that the reports of cybercrime surged 23 per cent to more than 94,000 in the financial year to June.

The centre estimated that there was a hack on Australian assets every six minutes.

The report said that techniques used by a state-sponsored Chinese hacking group could be used against Australia's critical infrastructure including telecommunications, energy and transportation.

Also on Nov 15, Defence Minister Richard Marles told ABC Radio that cyber threats in the country were continuing to grow. "We value, clearly, a productive relationship with China ... but China has been a source of security anxiety for our country and we prepare for that as well," Defence Minister Marles added.

Against the backdrop of Christmas songs, 100 South Korean men and women gathered at a hotel near Seoul dressed in their best with name tags hanging on their clothes, hoping to find love.

The government hopes they make babies.

They were participants at a mass blind-dating event hosted by Seongnam city, an attempt by the local government to reverse a falling birth rate in a country where the popularity of marriage and enthusiasm towards parenthood have nosedived.

The participants, in their 20s and 30s, sat quietly next to one another until a relationship coach kick started the event with a rock-paper-scissor game, quickly filling the room with chatter and laughter.

The city appeared determined to arrange a match, preparing red wine, chocolates, games, free make-up services, and even background checks for the participating singles.

Lee Yu-mi, 36, who works for the city government, said she had to apply three times to finally get a spot at the event.

"I had no idea it would be this competitive," she said.

After five rounds of events this year, 198 people among 460 left the event as "couples," agreeing to exchange contacts with their pairs, the city said.

The South Korean capital Seoul had considered a similar event but put the plan on hold after facing criticism that it would be a waste of taxpayers' money that failed to tackle the reasons behind people opting not to marry and have babies - most notably the sky-high costs of housing and education.

Hwang Da-bin, who took part in a September event, said it saved him the cost of joining other social events or signing up for professional dating agencies.

"We are facing a real demographic crisis and the government needs to do whatever it can. I don't understand people complaining over this," Hwang said.

South Korea's fertility rate dropped to a record low of 0.78 last year in yet another grim milestone for the country with the world's lowest number of expected children for each woman.

The number is far below 1.66 in the United States and 1.3 in Japan in 2021. The average rate among countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development stood at 1.58 the same year.

Jung Jae-hoon, a professor at the department of social welfare at Seoul Women's University, said it was "nonsense" to expect these events to lead to higher birth rates.

"You need to spend more money directly on supporting pregnancy, child delivery and parenting to call it a policy to boost birth rates," Jung said.

Despite criticism, thousands of people have signed up for this year's blind-dating events arranged by the Seongnam city.

Seongnam Mayor Shin Sang-jin said spreading positive views on marriage would eventually help raise the birth rates, stressing that the blind-dating events are just one of many policies his city has rolled out to reverse the plunging rates.

"Low birth rates cannot be resolved with a single policy," Shin said. "It's also the city's job to create the environment for people who want to marry find their partners."

United States President Joe Biden's son Hunter is willing to testify in the House Oversight Committee's inquiry into his actions on Dec 13, CNN reported on Tuesday (Nov 28).

