In a leaked recording from a meeting with hostage families that aired on Israel's Channel 12 news on Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Qatar "problematic."

"You haven't seen me thank Qatar, have you noticed? I haven't thanked Qatar. Why? Because Qatar, to me, is no different in essence from the U.N., from the Red Cross and in a way it's even more problematic. However, I'm willing to use any mediator now who can help me bring them (the hostages) home."

Asked to comment on Qatar's statement and whether the leaked recording was authentic, an Israeli government spokesperson said Israel "cannot go into details regarding the efforts and steps taken to release the hostages."

In response Al Ansari's statement, Israel's far-right finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, accused Doha of "supporting and funding terrorism."

In November, Qatar helped secure a seven-day pause in fighting, during which 110 Israeli and foreign hostages were released from Gaza in return for 240 Palestinians released from Israeli captivity.

According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Shinji Aoba, now aged 45, set the KyoAni studio in Kyoto on fire in July 2019. Aoba himself suffered heavy burns and underwent intensive treatment for nearly a year. He was arrested near the arson site and faced five charges, including murder and arson. This incident had sent shockwaves not just in Japan, but across the world given the studio's far-reaching fan base. Here's a timeline of what happened: > On the morning of July 18, 2019, Aoba broke into the building of KyoAni studio, spread gasoline around the ground floor, lit it and shouted "Drop dead," the news agency AFP reported citing the arson's survivors. Thirty-six people were killed and 32 others were injured in the incident. Many of the victims were young people, including a 21-year-old woman. A Japanese man who admitted to starting a fire at the popular Kyoto Animation studio in 2019 that killed 36,&nbsp;has been sentenced to death by the court, local media reported.&nbsp;

The man identified as Shinji Aoba, 45,&nbsp;reportedly broke into the studio, sprayed petrol around the ground floor and alighted it before shouting "Drop dead".&nbsp;

The Kyoto District Court found Aoba guilty of setting the three-story building on fire and&nbsp;ruled that he was "neither insane nor suffering diminished mental capacity at the time of the crime".&nbsp;

Despite admitting to starting the fire in the trial that started in September last year, Aoba's attorneys entered a&nbsp;not-guilty plea. His team&nbsp;argued that even if he was to be convicted, he should be given a reduced sentence on account of his "state of diminished capacity", adding that he was delusional at the time of the attack.

Notably, Aoba&nbsp;claimed the anime studio had stolen his ideas after rejecting his novels at an annual award contest the studio hosts. However, to this date, there is absolutely no evidence that the studio plagiarised his work.&nbsp;

<h2>Death penalty in Japan</h2>

Among developed nations, Japan is the minority that hands out capital punishment to criminals, usually involved in murder cases with more than one victim.

As of December last year, at least 107 people were on death row. In 2018, the country executed 13 people, including the leader of a doomsday cult, responsible for the 1995 sarin attacks on Tokyo's subway.&nbsp;

Notably, Aoba nearly died in the attack as well, suffering severe burns on 90 per cent of his body, including on the face, torso and limbs.

Consequently, he remained unconscious for weeks and was treated for 10 months at a hospital&nbsp;specialising in burns where he underwent several skin transplant operations, according to Japanese media reports.&nbsp;

As for the beloved studio, also known as KyoAni, famous for producing graphic novels and films with high production value, justice may have been finally served.&nbsp;

Later, a US-based animation company managed to raise $2.4 million via crowdfunding for the studio to help it get back on its feet.&nbsp;

