Chief cabinet secretary Hirokazu Matsuno and industry minister Yasutoshi Nishimura were among those who announced their resignations on Thursday after Kishida said he was finalising his third cabinet shake-up in 16 months.

Four ministers - all hailing from the biggest and most powerful faction within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) that is being investigated by prosecutors - and several deputy ministers are set to be replaced.

Ex-foreign minister Yoshimasa Hayashi confirmed he had been tapped to replace Matsuno in the critical post responsible for coordinating policy across government on the premier's behalf.

<h2>'Further disruption'</h2>

Some political observers have compared the affair to the so-called Recruit scandal in the late 1980s when allegations of insider trading led then prime minister Noboru Takeshita and several other top government officials to resign.

Since news of the latest scandal broke a few weeks ago, Kishida has seen his public support drop to around 23%, the lowest since he came into office in October 2021, recent polls have showed.

Support for the LDP has also fallen below 30% for the first time since 2012, when it returned to power after a blip in its near total post-war dominance of Japanese politics, according to an NHK poll this week.

Research published in British journal Nature Communications gives new insight into how wildfire smoke can harm firefighters and first responders, and why wildfire smoke is more hazardous than other forms of air pollution.&nbsp;

In a statement, study lead Alandra Lopez, a postdoctoral scholar at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability said: "Our study suggests far more attention should be paid to wildfire-modified chromium, and we presume additional metals as well, to more thoroughly characterise the overall threats wildfires pose to human health."

Scientists identified a high level of hexavalent chromium or chromium 6. It is popularly known as the 'Erin Brockovich' chemical.

<h2>Wildfire smoke, an overlooked hazard</h2>

As per a report on the Stanford University website, wildfires are known to carry dangerous air pollutants including gases, organic aerosols, and fine particulate matter, which can trigger asthma attacks, heart attacks, and early death.

However, not much attention has been paid to the potential harm from metals found in soils. Across the western United States, Australia, Brazil, Europe, Indonesia, and South Africa, Chromium is one such common chemical.

Wildfires can turn the benign chromium into its carcinogenic counterpart, chromium-6.&nbsp;

Researchers caution that as climate change and global warming heat up the earth, triggering more and more wildfires, health risks posed by airborne chromium need to be better understood.

"In the complex mixture of gasses and particles that wildfires spew out as smoke and leave behind as dust, heavy metals such as chromium have largely been overlooked," said senior study author Scott Fendorf, the Terry Huffington Professor in the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability.

<h2>What is the 'Erin Brockovich' chemical?</h2>

The so-called 'Erin Brockovich' chemical was made popular by the 2000 film Erin Brockovich.

In nature, chromium mostly occurs in a form known as trivalent chromium or chromium 3. This is an essential nutrient used by our bodies to break down glucose.

However, its counterpart, hexavalent chromium or chromium 6, is often a result of industrial processes. This is known as the 'Erin Brockovich' chemical and is known to increase cancer risk when inhaled or ingested via contaminated drinking water. In 2019, researchers at Australia’s Southern Cross University found that chromium 6 can form rapidly when surface soils containing chromium 3 are heated by wildfires.

Elon Musk commits $100mn to establish his own university, says report

Turkey's opposition lawmaker Hasan Bitmez died on Thursday (Dec 14), two days after he collapsed and suffered a heart attack in front of parliament after finishing his speech in which he criticised the policy of the government towards Israel.

54-year-old Bitmez, a member of parliament&nbsp;from the opposition Felicity (Saadet) Party, breathed his last in Ankara City Hospital, said Health Minister Fahrettin Koca, while speaking to reporters in televised remarks.

Bitmez had graduated from Cairo's Al Azhar University and was the chairman of the Centre for Islamic Union Research. Previously, he had worked for Islamic non-governmental organisations, as per his parliament biography. MP Bitmez was married and had a child.

In the official broadcast of the Parliament, Bitmez was seen collapsing to the floor after continuously standing at the podium, while facing the general assembly on Tuesday (Dec 12).

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has said that the government's plans to curb legal migration will trigger a recruitment crisis in the British capital.

High levels of legal migration have particularly ruled the political landscape of Britain for over ten years and have been a significant factor in the 2016 vote for Brexit.

Last week, Britain announced plans to slash the number of migrants that were arriving via legal routes and raise the minimum salary they must earn in a skilled job by a third&nbsp;amid pressure on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to tackle record net migration figures.

Home Secretary (interior minister) James Cleverly said the new measures could reduce that number by 300,000.

Cleverly said that the government would raise the minimum salary threshold for foreign skilled workers to 38,700 pounds ($48,900), from its current level of 26,200 pounds, though health and social workers would be exempt.

Describing the policies as misguided, Khan said that the failure to train the domestic workforce will make it difficult for London businesses to function without the required staff.

“One of the reasons that London is the greatest city in the world is the contribution of successive generations of immigrants working side by side with trained Brits. Migrants are absolutely integral to our economy and public services, whether running our care homes and our bars and restaurants or helping power our world-leading arts and creative sector," the Guardian quoted Khan as saying.

Cleverly said the government would put an end to the current system that lets employers pay migrants only 80 per cent&nbsp;of the going rate to do jobs where there is a significant worker shortage.

The Dutch government issued a warning to people to ask their pets and children to stop swallowing foam at the seaside after a study revealed that “forever chemicals” were present in concentrated amounts in the spume. 
 
After research was conducted into foam collected at the Belgian seaside, it showed a concentration of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) – which are widely used for their waterproofing qualities but are difficult to destroy. 
 
The coast in Zeeland and north and south Holland in April and August was measured by the Dutch public health institute RIVM. 
 
It was also discovered that the sea foam present at popular Dutch resorts, which include Egmond, Katwijk, Scheveningen, Texel and Zandvoort, had comparable levels of PFAS to Belgium.

PFAS synthetic chemicals have been related to the toxic effects on the human immune system, risks for wildlife, certain types of cancers and fertility issues. 
 
In a parliamentary briefing on Tuesday (Dec 12), Minister of Water Management Mark Harber said, “It is sensible to have a shower after swimming, wash your hands before eating, and not to let children and pets swallow any sea foam.” 
 
“The RIVM has previously established that people in the Netherlands are already too exposed to PFAS. A large amount comes from food and drinking water. Every route through which people ingest more PFAS is undesirable, including via sea foam,” he added.
