Troubled with rising temperatures, the calls for naming of the heatwaves are rising among the scientists in Greece.

The scientists of the country have begun discussing the need to name and rank heatwaves. They are better known for their invisibility.

The rampant wildfires, which are triggered by the heatwaves, have made the realities of the climate crisis come to fore.

The move could act as a preventative measure to enable policymakers and affected populations to get prepared for the 'silent killer’ heatwaves.

Since June, Greece has witnessed two bouts of extreme heat. Both were unusually prolonged and intense.

Last week, a new rise in temperatures saw Athens once again fall victim to fires as devastating blazes broke out north-west of the capital.

Dr Kostas Lagouvardos, research director, National Observatory, Athens told the Observer, “It is clear the extreme heat has been underestimated.”

It is essential that people are aware of the dangers posed by it. “We believe people will be more prepared to face an upcoming weather event when the event has a name. They’ll become more aware of the possible problems it could cause to their lives and to their properties … heatwaves cause a lot of deaths; they don’t make noise and they may not be visible but they’re a silent killer,” Lagouvardos said.

In what could be termed as an attempt to turn a blind eye towards the humanitarian crisis emerging from the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, Greece said, it completed a 40-km-long wall on its border with Turkey.

The country has also installed a surveillance system to prevent possible asylum seekers from trying to reach Europe.

The current situation in Afghanistan has sparked fears that Europe may face a migration crisis similar to that in 2015 as people are fleeing persecution or further conflict.

Michalis Chrisochoidis, citizens’ protections minister, Greece said, the country had taken action to stop a repeat of scenes six years ago. A fence of almost eight miles had already been in place.

Chrisochoidis added, “We cannot wait, passively, for the possible impact. Our borders will remain safe and inviolable.”

Last week, the Greek government said it would not allow refugees to cross into Europe and would turn people back. In a statement, migration minister Notis Mitarachi said, “Our country will not be a gateway to Europe for illegal Afghan migrants.”

On Friday, the issue was raised by Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in a discussion with Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Turkish president said Afghanistan and Iran, which are a key route for Afghans into Turkey, should be supported or a new migration wave was certain, according to a statement from his office.

Even as several new cases of violence against women have come up, a news report says Pakistan has seen a significant decline in the number of cases of violence against women registered in three years.

The report by ‘The News’ cited the statistics issued by the Federal Ministry of Human Rights. The ministry said, the cases of violence against women in Pakistan fell over 70% in three years.

However, the data from provincial helplines for women shows a horrific state of women’s rights, especially in Sindh and Punjab.

Recently, the Pakistan government has been under fire over the spike in cases of violence against women, several of them have occurred in public places.

From the case of Noor Mukadam's murder to Tiktoker, who was assaulted by around 400 men on Pakistan’s Independence Day, several cases of violence against women have surfaced.

A new case of a woman getting harassed while travelling in a rickshaw in Lahore on Independence Day has also come up. In a video, a man can be seen jumping onto her rickshaw to kiss the woman forcibly.

These recent cases have depicted the state's failure to protect women and brought to light the culture of impunity and the society's tendency to curtail women's independence and inflict pain on them. These incidents have also drawn outrage from citizens, who call for immediate action.

US President Joe Biden announced on Friday that he is nominating Nicholas Burns as ambassador to China and Rahm Emanuel as top envoy to Japan.

For months, the two top diplomatic positions have been in the process of finalisation but were made official only in an announcement by the White House in the midst of the biggest foreign policy crisis of the administration till now.

Career diplomat Burns has served presidents of both the parties. If he gets confirmed, the diplomat would assume one of the most critical ambassador posts in the administration. The rise of China is highly likely to be at the centre of several important policy discussions.

Burns, who is a former member of the foreign service, has previously served as State Department spokesman, Ambassador to NATO and to Greece, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, and on the National Security Council staff on Soviet and Russian Affairs.

Meanwhile, Emanuel, who is a former Chicago mayor, a senior adviser for President Bill Clinton, chief of staff to President Barack Obama and a member of Congress representing Illinois, has drawn the ire of progressive Democrats. He was also considered for a number of jobs within the Biden administration.

When Emanuel faces confirmation hearing, his track record in politics may get overshadowed by a series of controversies during his tenure as Chicago mayor.

Shutting the door on Congress for an alliance in Uttar Pradesh for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in May, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Saturday said Congress will not be a part of SP-BSP alliance.

Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati were addressing a joint press conference in Lucknow on Saturday.

