Indian women`s hockey team player Savita, who stood rock-solid guarding the goal during the Tokyo Olympic Games, said on Wednesday that with the current Olympic cycle spanning just three years, the team`s priority will be to regroup, analyse the Tokyo performance and "hit the ground running" immediately.

With the 2024 Paralympic three years away Savita said, "I actually can`t wait to return to the camp in SAI (Sports Authority of India), Bengaluru. It has become a place of comfort for us. There has been lot of celebrations following the Olympics (India finished fourth) and now it`s time to get back to reality. Next year is crucial with the Asian Games and our priority will be to win gold so we automatically qualify for the Paris Olympics. We will resume training with that target in mind," she said.

The team`s resilience to bounce back from a series of losses in the league stage to beat Ireland (1-0) and South Africa (4-3) changed the course of the Olympic Games for them. Making it to the quarterfinal was the team`s first priority and getting past the mighty Australians 1-0 in the first knockout game ensured the entire nation rallied behind them ahead of the semifinal clash against Argentina women.

Looking back at the turn of events, Savita said, "Now that I have finally had some time to reflect on our performance, I do feel we achieved something outstanding, and the best part was the journey to get till here over the past five years. We have endured a lot as a team and as individuals faced tremendous odds to reach this level. I think we will always cherish this journey.

"Though we lost very closely to Argentina in the semifinals, we wanted to give our everything against Great Britain (in the bronze-medal match) and we really wanted that medal around our necks and after beating Australia, we really believed this was achievable," added Savita, who has been nominated for the FIH Women`s Goalkeeper of the Year award. She has been nominated alongside Argentina`s Belen Succi and Great Britain`s Maddie Hinch.

India had finished 12th at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and few had expected them to be medal contenders in Tokyo.

"But now I feel the expectations will grow (after India finished fourth in Tokyo). People have seen that we can perform at top tournaments, and I believe we can live up to these expectations. We now have the experience, and the team is poised to achieve bigger feats. The experience in Rio made us believe in ourselves and we really worked hard to get to this level, now we will work on taking it to the next level," added Savita.

"It has been 20 years of training, matches, travel, wins, losses, strapped feet, jet lag, joy and brotherhood. Today I officially retire from the game I love the most. Bittersweet, but grateful," Steyn said in a statement.

Steyn has now talked about his time in India and how the crowd loved him. “India is crazy! It’s the closest you’re going to be to feeling like a rock star. You’re treated like a Hollywood or Bollywood star. Cricket is just crazy there. You go to the airport and you’re bombarded, you go to practice and there are 10 000 people watching. It’s doubtful I’ll ever have that experience in my life again with anything that I do,”.

Dale Steyn, who picked up 699 wickets across all three formats and is his country's highest wicket-taker, also talked about some of the greatest batsmen in the game of cricket and said that they did not always let a bowler settle into a rhythm.

“Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting were amazing batters (and sometimes you’d just nod in appreciation). They’re aware of your skills too so they’re trying to come out of this contest between batter and bowler unscathed, trying to get away with it without getting out. They only have one chance, where I at least get six balls,” Steyn was quoted as saying in SA Cricketmag.

Steyn's 20-year long career was marred with injuries. His issues with his shoulder restricted him to only 11 tests after 2015.

West Ham United manager David Moyes criticised the quality of the London Stadium pitch after his side were held to a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

Crystal Palace midfielder Conor Gallagher scored his team`s first two league goals of the season as they ended West Ham`s perfect start to the season in an entertaining London derby.

"We didn`t pass the ball as well as we did the other night. There`s several reasons for that... The pitch at the London Stadium is really, really poor. It`s not an excuse because we played very well on it on Monday night (against Leicester City)," Moyes said.

"Today in the dry, a bit of heat it is not good. You could probably see the amount of times the ball bounced over people`s heads and it was very high off the ground. I think we never really got a good enough rhythm in our play.