United States President Joe Biden's son Hunter is willing to testify in the House Oversight Committee's inquiry into his actions on Dec 13, CNN reported on Tuesday (Nov 28). In a letter sent to the committee, Hunter's lawyers said he would only testify if done publicly. “We have seen you use closed-door sessions to manipulate, even distort the facts and misinform the public. We therefore propose opening the door. If, as you claim, your efforts are important and involve issues that Americans should know about, then let the light shine on these proceedings,” the letter said, CNN reported. An offer to testify at a public hearing does not guarantee it will happen. Federal courts have upheld the authority of House committees to subpoena private people and entities. 'Hunter trying to play by his own rules' House Oversight Chair James Comer rejected the idea that a public hearing should replace Hunter's scheduled deposition but agreed that he should have the opportunity to testify publicly at some point. “Hunter Biden is trying to play by his own rules instead of following the rules required of everyone else. That won’t stand with House Republicans. Our lawfully issued subpoena to Hunter Biden requires him to appear for a deposition on December 13,” Comer told CNN. “We expect full cooperation with our subpoena for a deposition but also agree that Hunter Biden should have the opportunity to testify in a public setting at a future date,” he added. We are glad that Hunter Biden has decided to cooperate and we look forward to hearing from him in a deposition on December 13 and subsequently at a public hearing. — Rep. Jim Jordan (@Jim_Jordan) November 28, 2023 × House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, who also issued the president's son a subpoena, said in a post on X, "We are glad that Hunter Biden has decided to cooperate and we look forward to hearing from him in a deposition on December 13 and subsequently at a public hearing." Earlier in November, the committee subpoenaed Hunter and his brother James. This was the first time that the panel directly subpoenaed members of the Biden family. The committee also subpoenaed an assistant lawyer working on Hunter’s criminal case after whistleblowers with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) alleged political interference in the case. Here's a look at the timeline so far: > Nov 12: Forty-one workers were trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi after a portion of the under-construction tunnel collapsed following a landslide. The rescue operation started immediately and authorities said that all the trapped construction workers were safe and basic supplies like oxygen, food, and water were being given to them. > Nov 13: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the incident spot and took stock of the situation. Excavators had been removing debris to carve out a path to reach the workers. "There is enough water while oxygen and food for instant energy like dry fruits are being supplied to them," a disaster management official told Reuters. > Nov 14: Excavators started drilling with the help of auger machinery to fix a wide steel pipe that would help pull out the trapped workers. A team of geologists from the state government and educational institutions had arrived to determine the cause of the accident. Families of the trapped workers urge swift rescue operation. Workers remained safe with food, water, and oxygen being supplied through a pipe. Dozen workers outside the Silkyara tunnel called for their colleagues to be rescued quickly. > Nov 16: A new drilling machine was installed after the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) was dissatisfied with the first one. Ranjit Sinha, the top disaster management officer in Uttarakhand, told Reuters the new machine would cut through the debris at 2.5 metres an hour, as opposed to one metre using the previous machine. > Nov 17: Rescuers drill through 24 metres of debris. Four millimetre (mm) pipes are inserted into the tunnel. However, the rescue efforts are hampered when one of the pipes hits an obstacle. A report from the NHIDCL said that during efforts to restart the drilling machine, a "large-scale cracking sound" was heard which created a situation of panic in the tunnel. > Nov 18: Drilling remains suspended. The workers remained safe and were able to establish communication via radios. Protesting workers alleged rescue teams were keeping them in the dark about the pace of progress of the rescue. > Nov 19: Drilling remains suspended. Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari reviewed the rescue operation and said that boring horizontally with the huge auger machine appeared to be the best option. > Nov 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with Chief Minister Dhami to review the progress of the rescue operation. Experts surveyed the collapse site to gather information about the tunnel collapse from every angle and later discussed possible routes of rescue for the trapped workers. Rescuers pushed through a new pipeline to the trapped workers. They had been relying on nuts, puffed rice, chickpeas and other dry food via a smaller pipe. > Nov 21: Authorities released the first video of the 41 workers trapped inside the tunnel after a camera was sent into the tunnel through a new pipeline. Two explosions were carried out at the Balakot end of the tunnel. Workers were told to practise yoga and meditation for anxiety. > Nov 22: Rescue teams drilled 32 metres of an estimated 60 metres that must be cleared to push through a pipe wide enough for the workers to crawl out. However, drilling was hampered after some iron rods came in the way of the auger machine. > Nov 23: Drilling resumed and ambulances and medical support were kept on standby. Rescue operation entered the final stages. > Nov 24: Rescue efforts were again hampered after the auger machine faced a hurdle, soon after the drilling resumed. > Nov 25: A rescue official told Reuters that the operation would be further slowed as rescue teams were considering drilling through the last 10 metres of debris manually. A family member of the trapped worker said that everyone (trapped workers) inside the tunnel was very worried. > Nov 26: Rescuers started drilling vertically from the top of the mountain where the workers were trapped. A National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) official said, "86 metres will have to be reached through vertical drilling to reach trapped workers." > Nov 27: Rescuers brought in rat miners to drill through a narrow pipe by hand and help pull out the trapped workers. The NDMA said that there would be rain the area in the area in the next day or two but added it would not affect the operation. > Nov 28: All 41 workers were rescued and were taken to hospital for treatment. Rescuers drilled through rocks and debris to finally reach the workers. (With inputs from agencies)