''We won't gain anything by including Congress in our alliance. Both BSP and SP have experienced in the past that Congress's vote is not transferable,'' she said.

To defeat the arrogance of BJP, it was necessary for BSP and SP to come together, she said and added BJP can go to any extent to ''create differences in our workers we must be united and counter any such tactic''.

Accusing both Congress and the BJP of indulging in corruption, she said be it BJP or Congress, whoever rules, their policies are mostly the same. For example, we are seeing how both indulged in corruption in defence deals. Congress imposed declared emergency, today there is undeclared emergency, she said.

Attacking the BJP government at the Centre, she said SP-BSP alliance will give sleepless nights to Modi-Shah.

''SP-BSP have buried the hatchet and come together. BJP fears this alliance and this press briefing will give sleepless nights to Modi and Amit Shah,'' she said.

The preliminary death toll from the major earthquake that struck southwestern Haiti last weekend surged to 1,941 on Tuesday as the search for survivors resumed after a tropical storm passed and quake-hit Haitians clamored for food, shelter and medical aid.

Hospitals struggled to tend to all those injured, the official tally of which rose to 9,915, with many people still missing or under the rubble, the Civil Protection Service said on Tuesday afternoon.

"There weren't enough doctors and now she's dead," said Lanette Nuel, sitting listlessly next to her daughter's corpse outside the main hospital of Les Cayes, one of the towns worst hit by both the tremor and the storm's heavy rains and winds.

The 26-year-old deceased woman, herself a mother of two, had been crushed by debris during the magnitude 7.2 quake. Now, she lay under a white sheet on the floor.

"We came in yesterday afternoon, she died this morning. I can't do anything," her mother said.

The quake on Saturday brought down tens of thousands of buildings in the poorest country in the Americas, which is still recovering from a temblor 11 years ago that killed over 200,000 people.

Relief efforts were already complicated due to a weak state and difficult road access from the capital to the south due to gang control of key points. Flash flooding and landslides in the wake of Tropical Storm Grace, which by Thursday afternoon had continued on past Jamaica, further complicated matters.

"Countless Haitian families who have lost everything due to the earthquake are now living literally with their feet in the water due to the flooding," said Bruno Maes, the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) representative in Haiti.

"Right now, about half a million Haitian children have limited or no access to shelter, safe water, healthcare and nutrition."

The United Nations said it had allocated $8 million in emergency funds to provide essential healthcare, clean water, emergency shelter and sanitation for all affected people.

"We will continue to scale up our response to the hardest-hit areas," UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement.

The hospital in Les Cayes, about 150 km (90 miles) west of the capital Port-au-Prince, was even more overwhelmed on Tuesday than before as patients who had been camping outside moved indoors overnight to escape the tropical storm.

Director Peterson Gede said medics were doing the best they could, but it was not enough.

"We couldn't handle all the patients," he said. "And we have been receiving supplies, but it's not enough."

At a tent city in Les Cayes containing many children and babies, over a hundred people scrambled to repair makeshift coverings made of wooden poles and tarps that were destroyed by Grace overnight. Some took cover under plastic sheets.

Mathieu Jameson, deputy head of the committee formed by the tent city residents, said hundreds of people there were in urgent need of food shelter and medical care.

"We don't have a doctor. We don't have food. Every morning more people are arriving. We have no bathroom, no place to sleep. We need food, we need more umbrellas," said Jameson, adding the tent city was still waiting for government aid.

The two leaders "discussed the need for continued close coordination among allies and democratic partners on Afghanistan policy going forward, including ways the global community can provide further humanitarian assistance and support for refugees and other vulnerable Afghans," the White House said in a statement.

The decision by US President Joe Biden, a Democrat, to stick to the troop withdrawal deal struck by his Republican predecessor Donald Trump has stirred widespread criticism at home and among US allies.

The United States and Western allies resumed evacuating diplomats and civilians on Tuesday, the day after scenes of chaos at Kabul airport as Afghans thronged the runway.

As they rush to evacuate, foreign powers are assessing how to respond to the transformed situation on the ground after Afghan forces melted away in just days, with what many had predicted as the likely fast unraveling of women's rights.

A Downing Street spokesperson said Johnson in the call with Biden "stressed the importance of not losing the gains made in Afghanistan over the last 20 years, of protecting ourselves against any emerging threat from terrorism and of continuing to support the people of Afghanistan," a Downing Street spokesperson said.
