Formula One should award points for qualifying if circumstances prevent a meaningful race from going ahead, as was the case in Belgium last weekend, McLaren team boss Andreas Seidl said on Friday.

Half-points were awarded at a wet Spa on Sunday after drivers completed a couple of laps behind the safety car with no overtaking, the podium places effectively a reward for Saturday`s qualifying.

The farce has led to calls for a review of the regulations that allow half-points to be awarded after two laps have been completed.

"On the points side, there is definitely something that should be learned from what happened last weekend," Seidl told reporters at Zandvoort, ahead of the first Dutch Grand Prix in 36 years.

He said race director Michael Masi had already asked teams to provide feedback.

"One idea is simply to make crystal clear and straightforward that if a race can’t happen... that you then award or distribute points based on qualifying result, maybe half points.

"I think that needs to be discussed in detail, I would be fine with that and it would also avoid this discussion that we had of `were the laps only done because of getting a classification or not`," added the German.

"From my point of view, rewarding points for a qualifying result, if the race doesn’t happen, is something I could imagine is introduced. It would be also fair because that`s the last point during a weekend where you had a fair competition between all competitors."

Seidl said that would be the same as qualifying not happening and the grid being established by final practice times, and easy for everyone to understand.

FIA President Jean Todt said after Spa that the governing body would review how points are awarded.

The findings will be on the agenda for the next F1 Commission meeting, which includes the teams and stakeholders, on Oct. 5.

Rifle shooter Avani Lekhara`s coach Chandra Shekhar, who has been training her at the JDA Range in Jagatpura since 2016, says that the 19-year-old para-athlete`s success at the Tokyo Paralympic Games is due to her "temperament", "intelligence" and "extraordinary talent", which he has seen in very few athletes.

The 19-year-old para shooter clinched her second medal in Tokyo, a bronze, in women`s 50m rifle 3P SH1 event on Friday. Avani had earlier won the gold medal in women`s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 with a world-record equalling score of 249.6.

"I can`t believe that a person, who has suffered such a terrible mishap, can come to terms with life and excel on such a big stage and be a motivation for thousands of people," Shekhar told IANS from Jaipur.

"Avani`s father was posted in the Karauli district of Rajasthan and was returning with the family on the day of Shivratri in 2012 when they met with an accident. Since then, Avani has spent life on a wheelchair," said Shekhar.

"When she was first brought to me in 2016, my first question was whether she was keen to take up shooting or was she doing it because her parents wanted her to take up the sport. Only after I got a positive feedback, I started training her and I was surprised with her keen sense of learning and intelligence. She is a master of technique now and can teach the best in the business," asserted Shekhar.

"Before she left for Tokyo for the Paralympic Games, we were certain that Avani will win two gold and one more medal of any colour. Avani has won a gold and bronze and will be next seen in action on Sunday in the mixed 50m rifle prone SH1 event. So, I suppose one more gold is due," said the coach.

The coach said that her parents too have worked really hard to ensure that their daughter gets the best training and fitness levels for her to excel at this level.

"It`s not easy to carry such heavy equipment. But her mother is a pillar of strength for her, lugging her equipment wherever she trains or competes in the world. Her father, Praveen Lekhara, has moved the family closer to the JDA Range in Jaipur so that Avani`s training doesn`t suffer. They stay barely 100m away from the range, which has made training easy for the 19-year-old," says Shekhar.

The coach said that training a para-athlete brings with it several challenges and conceded that initially he too had to learn a lot of things before he could coach Avani.

"I started with a Feinwerkbau junior model gun with a wooden stock in 2016 as Avani wouldn`t have been able to take the weight of a top competition rifle. Her father and Mr JP Nautiyal (national coach) got the modifications done to her wheelchair to make it compatible for international shooting. And within months of starting shooting she had won a gold in the 2016 Nationals.

Shekhar says it has been a journey of learning not just for Avani, but for her family and him as well as the para shooter continues to make a huge statement in Tokyo. He adds that Avani`s exploits will not end with the Tokyo success. "She is too committed and too motivated and will keep coming back to win more medals at the showpiece event."

Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur on Friday expressed hope that the javelin will become as popular in India as the cricket bat. He was interacting with four Paralympic Games medallists, including F64 winner Sumit Antil, at a felicitation ceremony.

Thakur was referring to the four javelin throw medals won by Indians in the Paralympic Games in the wake of Neeraj Chopra`s historic gold medal in the Olympic Games.

"I hope javelin in India will now become as famous as a cricket bat," he said while felicitating the four athletes who returned this morning after winning medals in the Paralympic Games.

The athletes who the Sports Minister felicitated in his office apart from Sumit were Devendra Jhajharia (Javelin Throw F46 Silver Medal), Yogesh Kathuniya (Discus Throw F56 Silver Medal) and Sharad Kumar (High Jump T63 Bronze medal).