A man in Nottingham on Tuesday (Nov 28) admitted to killing three people and attempting to murder three others in a spate of attacks in the city in June. According to a report by the news agency AFP, Valdo Calocane, 32, pleaded not guilty to murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility. Calocane's lawyer Peter Joyce said his client "does not dispute the physical facts of the prosecution's case". However, Joyce told the Nottingham Crown Court that he was suffering from "extreme" mental illness at the time. The case was adjourned until January 16 next year, after the prosecution requested more time to decide if the pleas were acceptable, AFP reported. The June attacks On June 13, two 19-year-old students at Nottingham University - Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber - and a school caretaker Ian Coates aged 65 were stabbed to death in early morning attacks. Three pedestrians in the city centre were also injured after they were mowed down by a van allegedly stolen from Coates. The attacks resulted in the police locking down the entire city. Calcone, a former student of engineering at the university, was arrested when he abandoned the vehicle and approached officers with a knife. On June 16, the 32-year-old man was charged with three counts of murder. “These charges are a significant development and arise as a result of our thorough investigation into these horrific incidents that occurred in our city,” Nottinghamshire Chief Constable Kate Meynell said. In a statement, Nottingham University said that it was devastated that the attacker was its former student.

Eleven workers were killed and 75 others were injured in a platinum mine in South Africa's Rustenburg on Monday (Nov 27) after an elevator suddenly dropped 650 feet while carrying them to the surface. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, the incident happened at the end of workers' shifts. In a statement, Impala Platinum Holdings (Implats) CEO Nico Muller said the incident was the darkest day in the company's history, adding an investigation was launched.

Mining operations at the site were suspended on Tuesday, suspension might extend to Wednesday.

The 75 injured workers were hospitalised. Implats spokesperson Johan Theron said that some of the injured had serious compact fractures and pointed out it was a highly unusual incident.

"It's impossible to quantify the impact on production save to say (the) shaft on its own is a very large complex and contributes roughly 15% of Impala Rustenburg's production," Theron said.

"To the extent that it's stopped for any length of time, it will have a corresponding impact on the entire company," he added.

The deaths at this mining site add to the 41 deaths that have been recorded in South Africa's mining industry this year so far, the news agency Reuters reported. Last year, 49 workers died in the country's mines.

North Korea is seeing a strange uptick in the number of citizens suffering from hair loss, according to reports on Monday (Nov 27) citing South Korean experts. Speaking to Radio Free Asia (RFA), experts said how the phenomenon appeared to derive from multiple sources, including infections that caused hair loss as an after-effect and use of soap and laundry detergent.

Speaking to RFA, Dr Choi Jeong Hoon from the Public Policy Research Institute at Seoul's Korea University, said that it is "not easy" for North Koreans to find "mild" chemical products.

Dr Hoon, who was earlier in North Korea and fled to the south, said that ordinary North Korean citizens cannot afford to worry about hair loss and the cost of treatment is expensive.

Another expert said that the military caps might also damage hair due to lack of proper ventilation, which leads to bacterial buildup and clogged pores that can result in thinning hair, Fox News reported.

Ahn Kyung Soo, who runs a blog on health news in North Korea, said that many treatments are more akin to oriental medicines. The report by Fox News also said that hair loss is not just a problem in North Korea, but also South Korea.

In recent years, South Korea has seen sudden and widespread hair loss among citizens. Hair loss became an issue in last year's presidential election. Lee Jae-myung, a candidate in the election who is not bold, garnered from voters after proposing that the government should pay for treatment of hair loss.

An ethnic minority armed group in Myanmar has seized control from the country's ruling junta of a lucrative border crossing to China, local media and a security source said Sunday.

Clashes have raged across Myanmar's northern Shan state, close to the Chinese border, after an armed alliance of three ethnic minority groups launched an offensive against the military in October.

The groups have seized dozens of military positions and a town important for trade with China, choking commerce routes for the cash-strapped junta.

An offensive by the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) -- one of the three allied groups -- captured the Kyin San Kyawt border gate, a local media outlet affiliated with the group said.

"MNDAA also reported they seized one more border trade gate, which is called Kyin San Kyawt, in Mongko area, Muse district this morning," the Kokang news reported Sunday.