The man identified as Shinji Aoba, 45, reportedly broke into the studio, sprayed petrol around the ground floor and alighted it before shouting "Drop dead". The Kyoto District Court found Aoba guilty of setting the three-story building on fire and ruled that he was "neither insane nor suffering diminished mental capacity at the time of the crime". Despite admitting to starting the fire in the trial that started in September last year, Aoba's attorneys entered a not-guilty plea. His team argued that even if he was to be convicted, he should be given a reduced sentence on account of his "state of diminished capacity", adding that he was delusional at the time of the attack. Notably, Aoba claimed the anime studio had stolen his ideas after rejecting his novels at an annual award contest the studio hosts. However, to this date, there is absolutely no evidence that the studio plagiarised his work. As of December last year, at least 107 people were on death row. Consequently, he remained unconscious for weeks and was treated for 10 months at a hospital specialising in burns where he underwent several skin transplant operations, according to Japanese media reports. As for the beloved studio, also known as KyoAni, famous for producing graphic novels and films with high production value, justice may have been finally served. Smith, currently holed up at the&nbsp;Holman Correctional Facility, survived the state's attempt to put him to death by lethal injection&nbsp;nearly 14 months ago. However, the apex court denied Smith's request to stay the second execution attempt, scheduled for Thursday (Jan 25).&nbsp;

Apart from refusing to halt the proceedings, the court also declined to hear his legal challenge contending that the second execution attempt&nbsp;violated the US Constitution's Eighth Amendment protections against cruel and unusual punishment.&nbsp;

Last week, in an interview, Smith claimed he had severe trauma due to the botched execution attempt.&nbsp;

“I dream that they’re coming to get me. They haven’t given me a chance to heal. I’m still suffering from the first execution and now we’re doing this again. They won’t let me even have post-traumatic stress disorder – you know, this is ongoing stress disorder,” Smith told The Guardian.

“I am not ready for that [execution]. Not in no kind of way. I’m just not ready, brother,” he added.&nbsp;

Smith's attorneys&nbsp;have argued that in 2020, the American Veterinary Medical Association in its euthanasia guidelines cleared nitrogen hypoxia only for pigs. For other mammals, it said, nitrogen hypoxia could create an "anoxic environment that is distressing for some species".&nbsp;

Smith will be taken to an execution chamber on Thursday where he will be strapped to the gurney. According to court documents, the state will place a mask on him to deliver nitrogen.&nbsp;

The "Type-C full facepiece respirator-type face mask" will cut off Smith's oxygen supply and replace it with nitrogen. This will cause him to die due to lack of oxygen. Notably, the gas will be delivered for at least 15 minutes or "five minutes following a flatline indication on the Electrocardiogram (EKG)".

Andrei Kartapolov, who is a retired general and a lawmaker in&nbsp;Russia's parliament, also claimed during a parliamentary session that the plane had been shot down by three missiles. He did not provide any details or evidence to support his claims.&nbsp;

<h2>What do we know about the aircraft?&nbsp;</h2>

The Il-76 is a military transport aircraft designed to airlift troops, cargo, military equipment and weapons. It has a normal crew of five people, and can carry up to 90 passengers.&nbsp;

Telegram messenger app Baza, a channel said to be linked to Russian security services, posted a video, which showed a large aircraft falling towards the ground and exploding in a vast fireball.&nbsp;

A heartbreaking story of a boy has shocked the small French town of Nersac in the Charente region where a mother left her nine-year-old son to live alone while she was staying with her partner in another apartment few kilometres away. The woman, last week, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for abandoning her child.&nbsp;

<h2>House without electricity or heating</h2>

The boy, who was not identified, was left to live alone in the family’s apartment from 2020 to 2022 while his mother lived five kilometres away with her partner and would only visit her son every now and then, according to media reports.&nbsp;

The 6th grader at the time would see his mother occasionally when she came to give him food sometimes. Media reports citing French police said that the nine-year-old most of the time fed himself with canned goods, cakes, and tomatoes stolen from the nearby balcony.

According to the local media Charente Libre, the boy sometimes lived without electricity and hot water in an unheated apartment. He would reportedly wrap himself in several blankets to face the harsh winter months.&nbsp;

<h2>How did no one notice?</h2>

The French media reported that his teachers did not find anything unusual with the boy since he came to school every day, with a smile and was described as a good student.&nbsp;

“He was smiling, a good student, always clean, polite... No sign indicated that he was abandoned,” Mayor of Nersac, Barbara Couturier, was quoted as saying by Italian newspaper Il Messaggero.

