<p>A grand jury in the US on Tuesday indicted a former Apple employee, charging him with theft and attempted theft of trade secrets and then fleeing to China.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The accused has been identified as 35-year-old Weibao Wang who was hired by Apple in March 2016 to work as a software engineer. According to the indictment, in 2017, Weibao accepted a job from a Chinese company working to develop self-driving cars before resigning from Apple. However, he waited four months before informing the tech giant of his new job.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Afterwards, Apple discovered that Weibao had accessed large amounts of secret and proprietary data, days before his departure. Consequently, the federal authorities were informed who raided his home in June 2018 and found “large quantities” of data from Apple.</p>

<p>Fearing that authorities were tightening the noose, he purchased a ticket from San Francisco International Airport to Guangzhou, China -&nbsp;informed the justice department.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Weibao continues to remain on the run as authorities attempt to deport him back to the US. He&nbsp;faces a maximum statutory sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine in the amount of $250,000 (or twice the gross gain or loss resulting from the scheme) for each count of theft or attempted theft of trade secrets. &nbsp;</p>

<p>“We stand vigilant in enforcing US laws to stop the flow of sensitive technologies to our foreign adversaries. We are committed to doing all we can to prevent these advanced tools from falling into the hands of foreign adversaries," he told reporters.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Other indicted industrial spies&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Notably, apart from Weibao, the US prosecutors also charged Liming Li, Nikolaos Bogonikolos, Russian nationals Oleg Sergeyevich Patsulya and Vasilii Sergeyevich Besedin as well as Xiangjiang Qiao for myriad charges of industrial espionage.</p>

<p>India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday schooled the European Union and its foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell after the latter called for action against&nbsp;Indian selling refined products made from Russian crude oil.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Urging&nbsp;Borrell to look inwards, Jaishankar said,&nbsp;"Look at EU Council regulations, Russian crude is substantially transformed in the third country and not treated as Russian anymore. I would urge you to look at Council's Regulation 833/2014."</p>

<p>Earlier,&nbsp;Borrell, in an interview with the Financial Times egged Brussels to crack down on India reselling Russian oil into Europe as refined fuel, including diesel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If diesel or gasoline is entering Europe ... coming from India and being produced with Russian oil, that is certainly a circumvention of sanctions and member states have to take measures," the EU's chief diplomat said.</p>

<p>"That India buys Russian oil, it's normal... But if they use that in order to be a centre where Russian oil is being refined and by-products are being sold to us...  we have to act," Borrell said.</p>

<h2><strong>India's clear approach to serving its own interests</strong></h2>

<p>This is not the first instance when Jaishankar has stood up to the bully tactics of the West. Last year, the EU and other Western nations caused a row by calling out India repeatedly for buying Russian oil at discounted prices.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, Jaishankar&nbsp;took a rather strong approach and shut them by remarking, "Buying Russian gas is not funding the war."</p>

<p>"Why it's only Indian money and fund coming from India and not gas coming to Europe which funds war, let's be even-handed out," said Jaishankar at the Globsec 2022 Bratislava forum.</p>

<p>"Why countries in Europe and West and the United States, why don`t they allow Iranian oil in the market why don't they allow Venezuela oil to come to the market? They have squeezed every other source of oil we have and then say you will not go to the market and get the best deal for the people, it's not a fair approach," he added.&nbsp;</p>

I don't think people should read more into it other than the legitimate expectations of any trading country to increase its trade," said the EAM.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report also targetted India's Union Home Minister Amit Shah, claiming that the BJP leader in a public meeting in Hyderabad,&nbsp;promised to end employment and educational quotas for religious minorities in Telangana if his party was voted to power.&nbsp;</p>

'Motivated and biased': India slams US report on religious freedom

<p><meta name="uuid" content="uuid34WA0EV7Xak2" /><meta charset="utf-8" />The embassies of Kuwait and Jordan were reportedly attacked in Sudan over Monday and Tuesday, as the fighting between the Sudanese Army and Paramilitary forces continued a month after the start of the tensions.</p>