It added that the alliance -- including the Arakan Army (AA) and Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) -- had taken other positions in the border trade zone after the assault began on Friday.

MNDAA had raised its flag at the border trade zone at Kyin San Kyawt, a security source told AFP.

The gate was re-opened in 2022 after the pandemic, and is a major trading point along the Myanmar-China border.

Earlier in the week, junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun told state media that roughly 120 trucks, parked near the border crossing, had gone up in flames and blamed armed groups.

The uptick in fighting has battered Myanmar's already struggling economy, damaging vital cross-border commerce and denying the military much-needed taxes and foreign exchange.

Local reports say goods that pass through the Kyin San Kyawt crossing include machinery, electrical appliances, agricultural tractors and consumer items.

A doctor in northern Virginia is no longer considered a citizen of the United States. The reason - the simple process of renewing a passport took a wrong turn. A doctor in northern Virginia is no longer considered a citizen of the United States. The reason - the simple process of renewing a passport took a wrong turn. According to a report by The Washington Post on Sunday (Nov 25), Dr Siavash Sobhani was born in the US, went to university and practised medicine in the country for over 30 years. However, Dr Sobhani, 62, is now stateless. Speaking to The Washington Post, Sobhani said “I’m in limbo." Sobhani, who specialises in internal medicine, had applied for a new passport in February and had no reason to expect that he would face any difficulties. He had renewed his passport multiple times. Sobhani's passport was set to expire in June 2024, and he wanted to make sure it was renewed before his family took a trip a month later. However, he did not receive a new passport and lost his citizenship. A letter from State Department 'shocks' Sobhani As per the report, Sobhani received a letter from the US State Department which said that the 62-year-old should not have been granted citizenship at the time of his birth because his father was a diplomat with the Embassy of Iran. The letter directed him to a website from where he could apply for lawful permanent residence in the US. “This was a shock to me,” he told the publication. "I’m a doctor. I’ve been here all my life. I’ve paid my taxes. I’ve voted for presidents. I’ve served my community in Northern Virginia. During Covid, I was at work, putting myself at risk, putting my family at risk," he added. Sobhani applied for permanent residency as told and said he did not want to do anything that might upset government officials. He also said that he had spent over $40,000 on legal fees and still did not know when his case might be resolved. A look back into family history After receiving the letter from the State Department, Sobhani started digging into his family’s history. He discovered that his older brother, who was born in Kansas when their father was a military student, had a congenital condition that required surgery. To extend the family's stay in the US, Sobhani's father got a temporary job at the Iranian Embassy and worked there in October and November 1961. A birth certificate showed that Sobhani was born at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in November 1961. He told The Washington Post that when he was a child, he and his family lived in Turkey for several years before they returned to the US. Sobhani attended the Georgetown Preparatory School and later went on to earn degrees from George Washington University and Boston College before attending Georgetown Medical School. He wrote letters to two Virginia senators, requesting their help. Sobhani said he had the utmost respect for American laws and pointed out that he dedicated his career to helping people in Virginia and the DC region and has been directly involved in the care of tens of thousands of lives, currently with an active patient panel of more than 3,000 patients.” (With inputs from agencies)

Police in Pakistan were investigating the killing of an 18-year-old woman who was hacked to death by the elders in her village as she and her friend appeared in a photograph on social media. According to the news agency Reuters, the woman was killed after the council of elders, known as jirga, ordered that she and her friend should be killed. The police said that some relatives of the victim were under suspicion.

Masood Khan, deputy superintendent of police in the Kolai-Palas district, said, "Some people had uploaded pictures of the two girls." Khan added, "They shot dead one of them while police rescued the second one."

The caretaker chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Syed Irshad Hussain Shah, said he had ordered police to arrest those responsible. Khan said an investigation was on, adding that male relatives of the 18-year-old were believed to be involved in the killing.

The second woman had been returned to her family after a judge investigated her safety, he said.

According to rights groups, hundreds of women in Pakistan are victims of honour killing, which is carried out by relatives professing to be acting in defence of a family's honour. These killings are often carried out in the country's deeply conservative rural areas.

Such killings are mostly carried out over perceived offences such as elopement, fraternisation with men outside marriage or other infractions of religious and cultural values on female modesty.
