According to the report at least 370,000 housing units in Gaza have been damaged, including 79,000 destroyed completely. The rate of housing after the previous Israel-Hamas conflicts was 992 units per year.&nbsp;

The report noted that even if Israel allows a five-fold increase of construction material to enter the blockaded Palestinian enclave, it would take until 2040 to rebuild destroyed houses, without fixing the damaged ones.

The UNDP estimates the cost of reconstruction of Gaza to surpass $30 billion and could reach up to $40 billion, said UN Assistant Secretary-General Abdallah al-Dardari, as per AFP.&nbsp;

“The scale of the destruction is huge and unprecedented...this is a mission that the global community has not dealt with since World War II,” he added.&nbsp;

According to the UNDP report, the Israeli offensive has virtually shut down the economy in Gaza which around 81 per cent in the last quarter of 2023. The “productive basis of the economy has been destroyed,” with sectors experiencing losses of more than 90 per cent, the report noted.&nbsp;

If the war were to continue for nine months, according to the UNDP projections, the poverty is estimated to more than double with over&nbsp;1.86 million being pushed into poverty.

In 2024, the Palestinian economy – which includes both Gaza and the West Bank – contracted nearly 26 per cent and if the war continues until July, that number would reach 29 per cent with the estimated losses of $7.6 billion, according to the report.&nbsp;

“Unprecedented levels of human losses, capital destruction, and the steep rise in poverty in such a short period of time will precipitate a serious development crisis that jeopardizes the future of generations to come,” said Steiner.&nbsp;

Gaza, which is home to around 2.3 million people, has been blockaded by Israel and Egypt since Hamas’ 2007 takeover with strict control on what enters and exits the territory.&nbsp;

If the student fails to meet these requirements, he/she might have to leave the country. The student can only start working in Canada once their study programme has started. The no confidence motion was defeated by 70 votes to 58.

With that outcome averted, Yousaf will remain in office until the SNP chooses a new leader. Former SNP party leader John Swinney and Yousaf's old leadership rival Kate Forbes have both said they are considering running.

"This is a global problem that young people are being influenced by those who are professionals at radicalising our children," Mayor Eric Adams said.

"We're proud to say they have been removed from the campus. While those who broke into the building did include students, they were led by people who were not affiliated with the university," Adams added.

"With the utmost regret, we request the NYPD's help to clear all individuals from Hamilton Hall and all campus encampments," the letter added.

Columbia University President Dr Minouche Shafik also issued a fresh statement Wednesday morning following the police raid.

"I know I speak for many members of our community in saying that this turn of events has filled me with deep sadness. I am sorry we reached this point," Shafik's statement said.

She stated that she contacted the NYPD because her primary concern was her safety.

"But students and outside activists breaking Hamilton Hall doors, mistreating our Public Safety officers and maintenance staff, and damaging property are acts of destruction, not political speech," Shafik added.

The arrests by the NYPD followed the occupation of Hamilton Hall on Tuesday (Apr 30) by Columbia University student protesters, who renamed it "Hind Hall" in remembrance of Hind Rajab, a six-year-old casualty in Gaza.

If the bill were to become law, it would codify a definition of antisemitism created by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) in Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The Civil Rights Act bars discrimination based on shared ancestry, ethnic characteristics or national origin.

In the latest development, Ukrainian officials said that five people were killed on Wednesday (May 1) during a Russian attack on the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions.&nbsp;

The region's governor said that a guided bomb attack killed two people in the northeastern Kharkiv region bordering Russia. The eastern region has been under near-constant bombardment from Russian artillery. Notably, large parts have been occupied by Russian forces for months.&nbsp;

Kharkiv regional governor Oleg Synegubov said on national television on Wednesday morning that "two guided aerial bombs hit the centre of the town of Zolochiv," around 15 kilometres from the Russian border.&nbsp;

He wrote on Telegram, "We know of two dead and six injured civilians including an 11-year-old boy." Synegubov said that a man and a woman were killed in one car.&nbsp;

Vadym Filashkin, the head of the region's military administration, said that in the eastern Donetsk region, two people were killed and six injured in the small town of Girnyk, about 15 kilometres from the front line.&nbsp;

"The Russians attacked the town with Uragans this afternoon," Filashkin wrote on Telegram, referring to rocket launchers. Those killed were a 57-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man, he added.&nbsp;