<p>On Tuesday, Kuwait's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed regret over the raid of the residence of the Kuwaiti embassy's military office and the Jordanian embassy's military office in Khartoum.</p>

<p>“Kuwait condemns the attack on the residence of the head of the military office and [condemns] all forms of violence and sabotage,” the ministry said in a statement.</p>

<p>“The attack is a flagrant violation of international law and the Vienna Convention [on Diplomatic Relations],” it said.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia, which has been mediating talks between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Jeddah also condemned the attack and said it was closely monitoring the incidents.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Saudi foreign ministry released a statement saying it regretted the attacks and called upon all parties involved to resort to calm and adhere to the outcomes achieved in Jeddah.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The RSF reiterates its unwavering commitment to the protection and security of all diplomatic missions, residences, and personnel, as well as to assisting with the safe evacuation of foreign nationals," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What is happening in Sudan?</strong></h2>

<p>The violent civil war between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary forces that started last month has led to the death of more than 750 while thousands have been injured.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted a three-month extension to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI)&nbsp;to complete its investigation into allegations of 'brazen' stock price manipulation by the Adani Group.</p>

<p>The apex court has granted the market regulator time till August 14 to submit its final report. In the meantime, the bench ordered SEBI to file an updated status report of the investigation as well as make its report submitted to&nbsp;Justice A M Sapre committee available to related parties.&nbsp;</p>

<p>SEBI, the Indian securities regulator, had&nbsp;moved the SC last month&nbsp; demanding a six-month extension to probe the case. The regulator argued&nbsp;that the complexity of the case meant it would take 15 months to complete the investigation. According to SEBI, there are as many as eight possible violations that require&nbsp;more time to complete the probe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Pass an order extending the time to conclude the investigation as directed by this Court by the common order dated March 2 by a period of 6 months or such other period as this court may deem fit and necessary in the facts and circumstances of the present case," read the plea filed by SEBI.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The had court earlier this week refused to provide a six-month extension, saying there needed to be 'alacrity in work' of the body.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We cannot grant 6 months now. There needs to be some alacrity in the work. Put together a team. We can list the case in August mid and have the report then.. 6 months cannot be given as a minimum time. SEBI cannot take indefinitely long period and we will give them 3 months," the court said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While most countries across the globe have entered a slow recession, the Indian economy is expected to grow by 6.7 per cent in the calendar year 2024, emerging as one of the few bright spots, a new UN report has revealed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The World Economic Situation and Prospects&nbsp;as of mid-2023&nbsp;report released on Tuesday said India's economy is expected to expand by 5.8 per cent in 2023 and 6.7 per cent in 2024.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It, however, added that&nbsp;higher interest rates and weaker external demand will continue to weigh on investment and exports in 2023.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report noted that while most central banks in the region hiked interest rates in early 2023 to tackle inflation and stabilise exchange rates, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) applied the brakes after six consecutive hikes, accounting for a cumulative&nbsp;increase of 250 basis points since May last year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We have kept the policy rate unchanged, this decision was taken based on our assessment of the macroeconomic and financial conditions with reference to information available," said RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das at the time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The growth projection for India is in line with the estimate made in&nbsp;World Economic Situation and Prospects 2023 report launched earlier this year.&nbsp;The January report said&nbsp;India's GDP is projected to grow to 5.8 per cent in 2023.&nbsp;</p>

The report noted that while most central banks in the region hiked interest rates in early 2023 to tackle inflation and stabilise exchange rates, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) applied the brakes after six consecutive hikes, accounting for a cumulative increase of 250 basis points since May last year. "We have kept the policy rate unchanged, this decision was taken based on our assessment of the macroeconomic and financial conditions with reference to information available," said RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das at the time. <p>"High base effect and falling commodity prices will lend downward pressure on WPI inflation this year," Madan Sabnavis, an economist at Bank of Baroda was quoted as saying by Reuters. He added that low commodity prices will also bring down the prices of manufactured goods.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A lower WPI inflation rate could help in pulling retail inflation down with its lagged impact making a significant dent on the core CPI inflation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The retail inflation in the country eased to 4.7 per cent in April which was an 18-month low, as against 5.7 per cent recorded in the month of March.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was in July 2020 that WPI last recorded deflation at&nbsp;t (-) 0.25 per cent while the previous low was recorded in June 2020 at&nbsp;&nbsp;(-) 1.81 per cent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We don’t know yet whether the election will be over in the first round, but if people take us to a second round, we will respect that too," Erdogan told his supporters, adding that his ruling conservative alliance had won a “majority" in parliament.</p>