"On National Sports Day, India clinched four medals and there can`t be a better tribute than this to Major Dhyan Chand ji. There is a lot of hard work by the athletes combined with the support given by the Government to the National Sports Federation and athletes. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji`s encouragement has been a driving force," Thakur said.

"Government will improve the sports ecosystem in the country and through schemes like TOPS, it will keep supporting the athletes (both core and development) in an unprecedented way," he said.

Minister of State, Youth Affairs and Sports, Nisith Pramanik and Ministry officials were also present. Devendra Jhajharia and Sharad Kumar spoke of the support provided by the Government in their Paralympic Games campaign.

"In the last four years, the Government has supported us in a great way. PM Modi Ji`s interaction with us also boosted our morale and we felt motivated this time," Jhajharia said.

"This was a very difficult Paralympics because we did not know whether Games will happen or not. We are very happy that Government adopted us and offered us great support through Target Olympic Podium Scheme. The Government is working tirelessly to support us and all our sports-centric and reasonable requests are being approved quickly," Sharad Kumar said.

"The Prime Minister`s call to every athlete after their respective events is also unprecedented and many of our international contemporary competitors are in awe of such a gesture", Sharad added.

Serbian ace Novak Djokovic on Friday said that he isn't a "spoiled brat" after he complained after a fan heckling during his second-round match against Tallon Griekspoor of the US Open.

The World No. 1 eased past Griekspoor (6-2 6-3 6-2) to progress into the third round. However, the Dutch was not the biggest challenge for Djokovic in the second round, it was actually a fan who kept yelling and shouting during crucial moments of the match.

Djokovic eventually spoke to the umpire about the fan and his disturbance.

He said: “When tennis players talk about that, someone who is watching team sports would say, ‘What a spoiled brat’.

“But it’s a different sport. Look, there’s a lot of noise happening on the stadium, particularly in the night sessions. I don’t mind that.

“Even sometimes during the point it happens that people out of excitement, they just scream or they release like a sound or whatever, sigh, whatever you call it. And that’s fine.

“But if someone intentionally does it over and over again, then I have tolerance up to a certain point, then it’s not correct, then it’s not fine. It’s not fair. I feel like it’s not good for us players.”

“I mean, particularly that guy for some reason was calling, raising the sound and kind of screaming just before I would hit my smash, which was a big point. Before that he would do a few times. After that again.

“That wasn’t nice. That’s all. I don’t mind the noise. Don’t get me wrong. I think it’s important for the entertainment, for the crowds, the music.

“I get it. But if someone does it over and over again, particularly when you are at his side, he knows why he’s doing it. The guy that I pointed out, he knew exactly what he was doing, and that’s all.”

Novak Djokovic will now face Kei Nishikori in the next round of the US Open. He will be looking to beat Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to become the 21-time Grand Slam champion.

India vs England 2021, 4th Test, Live Streaming: When and where to watch IND vs ENG?

India skipper Virat Kohli on Thursday became the fastest batsman in the history of the game to register 23,000 international runs.

Kohli achieved the feat in the opening session of the opening day of the fourth Test against England here at the Oval on Thursday. The Indian skipper took just 490 innings to register the feat while Sachin Tendulkar had taken 522 innings to achieve the same milestone. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting had taken 544 innings to score 23,000 international runs.

Kohli has been going through a lean patch of late as he has not registered a single ton in international cricket for 51 innings. He last scored a century way back in 2019 against Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Coming back to the ongoing match, India lost the wickets of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara as England dominated the opening session of the fourth Test at the Kennington Oval.

At lunch, India`s score read 54/3 with Kohli (18*) and Ravindra Jadeja (2*) unbeaten at the crease. In the first session, 25 overs were bowled and the English bowlers made sure they repaid the faith shown by skipper Joe Root as he won the toss and decided to bowl.

Sent into bat, the Indian openers -- Rohit and Rahul -- mixed caution with aggression and the duo saw out the opening spells of James Anderson and Ollie Robinson. However, the introduction of Chris Woakes paid off straight away as he dismissed Rohit (11), ending the 28-run opening stand.

Pujara next joined Rahul in the middle and the duo found the going tough and they did not score a single run for almost five overs, and this eventually brought about a wicket, as Rahul (17) was trapped in front by Ollie Robinson, reducing India to 28/2.

Pujara (4) also failed to leave a mark with the bat as he chased a wide delivery and his wicket was grabbed by James Anderson, reducing India to 39/3 in the 20th over. In the end, Kohli and Jadeja ensured that India went into the lunch break without losing any further wicket.

Despite Shardul Thakur's last-minute heroics, the Men in Blue were bundled out for 191 runs.

The wrong foot technique was the reason behind the dismissal of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara. Now, former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar was disappointed by the performance.