"I`ve not enjoyed the quality of the pitch at all, and I`ve known about it. Even the first game I wasn`t happy about it. It`s just not good enough, it is certainly below Premier League standards at the moment."

West Ham are currently joint top of the Premier League table as they head into the first international break of the season. They will take on Southampton at St Mary`s Stadium on Sept. 11.

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers said his side have not been playing anywhere near the standard that he expects after they secured a narrow 2-1 Premier League victory over Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday.

The visitors bounced back from a 4-1 loss at West Ham United earlier this week, holding on for their second league win of the season thanks to goals from Jamie Vardy and Marc Albrighton either side of a penalty from Norwich`s Teemu Pukki.

"I`m delighted with the three points, and we showed resilience... But we were nowhere near the standard and level I would expect us to play. We`ve not been at our best so far but we have won two of our three games," Rodgers said.

"That will come over the course of the season, with a little bit more time and fitness... I have no doubts about this team. We can`t win games just on talent alone.

"We were disappointed with Monday (at West Ham), but the fans will go home happy after seeing that resilience. We were not at our free-flowing best, but the character and spirit pleases us."

The victory moved Leicester up to eighth place in the Premier League. They will host champions Manchester City on Sept. 11.

England managed to equal the five-match series (1-1) against India after handing the visitors a crushing defeat in the third Test match that was played at Headingly, Leeds.

The Men in Blue were expected to continue their resistance from Day 3. They kicked off Day 4 with a trail of 139 runs and 8 wickets in hand.

Kohli and Pujara were expected to build on the 99-run partnership they had during Day 3. However, Pujara got out without adding any runs on the scoreboard.

Skipper Virat Kohli soon followed Pujara towards the dugout, shortly after scoring a half-century. India witnessed a batting collapse. From 215/2, they were bowled out for 278 runs in the second innings within 54 minutes, thus handing an innings and 76 runs victory to the hosts.

Now, former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar talked about India's batting collapse. During the post-match show on Sony Sports he said: "It was. When you have a look at what we have got at 8,9,10, and 11, we did have some rearguard action at Lord's, where England lost the plot more than anything else. Once the top three batsmen fell, it was clear we (India) were not going to survive for too long. By any stretch of the imagination, in 54 minutes for 7 wickets to fall is a little bit hard to take."

Winning captain Joe Root was overjoyed with the win and during the post-match presentation, he said: "It was a fantastic and clinical performance from the bowlers. The two big lads put loads of pressure with three maidens, and we had a really good opportunity to take wickets and we took them ruthlessly."

"We controlled and hung in with the new ball, and we reaped the rewards. Anderson churns out performances like that and that's why he's the GOAT of Test cricket," he added.

Both teams will now head into the penultimate Test match of the series and will play each other at the Oval.

Chelsea star N'Golo Kante's ankle injury worsened during a Premier League clash against Liverpool on Saturday, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel confirmed.

The 30-year-old's injury was aggravated following a challenge from Liverpool's Sadio Mane due to which he was substituted at half-time. The midfielder initially picked up the injury in the warm-up ahead of the UEFA Super Cup earlier this month and was not involved in Chelsea's Premier League season opener against Crystal Palace as a precaution.

"He is injured. He missed the Arsenal game because of pain in his ankle and some inflammation, but it was nothing serious obviously because he was back in training and he started (against Liverpool)," Tuchel said.

"In winning the ball in this situation, the opponent fell on his ankle and twisted it again. He immediately had the same pain he had before the Arsenal game and he was lacking the force to accelerate and we had to take him off.

"Can there be any harder challenges than going one man down and taking N'Golo Kante off at the same time at half-time at Anfield and having Liverpool playing towards the Kop? But we did excellently and we are super happy... we deserved the point."

Chelsea are second on the Premier League table as they take on Aston Villa in the Premier League on September 11.