While some of his classmates began to doubt how he was living, the boy told him that he ate by himself, took the bus to school alone and didn’t go out otherwise, a classmate told TF1.&nbsp;

It was actually the boy’s neighbours, who would sometimes help by giving him food, who eventually told the mayor who then called the police.

Couturier, according to BFMTV, said, “I met his mom on May 2022. She came to tell us that she had financial problems, and we gave her four vouchers for food, but she took some processed food products instead so that got me suspicious.”&nbsp;

She added, “Some residents told me that there was a child living alone, so I connected the two things and I called the local police and the national police.”&nbsp;

<h2>Mother sentenced to 18 months in prison</h2>

The mother reportedly identified as Alexandra, 39, pleaded not guilty and denied all the allegations laid out by authorities before the court.&nbsp;

During the hearing, she insisted that her son was going to Sireuil – where she lived with her partner – by bus while she followed him on a scooter, but the judges found that hard to believe.&nbsp;

Alexandra also claimed that her son was living with her. However, the French police, upon investigation found she spent her nights in Sireuil and did not take her son to school and none of her neighbours in Sireuil had even seen the boy.

Her lawyer eventually conceded by saying that she is in “denial”. Alexandra was convicted of “abandonment of a minor” and faces 18 months in prison out of which she will spend six months under surveillance with an electronic bracelet.&nbsp;

The woman, last week, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for abandoning her child. House without electricity or heating The boy, who was not identified, was left to live alone in the family’s apartment from 2020 to 2022 while his mother lived five kilometres away with her partner and would only visit her son every now and then, according to media reports. The 6th grader at the time would see his mother occasionally when she came to give him food sometimes. Media reports citing French police said that the nine-year-old most of the time fed himself with canned goods, cakes, and tomatoes stolen from the nearby balcony. He would reportedly wrap himself in several blankets to face the harsh winter months. How did no one notice? The French media reported that his teachers did not find anything unusual with the boy since he came to school every day, with a smile and was described as a good student. “He was smiling, a good student, always clean, polite... No sign indicated that he was abandoned,” Mayor of Nersac, Barbara Couturier, was quoted as saying by Italian newspaper Il Messaggero. While some of his classmates began to doubt how he was living, the boy told him that he ate by himself, took the bus to school alone and didn’t go out otherwise, a classmate told TF1. It was actually the boy’s neighbours, who would sometimes help by giving him food, who eventually told the mayor who then called the police. Couturier, according to BFMTV, said, “I met his mom on May 2022. She came to tell us that she had financial problems, and we gave her four vouchers for food, but she took some processed food products instead so that got me suspicious.” She added, “Some residents told me that there was a child living alone, so I connected the two things and I called the local police and the national police.” Mother sentenced to 18 months in prison The mother reportedly identified as Alexandra, 39, pleaded not guilty and denied all the allegations laid out by authorities before the court. Alexandra also claimed that her son was living with her. However, the French police, upon investigation found she spent her nights in Sireuil and did not take her son to school and none of her neighbours in Sireuil had even seen the boy. Her lawyer eventually conceded by saying that she is in “denial”. Alexandra was convicted of “abandonment of a minor” and faces 18 months in prison out of which she will spend six months under surveillance with an electronic bracelet. "The departure of USS Gunston Hall marks the first tactical movement of Steadfast Defender 24. His Majesty’s Canadian Ship Charlottetown, will depart Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada for Europe later this month," the statement said. Around 90,000 troops from member states are participating in the exercise that will run through May. A rapid deployment of forces NATO said on Wednesday that Steadfast Defender 24 would highlight the intergovernmental military organisation's ability to deploy forces rapidly from North America and other parts of the alliance to reinforce the defence of Europe. A top document by NATO had identified Russia as the most significant and direct threat to the alliance's security. 'Irrevocable return of NATO to Cold War schemes' Last Sunday (Jan 21), Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said that Steadfast Defender 24 marked an irrevocable return of the alliance to Cold War schemes.
