The United States added 1.6 million people, more than two-thirds of which came from international migration, bringing the nation's population total to 334.9 million, the report said.

According to William Frey, a demographer at The Brookings Institution, the US population was projected to decline in absence of the immigration.

"The immigration piece is going to be the main source of growth in the future," Frey said.

Malaysia “also decided to no longer accept ships using the Israeli flag to dock in the country” and ban “any ship on its way to Israel from loading cargo in Malaysian ports”.

“Both of these restrictions are effective immediately,” the prime minister said.

The Muslim-majority Southeast Asian nation doesn’t maintain a diplomatic relationship with Israel.

The bill which is said to be a compromise reached between Macron’s party and the conservative opposition passed the lower house without the ruling party needing the support of the far-right. Nonetheless, its backing has caused embarrassment in the presidential camp.

However, since the bill has passed, none of those threats have immediately materialised.&nbsp;

The initial proposal by the Macron government would have made it simpler for migrants working in sectors that lack labour to get a residency permit, while also making it easier for them to expel illegal migrants.&nbsp;

However, in a bid to gain support from the conservatives, they agreed to water down some of the residency permit measures. The new bill which was passed would also delay migrants’ access to welfare benefits, including those for children and housing allowances by at least several years.&nbsp;

The new bill also introduces a range of restrictions including migration quotas, making it more difficult for children of immigrants to become French citizens while saying that dual nationals who have been convicted for serious crimes against the police could lose French citizenship.

France passes controversial bill to toughen immigration rules despite Macron party rebellion

The Indian Navy has evacuated an injured sailor from a hijacked vessel that appeared to be based out of Malta. The personnel from Malta-flagged vessel was rescued off the coast of Somalia, Press Trust of India reported.

The sailor is a Bulgarian national. He was reportedly one of the&nbsp;18 crew members onboard the cargo ship and was injured in firing by the pirates.

The Bulgarian national&nbsp;was evacuated by frontline ship INS Kochi and was further transported for being provided&nbsp;urgent medical assistance.

"The Indian Navy rendered assistance in evacuation of an injured crew member from the hijacked vessel MV Ruen in the early hours of Monday," PTI quoted an official as saying.

Indian Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal told the Press Trust of India that the country's&nbsp;naval forces remain committed to render assistance to the mariners at sea.

The Article 98 of the UNCLOS specifies duty of the signatories to 'render assistance'.&nbsp;

"Every State shall require the mast&nbsp;of a ship flying its flag, in so far as he can do so without serious danger to the ship, the crew or the passengers," it says.

Under Article 98 (1) (c), the signatories are committed to "proceed with all possible speed to the rescue of persons in distress, if informed of their need of assistance."

As per CNN, recently, conservators used X-ray to peer below the paint and varnish of Rembrandt's "The Night Watch". This was the first evaluation of the painting to combine X-rays, spectroscopy of a paint sample and 3D digital reconstructions, in its almost 400-year history.&nbsp;

It revealed something really unexpected: lead.

They found that under the paint there was a whole layer of lead, and this finding has been detailed in journal Science Advances.

The Russian leader also stressed that the business ties between the two nations were booming, with bilateral trade turnover already reaching $200 billion ahead of schedule.

The death toll after a 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit a remote and mountainous county in northwest China has risen to 131 as Chinese rescuers braving sub-zero conditions in the region continued to find and treat survivors, on Wednesday (Dec 20).

In Gansu,&nbsp;more than 207,000 homes were damaged and nearly 15,000 houses collapsed affecting around&nbsp;145,000 people.&nbsp;

The area within 50 kilometres of the epicentre in the neighbouring Qinghai province, including 22 towns and villages have been affected due to the earthquake.&nbsp;

However, two villages have sustained the most damage, reported Reuters. In the neighbouring provinces’s Minhe county around 20 people were missing after a mudslide swept through half-burying many buildings in brown silt.

Thousands of emergency responders deployed in the region after the earthquake raced against time to look for survivors and resettle them.&nbsp;

Chinese media citing researchers said that people trapped under rubble exposed to minus 10 degrees Celsius conditions could suffer from hypothermia and could only stay alive for between five and 10 hours if uninjured.&nbsp;

A&nbsp;21-year-old&nbsp;survivor named&nbsp;Du Haiyi in&nbsp;Qinghai's quake-hit Haidong told Reuters that&nbsp;his family home had been completely levelled but he&nbsp;managed to save his mother and 16-year-old sister, who were trapped under debris the night of the quake.&nbsp;

"My parents were pulled out from underneath this, but I don't know how," said Du, adding that they "ran to wherever we could."

The earthquake in Gansu prompted frightened residents out of their homes and onto the streets in the cold. Groups of survivors reportedly spent a freezing Tuesday night huddled around outdoor fires.

China’s weather office, early Wednesday, said subzero temperatures smashed records at five stations which include provinces and regions of Shanxi, Hebei and Inner Mongolia.&nbsp;

The temperature in Shanxi’s city of Datong dropped to minus 33.2 degrees Celsius and minus 27 degrees Celsius in the nearby county of Yangqu.

“Notably, the records for all-time low temperatures (in those areas) had already been broken on December 17,” the Chinese national weather office said in a post on social media.&nbsp;

The temperatures also plunged to record lows in Qingshuihe, Inner Mongolia (minus 29.7 degrees Celsius); Baoding, Hebei (minus 23.3 degrees Celsius); and Shunping, Hebei (minus 22 degrees Celsius).&nbsp;

Freezing temperatures were not the only concern of the rescue workers as Reuters citing Gansu Provincial Seismological Bureau, strong aftershocks of magnitude five were still possible around the area in the coming days.&nbsp;