Earlier, India won its first medal at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics 2020 as star player Bhavinaben Patel won the historic silver in women's table tennis (Class 4) on Sunday (August 29). She went down 0-3 to world number one Chinese paddler Ying Zhou.

The 34-year-old Patel's impressive run in her maiden Paralympic Games ended with a 7-11 5-11 6-11 loss to Zhou, a two-time gold medallist, in the women's singles summit clash which lasted 19 minutes.

Bhavina became only the second Indian female athlete to win a medal in the Paralympics after Deepa Malik, who bagged a silver in shot put F43 in 2016.

Patel had suffered a loss to Zhou in her first group stage match earlier in the week.

Up against an opponent, who has five Paralympic medals to her name including gold medals in singles at Beijing and London, Patel seemed to struggle as she couldn't execute her strategy.

Patel, who was diagnosed with polio when she was 12 months old, had defeated world no 3 Miao Zhang of China 7-11 11-7 11-4 9-11 11-8 in the semifinal showdown on Saturday.

Tokyo Paralympics: Nishad Kumar wins silver in high jump, breaks Asian record

Mohammed Shami's unbeaten half-century at Lord's gave India a "false sense of security about their tail" and they cannot have "four rabbits from 8-11", said former England captain Michael Vaughan after the visitors suffered an innings defeat in the third Test.

India were bundled out for 78 and 278 in their two innings to go down by an innings and 76 runs in the third Test at Leeds, allowing England to level the five-match series 1-1.

Vaughan feels senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's inclusion in the playing XI can solve the problem.

"Surely they have to pick Ravi Ashwin next week. You cannot have four rabbits from 8-11. The resistance at Lord's lulled them into a false sense of security about their tail. In reality, they cannot have Mohammed Shami coming in at eight," Vaughan wrote in a Facebook post.

Shami had smashed an incredible 56 not out off 70 balls in the second Test to take India to 298 for 8 declared, setting a target of 272, which the hosts failed to chase.

"Ashwin has to come in ...They got away with it at Lord's, you can't have four rabbits at 8, 9, 10 and 11. Ashwin has to play, he has got 5 Test match hundreds, he has got 400 Test wickets, he has to come into this Test team," Vaughan told BBC's Test Match Special Podcast.

"In the Indian dressing room, there is a lot of experience. The last two games, two really good venues and two venues where you can say spin has played a part historically. I would be staggered if R Ashwin is not on the team sheet on Thursday morning."

Joe Root has been simply sensational, smashing a hundred in each of the last three Tests, to inspire England to a come-from-behind win at Headingley and also in the process become the country's most successful Test captain.

"Well done to Joe Root for becoming England's most successful Test captain of all time," Vaughan wrote. Root had surpassed Vaughan with 27 Test wins as captain.

"It is not something he will care about at the moment. It is the kind of thing that does not sink in while you are still playing. You only reflect on those achievements later in life.

"When that happens he will realise his record may never be beaten because how much Test cricket will be played in the future? To captain England for 55 matches is a great effort in itself given how draining the job is, especially when he is carrying the batting to such a great extent as well."

Vaughan feels the Ashes is the only missing piece in Root's illustrious career as captain and he will be eager to achieve that next.

"Right now I am pretty sure he would swap some of those 27 victories for an Ashes series win. He wants more than anything to experience that feeling of holding up the urn because it is the only piece missing from his career," Vaughan wrote.

"Perhaps it will change in time and winning the World Test Championship will become the pinnacle for captains but at the moment for the leaders of England and Australia it is the Ashes that matters above all else."

Vaughan feels the upcoming Ashes might be his last chance to beat Australia, something which has been a yardstick of adjudging the greatness of a captain over the years.

"I realise I might cop a little bit of flak for this but Joe will not go down as a great captain until he beats Australia, probably even in his own mind, and who knows, his third crack at it this winter might be his last. Not many get four bites at the cherry," he said.

The fourth India-England Test begins on Thursday at Kennington Oval.