"You see the length that is being bowled and see where the batsmen are playing. They are so far committed to the front foot, it's very difficult for them to drop their bats. They just tend to sort of go for it. If you're on the backfoot just that little bit, you have that nano second to drop your wrists and let the ball go," Gavaskar said on The Sony Sports Network.

"You may look like an idiot but you'd still be batting. Whether you look like an idiot or look great, doesn't go down in the scorebooks. It's the number of runs you score. When you follow the ball like Pujara has been doing - he is committed to the front foot - you get yourself into trouble," Gavaskar pointed out.

England won the toss and chose to bowl. Chris Woakes and Ollie Robinson scalped 7 wickets and dismantled India's batting attack.

Experience trumped youth as former champion Sloane Stephens` deadly forehand sealed fellow American Coco Gauff`s fate 6-4 6-2 in the second round of the U.S. Open on Wednesday.

The pair appeared evenly matched early on but the 17-year-old Gauff handed Stephens a critical break with a double fault on the last point in the ninth game and never regained the momentum from her 28-year-old opponent.

In the second set, Gauff failed to convert the only break point opportunity she had against the 2017 champion, who had eight forehand winners across the one hour and six minute meeting on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

"The forehand was key today," Stephens said "I wanted to come out here and really execute and play my game."

Stephens won the last seven points in a row, as she dominated from the baseline and had a two break advantage headed into the final game.

Stephens got 84% of her first serves in across the match. Gauff committed four double faults.

"Serving that high percentage for me is always really key just because I can get into the points and I can start off aggressive with me dictating play, which is what I want to do," said Stephens.

The off-court friends hugged at the net after the match and Stephens heaped praise on the 23rd-ranked Gauff, a fan favourite at Flushing Meadows who reached the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros earlier this year, the best major performance of her career.

"I love Coco, I think everyone knows I love Coco," said Stephens. "I`ve seen her game really transition and change ... I know there`s going to be great things ahead for her."

In the third round she faces either Anhelina Kalinina or 2016 champion Angelique Kerber, whose second-round match was postponed on Wednesday due to inclement weather.

Severe weather in New York saw dozens of matches postponed at the U.S. Open on Wednesday while the singles tie between Diego Schwartzman and Kevin Anderson was halted after a set and moved to a different venue as rain soaked the court and fans.

Schwartzman and Anderson traded early breaks in the first set before play was halted for over 30 minutes at Louis Armstrong Stadium as the venue`s retractable roof was unable to prevent rain being blown in sideways by strong winds.

Schwartzman then slipped during a tiebreak in the first set and called for chair umpire Nacho Forcadell, who inspected the court as fans donned plastic ponchos and held up umbrellas.

The court was wiped down with towels and play resumed after nearly 10 minutes, but officials then suspended the match and later announced it would resume at Arthur Ashe Stadium following the tie between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Adrian Mannarino.

"You guys call me when you`re ready to play tennis," said South African Anderson, the runner up in 2017, before leaving the court.

The second round match between former champion Angelique Kerber and Anhelina Kalinina, originally scheduled to begin after Schwartzman and Anderson, was pushed to Thursday.

The match between Tsitsipas and Mannarino was unaffected by the weather, with fans sitting comfortably inside the far more enclosed facility though rain drummed heavily on the roof.

Earlier in the day, more than two dozen doubles matches were postponed as the rain rolled in.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency advisory for the region, and parts of the plaza at Billie Jean King National Tennis Center were flooded.

Severe weather disrupts US Open schedule

World number three Stefanos Tsitsipas fired down a career-high 27 aces on the way to a 6-3 6-4 6-7(4) 6-0 win over second-round opponent Adrian Mannarino on Wednesday, but another protracted bathroom break drew jeers from the U.S. Open crowd.

Greek Tsitsipas won all of his first-serve points in the opening set and fired off 53 winners in the match to Mannarino`s 26 and looked set for a straightforward win at Arthur Ashe Stadium before the Frenchman won a third-set tiebreak.

Tsitsipas then retreated to the locker room for a bathroom break of more than seven minutes, leaving Mannarino to ask for some balls to be brought out so that he could stay loose ahead of the fourth set.

Tsitsipas, who infuriated Andy Murray in the last round by taking a seven minute-plus break, was met with a chorus of boos from spectators when he returned and even as he served to start the set.

The jeers had little impact on his performance, however, as he powered through the final six games to set up a third-round tie against Spanish teenager Carlos Alvaraz.

Tsitsipas said after the match that he was completely soaked with sweat after the third set and that important for him "to feel refreshed".

The Roland-Garros runner-up said he did not realize he had exceeded his previous career high of 22 aces in a match.

"I just felt very loose on my serve. My ball toss was very consistent," said Tsitsipas. "I didn`t really think about it, that it was that many."
