The United States Department of Defence (DoD) has recently allocated a contract worth 68.4 million US dollars to an American company for the construction of 50 advanced air-to-ground missiles slated for delivery to Taiwan over the next four years, as reported by Central News Agency Taiwan which cited information from the Department of Defence (DoD).

These missiles, an integral component of an arms sale package sanctioned by Washington in June 2017, are intended for deployment on Taiwan's fleet of F-16V fighter jets to bolster their long-range strike capabilities, according to a release on the website dated Feb. 2.

According to CNA Taiwan, as part of the 68.4 million USD contract under the aegis of the DoD, a division of the American aerospace and defence conglomerate RTX Corp. will manufacture the 50 Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) Air-to-Ground Missiles for distribution to Taiwan's government within a four-year timeline, according to the announcement.

The bulk of the production will be centred in Tucson, Arizona, where Raytheon Missiles &amp; Defence (RMD) operates, with an anticipated completion date of March 2028, the statement added.

The Air-to-Ground Missile (AGM-154) weighs 1,000 pounds and serves as a precision strike weapon capable of carrying various lethal payloads. It has been integrated into several US-manufactured fighter jets, including Taiwan's F-16 fleet, as per Focus Taiwan

With a standoff range spanning from 12 to 63 nautical miles, the missile can be launched from beyond the range of enemy point defences while effectively engaging and neutralising targets.

Mackenzie and the 29 others pleaded not guilty to the charges which include 191 counts of murder, including of three infants, reported AFP citing court documents. One suspect was found mentally unfit to stand trial.&nbsp;

In December, Mackenzie was convicted and sentenced to 12 months in jail for producing and distributing films without a licence.&nbsp;

Mackenzie forbade cult members from sending their children to school and going to the hospital when they were ill, calling such institutions Satanic, reported Reuters citing some of his followers.&nbsp;

The eight people sentenced, including business executive Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit and member of parliament Piyabutr Saengkanokkul, all plan to appeal the verdict, their lawyer said.

Pita could be disqualified from parliament if his appeal fails and courts uphold the verdict. Thai law does not allow people convicted of serious crimes to hold parliamentary seats.

“I never thought about it from that perspective,” Biden said. “What would we say if that happened in another democracy around the world?”

The discussion between the two leaders was said to be about the January 6 attack on the US Capitol when thousands of supporters of the former president and Republican frontrunner Donald Trump reportedly tried to stop lawmakers from certifying Biden’s win in the 2020 presidential elections.&nbsp;

A pod of orcas, or killer whales, appeared to be trapped in drift ice off the coast of Hokkaido in northern Japan on Tuesday (Feb 6), causing concerns among authorities and environmentalists.&nbsp;

NHK, which is a Japanese public broadcaster, aired footage on Tuesday (Feb 6), which showed at least 10 orcas. The killer whales were seen poking out of a small gap in the surface. The drone footage was provided by the group Wildlife Pro.&nbsp;

They were spotted struggling in the water that is about 1 km off the coast of Rausu on the Shiretoko peninsula, which is a Unesco world heritage site famed for its abundant wildlife.&nbsp;

The killer whales were seen clustered together and appeared to be sticking their heads out of the water to breathe. The largest cetaceans can spend extended periods of time underwater, although killer whales typically stay submerged for only a few minutes.&nbsp;

As per a report in the Japanese Yomiuri newspaper, the drift ice had been moving southward and reached the coast of Rausu on Tuesday morning.&nbsp;

The Yomiuri said that in 2005, nine killer whales died after getting trapped in drift ice off Rausu.&nbsp;

Reports of non-fatal shark bites came in from Costa Rica, Colombia, Brazil, New Seychelles, Turks and Caicos, Ecuador, South Africa, and the US.

According to researchers at the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File, the study focused on bites which have occurred without human provocation and provides valuable insights into shark behaviour.

"This is within the range of the normal number of bites, though the fatalities are a bit unnerving this year," he said.

Three of the fatal attacks in 2023 happened off South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula, known for its high population of white sharks and seals, their main prey.

According to Naylor, seals’ agility means only those behaving erratically are caught, similar to surfers. A bull shark also claimed the life of a teenage girl in Western Australia’s Swan River.

Despite these incidents, the number of fatal attacks in Australian waters in 2023 remained below the decade’s peak in 2020.

Researchers noted that most attacks were "test bites," where sharks mistake people for prey. While sharks usually swim away after such incidents, unusual cases involving repeated or particularly harsh bites have proven fatal. In conclusion, the shark attack file noted that the "risk of being bitten by a shark remains extremely low."&nbsp;

Police Chief John Pelletier announced at a press conference on Monday that law enforcement agencies nationwide will receive copies of the after-action report to aid in their disaster preparedness. He defended its thoroughness, saying that it would not be finalised for up to a year to allow for the incorporation of proposals, and that it had been evaluated by two outside agencies.

Pelletier described the extensive efforts made to find the remains of three people who are still listed as missing in the wildfire.

“We created strategies of where they might have escaped to and then we sent anthropological teams to go to those estimated escape routes and then we got excavators to go through the rubble,” he said. “Any lead that is given to us, we will pursue, and the search is not over.”

The wildfire was driven by high winds from a hurricane passing far to the south and spread quickly through dry, invasive grasses.

Many videos from body cameras showed police going to great lengths to try to help. One officer sprinted from house to house, alerting people to the approaching inferno. Forty-two victims were found inside structures, 15 were found in cars, 39 were outdoors, and one person was found in the ocean, according to the report.&nbsp;

More than 50 victims were identified by collecting DNA from biological relatives, Sgt. Chase Bell told the news conference, but one person who was reported missing had no biological relative to provide a DNA sample.&nbsp;

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.&nbsp;
