Trigger warning: Some readers may find details of this report disturbing. Discretion is advised. An Islamic Jihad militant who was captured in the Gaza Strip had admitted that his squad committed rape and murdered victims during Hamas' October 7 terror attack, claimed a report by The Jerusalem Post on Friday (Dec 29) citing KAN, an Israeli state-owned publication. Since the war between Israel and Hamas started, there have been allegations that Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups used rape as a weapon of war. Some of the captured militants, who were investigated, said they received permission to abuse corpses to create fear in Israeli societies, the report further claimed. Israel's top national police unit Lahav 433 collected evidence of dozens of cases of sexual offences and sexual abuse from the investigations and survivor testimonies. Click here to follow all updates on the Israel-Hamas war A survivor of the Oct 7 attack testified to the police about a rape she saw. Her testimony was verified by another survivor, the report claimed. 'A pattern of extreme brutality against women' The above revelations come as a report by The New York Times (NYT) said that attacks against women were not isolated events but part of a broader pattern of gender-based violence on Oct 7. The NYT relied on videos, photographs, interviews with over 150 people including witnesses, medical personnel, soldiers and rape counsellors. The publication identified at least seven locations where Israeli females appeared to have been sexually abused or mutilated. Speaking to The NYT, four witnesses described in graphic detail seeing women raped and murdered at two different places along Route 232. In this same place, Gal Abdush, an Israeli woman, was found dead. Abdush was found lying on her back, clothes torn, legs spread and vagina exposed, the report said. Her face was beyond recognition. The Israeli police said they believed that the woman was raped. The report further said that the Lahav 433 police unit had been steadily gathering evidence but did not provide a number of how many women were raped, saying that most were dead. The Israeli police, meanwhile, said that during the shock and confusion of the Oct 7 attack, they did not focus on collecting semen samples from women's bodies, requesting autopsies, or closely examining crime scenes. Authorities told the publication that at that moment, the police were intent on repelling Hamas militants and identifying the dead. As the world welcomed the year 2024 early Monday (Jan 1), certain countries and cities did not celebrate New Year due to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

As the world welcomed the year 2024 early Monday (Jan 1), certain countries and cities did not celebrate New Year due to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. According to reports, Pakistan and Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) banned New Year celebrations. In Iraq, many Christians cancelled their festivities due to the conflict, a report by PBS Newshour said. In Israel, seconds after ringing in the New Year on a lively street in Tel Aviv, some youngsters ran for cover while others kept the party going with a shrug as missile defence systems intercepted a barrage of rockets overhead. According to a report by the news agency AFP, Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas claimed responsibility for the missile strikes saying they had fired M90 rockets in "response to the massacres of civilians" carried out by Israel. ‘War will continue throughout 2024’ The Israeli military confirmed the attack without initially reporting any casualties or damage. The conflict started in early October last year and now the Israeli army has warned that its offensive against Hamas militants would continue throughout 2024. In a New Year's message, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Daniel Hagari that some of the 300,000 army reservists would get a break from the war, in order to prepare for the "prolonged fighting" ahead. The army "must plan ahead, understanding that we will be required for additional tasks and warfare throughout this year," Hagari said. The rest of the world welcomes New Year While certain countries did not celebrate New Year due to the Gaza war, others welcomed 2024 with fireworks, and music with hopes of new beginnings and a peaceful year ahead. Fireworks illuminated skies over the United States, India, France, Brazil, Australia and other countries. In the US, thousands of visitors lined up to watch the annual dropping of a giant illuminated ball in Times Square in New York City. AFP reported that in Manhattan, police were towing suspicious cars, monitoring pro-Palestinian protesters who have taken to the city's streets several times since the Gaza war started. In Australia, over a million partygoers packed in around the harbour in Sydney, the self-proclaimed "New Year's capital of the world," to watch eight tonnes of fireworks. In Denmark, popular Queen Margrethe II, Europe's longest-serving monarch, chose her New Year's Eve address to announce her coming abdication. (With inputs from agencies)

In late December last year, an Airbus A340 bound for Nicaragua was detained in France over concerns that it was part of a human trafficking operation. The aircraft operated by Romanian company Legend Airlines was held at Vatry airport, east of Paris, where it had stopped for refuelling. It had arrived from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and had 303 passengers of Indian nationality. Eleven accompanied minors were reportedly among the passengers. The passengers were investigated by French authorities for days. Also read: France plane row: Indian police search for missing 2-year-old from alleged 'donkey flight' Of the 303 passengers, 276 came back to Mumbai last week. Earlier, this was suspected to be a case of human trafficking. However, a report by The Guardian on Monday (Jan 1) said that the passengers were not being trafficked against their will, but were rather attempting to migrate to the United States. This case has brought back the focus on Nicaragua's role in the migrant crisis in the US. The past and the present Nicaragua is the closest country connected by land to the US that does not impose strict entry requirements upon citizens of many countries who are not permitted to fly to other destinations without a visa, the report said. Citing experts, the report said that Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has taken a contrarian approach in an attempt to weaponise migration and force negotiations over US sanctions imposed on members of his inner circle in 2020. Speaking to the publication, Ana María Méndez, the director for Central America at the Washington Office on Latin America, said, “Ortega is being very astute by playing with what hurts the United States the most.” Also read: Gujarat police grill 20 people who were on Nicaragua-bound flight In 2014, Nicaragua imposed visa requirements on Cuban citizens to help stem the flow of migrants heading to the American border. However, since then, the relations between the two countries deteriorated due to Ortega’s rigging of the 2021 election as he sought a fourth consecutive term. Ortega rescinded visa requirements for Cuban citizens following political upheaval in Cuba in 2021. Méndez said that charter flights from the island started soon after as an “escape valve” for the Cuban government which preferred citizens leave rather than protest in the streets. People from other countries, including Haiti, also followed suit to shorten their journey to the US. The report further said that on Oct 30 last year, Haiti imposed a ban on charter flights to Nicaragua which led to a significant drop in the number of people travelling to the Central American country. US announces visa restriction policy Nearly a month after Haiti imposed a ban on such flights, the US State Department announced a visa restriction policy targeting individuals running charter flights into Nicaragua designed primarily for irregular migrants. Also watch: Indians from grounded plane seeking asylum in France freed on 'formal grounds' × "In a growing trend, charter flight companies have been offering flights—and charging extortion-level prices—that put migrants on to a dangerous overland path north to the US border. Many of these migrants lack a legal basis for entering or remaining in the United States and are often returned to their home countries, having wasted significant personal resources and put themselves and their families at risk," a statement from the State Department on Nov 21 said. The report also said that several charter companies stopped flights after Washington's directive but some didn't, including Legend Airlines. Passengers paid huge sums of money to reach US Speaking to the news agency AFP, a police official from the Indian state of Gujarat said that Indian passengers aboard the Legend Airlines flight to Nicaragua paid millions of rupees to agents to help them reach the US. Passengers had paid "four million to 12.5 million rupees" ($48,000-150,000) to agents to help them reach the southern border of the United States from South America, Gujarat state police superintendent Sanjay Kharat said last week. Also read: Nicaragua flight controversy: EXPOSED modus operandi prompts nearly 600 Indians in Dubai to return "We want to know how these people came in contact with the agents, or whether the agents contacted them, and what their plan was after reaching Nicaragua," he added. Kharat said that of the 276 passengers who returned to India, 66 were from the western state of Gujarat. "We have identified people who could give us some information into the illegal racket and they are being questioned," the police official further told the news agency. The other Indian passengers were from the northern state of Punjab, where police said an investigation was on.