<p>While Erdogan took a conservative position, his opponent Kemal Kilicdaroglu rattled the cage once again and said the president had not received the result he was expecting.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Despite all his smear campaigns and insults, Erdogan did not get the result he expected. Nobody should get excited about a fait accompli," said Kilicdaroglu.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Elections are not won on the balcony (referring to Erdogan's speech). Election data still continues to come. If our nation decides on a runoff, with our pleasure. We will definitely win this election in the second round. Everyone will see it."</p>

<p>Sinan Ogan, the third presidential candidate who has allied with Erdogan, took to Twitter late on Sunday to cast aspersions over the overseas vote-counting process.</p>

<p>"We have heard that some manipulations were carried out in the overseas vote counting processes. Vote counting is not done in a healthy environment. I warn the YSK. Take the necessary measures immediately and ensure that the vote counting processes are carried out quickly," Ogan tweeted.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, a high number of migrants continue to remain in US custody, despite the numbers falling 'significantly' since last week. Currently, the administration is facing a lawsuit which could curtail its ability to release migrants.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to reports more than 45,000 may remain in custody by the end of the month if powers to release migrants from custody when facilities are over capacity are curtailed.&nbsp;</p>

The laborious exercise is expected to be a two-year effort which seeks to showcase the gory reality of the camp where Adolf Hitler and his Nazi troops eviscerated millions, including children, mercilessly, from 1940 to 1945.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the site of the camp now stands a museum and the&nbsp;modern conservation laboratory where the shoes are being conserved. According to an AP report, more than&nbsp;100,000 shoes of victims remain, some 80,000 of them in massive heaps on display in a room where visitors file by daily. Some are warped while some have their original colours fading, and shoe laces disintegrated. However, conserving them is a grim reminder of the lives brutally cut short by the megalomania of one man.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Children’s shoes are the most moving object for me because there is no greater tragedy than the tragedy of children,” said Mirosław Maciaszczyk, a conservation specialist from the museum’s conservation laboratories.</p>

<p>“A shoe is an object closely related to a person, to a child. It is a trace, sometimes it’s the only trace left of the child.”</p>

<p>Currently, the museum is able to conserve 100 shoes a week and since the start of the exercise, 400 shoes have been processed. The experts are not attempting to restore the shoes to their original state, albeit,&nbsp;render them as close to how they were found at war’s end as possible. The project is expected to cost nearly $500,000 and is funded&nbsp;by the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>The horrors of concentration camps</strong></h2>

<p>From mid-1942 the Nazis systematically deported Jews from all over Europe to six camps -- Auschwitz-Birkenau, Belzec, Chelmno, Majdanek, Sobibor and Treblinka. While Nazis were able to destroy evidence of their barbarity from most camps, they could not do so at Auschwitz.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In December 1942, Poland's then London-based government-in-exile forwarded a document, titled "The Mass Extermination of Jews in German Occupied Poland", to the Allies.</p>

<p>The document included detailed accounts of the unfolding Holocaust as witnessed by members of the Polish resistance, but drew disbelief and only muted reactions from the international community.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Before the Nazis sent people to the gas chambers on the compound, they were told to undress and leave everything, including their shoes outside. They were sent into the gas chamber on the pretext of being taken to the shower to be disinfected.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the world only learned about the horrors of the Auschwitz camp after the Soviet Red Army forcefully entered the camp on January 27, 1945.&nbsp;David Dushman, one of the last soldiers who liberated the camp and died in 2021 revealed that once he mowed down the electric fence using his T-34 Soviet tank, all he could see was 'skeletons' lying everywhere.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"They staggered out of the barracks, sat and lay among the dead. Terrible. We threw them all our canned food and immediately went on to hunt down the fascists," he said.</p>
