Biggest Single-Day Snowfall in Decades on Dec 30, 2023 

South Korea’s capital city Seoul received its biggest single-day snowfall for December in over 40 years on Saturday (Dec 30, 2023). The country’s weather agency recorded a snowfall of 12.2 centimetres (4.8 inches) in Seoul on Saturday. 

No Deaths or Injuries Reported 

There were no reports of deaths or injuries due to the heavy snowfall in Seoul on Saturday. South Korea’s safety agency, however, said that Saturday’s snow in Seoul and other areas had caused traffic congestion. 

Advisory Issued for the Whole of Seoul 

The weather agency issued a heavy snow advisory for Seoul’s entire area on Saturday before it was lifted later in the day. Other regions in South Korea also received snow or rain on Saturday. 

When was the Previous Record Set? 

Previously, Seoul recorded the heaviest single-day snowfall on Dec 19, 1981, with the maximum depth of newly fallen snow at 18.3 centimetres.
