<h2>Hundreds arrested</h2>

Police in the last 24 hours have arrested hundreds of protesters of whom majority&nbsp;have called for divestment from companies that support Israel and the war in Gaza.

Announcements broadcast on the University of California Los Angeles campus on Wednesday (May 1) told demonstrators to disperse or they would be arrested.

California's governor's office criticised the slow response of law enforcement to a violent incident at UCLA. The incident involved a clash between a pro-Israeli group and a pro-Palestinian student encampment.

A masked pro-Israeli group assaulted a pro-Palestinian student camp before the police officers were called to the campus.

Governor Gavin Newsom's spokesperson said the limited and delayed police intervention was unacceptable.

The Arizona Senate on Wednesday (May 1) cleared the way for the repeal of the archaic six-week abortion ban that&nbsp;holds no exceptions for rape or incest.

After being passed in the Arizona Senate with&nbsp;an absolute majority of&nbsp;16–14 votes, the bid to overturn the stringent abortion ban that allows no exception&nbsp;is expected to be quickly signed by Governor Katie Hobbs, a Democrat.

The nearly 160-year-old&nbsp;law holds no exceptions for rape or incest. It places a blanket ban and criminalises the medical procedure of abortion throughout pregnancy. The only exception is if the pregnancy puts the mother's life at risk.

The ban could take effect within 60 days of the top state court ruling unless the legislature intervenes, reports Reuters.

Meanwhile, in the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat, the scorching heat caused railway tracks to buckle. With temperatures reaching 41 degrees Celsius (105 Fahrenheit), railway workers had to douse the rails with water to bend them back into shape.

The State Railway of Thailand attributed the track warping to the "extreme heat" experienced between Ron Phibun and Khao Chum Thong on April 30. Hour-long dousing with water and ice made the&nbsp;tracks&nbsp;usable again.

Deputy state railway governor Jaray Rungthani who spoke to&nbsp;AFP stressed on&nbsp;the need for vigilance as temperatures remained high. He assured that railway station managers would assist passengers and handle the heatwave situation based on forecasts.

Dean, 45, a former Spirit AeroSystems employee had accused the company of ignoring the defects in the production of the 737 MAX, a plane series by Boeing whose reputation has been marred by a series of crashes and incidents.&nbsp;

The former Spirit employee had alleged that he was fired for flagging lax standards at the company’s manufacturing plant in Wichita, Kansas. His aunts and sister on social media said that he died on Tuesday (Apr 30) after a sudden illness.&nbsp;

Dean’s death comes less than two months after a former Boeing employee turned whistleblower&nbsp;was found dead after an apparent “self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Boeing has come under intense scrutiny after a string of incidents, including a near-catastrophic mid-air panel blowout on a 737 MAX plane operated by Alaska Airlines in January.&nbsp;

A report by The Seattle Times citing Dean’s aunt, Carol Parsons on Wednesday (May 1) said that Joshua went to the hospital after he had trouble breathing some two weeks ago.&nbsp;

Eventually, his condition began to worsen, Parsons told the media outlet, adding that her nephew was intubated. Dean’s mother took to Facebook and wrote that her son was “fighting for his life” after contracting pneumonia and suffering a stroke following an MRSA infection, reported Al Jazeera.&nbsp;

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a serious bacterial infection and is “difficult to treat because of resistance to some antibiotics,” according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).&nbsp;

The Seattle Times, which first reported on the whistleblower’s death, on Wednesday (May 1) said Dean had “been in good health” and was known “for having a healthy lifestyle,” but died after contracting a “sudden, fast-spreading infection.”

<h2>‘Excessive amount of defects’</h2>

As an employee at Spirit, Dean had flagged lax standards and an “excessive amount of defects” at a Boeing manufacturing plant in Wichita back in October 2022, according to NPR.&nbsp;

Dean had testified against Spirit in a shareholder lawsuit last year. In January, the former Spirit employee, in an interview with the The Wall Street Journal said that he was fired for pointing out wrongly drilled holes in fuselages.

“It is known at Spirit that if you make too much noise and cause too much trouble, you will be moved…doesn’t mean you completely disregard stuff, but they don’t want you to find everything and write it up,” he told the WSJ.&nbsp;

He had also filed a complaint against the company with the US regulatory body the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for “serious and gross misconduct by senior quality management of the 737 production line” at the manufacturer, reported Newsweek.&nbsp;

Spirit AeroSystems, in a short statement to the media, said that the company’s thoughts were with his family.&nbsp;

“This sudden loss is stunning news here at Spirit and for his loved ones,” a spokesperson told Al Jazeera.

Dean’s lawyer Brian Knowles told the media outlet that his client’s death was a “loss to the aviation community and the flying public”.

He added, “He possessed tremendous courage to stand up for what he felt was true and right and raised quality and safety issues.”&nbsp;

“Aviation companies should encourage and incentivise those that do raise these concerns. Otherwise, safety and quality are truly not these companies’ top priorities,” Knowles told Al Jazeera.&nbsp;

At the same time, Eagles upheld other North Carolina restrictions, including a requirement that patients have an in-person consultation before taking the pill and undergo an ultrasound and blood test, saying those requirements had never been explicitly rejected by the FDA.

The Republican leaders of North Carolina's legislature intervened in the case to defend the restrictions after Attorney General Josh Stein, a Democrat who supports abortion rights, said he would not do so. They did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

"Republican legislators enacted the law to control, not protect, women," Stein said in a statement. "I'll keep fighting to protect women's freedoms."

Plaintiff Amy Bryant, the doctor who brought the lawsuit challenging the North Carolina law, said in a statement that she was "pleased" that the court found the state cannot "second-guess or interfere with the FDA's expert judgment."

Mifepristone is the first part of a two-drug medicine used for medication abortion, which is approved by the FDA to terminate pregnancy in the first 10 weeks. Medication abortion accounted for more than 60 per cent of U.S. abortions last year.

The case now before the Supreme Court began with a lawsuit challenging the FDA's approval of the drug by anti-abortion groups, who last year won an order from U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in Amarillo, Texas, banning mifepristone altogether.

The ministry in coordination with the NCEMA, also decided to close all roads leading to areas prone to flash floods, water accumulations, and dams during the weather conditions.&nbsp;

The recent downpour comes less than a month after the Gulf country was brought to a standstill after torrential rains brought severe flooding which disrupted air traffic in Dubai and trapped residents in traffic, in their offices and homes.&nbsp;

On April 14 and 15, heavy rains battered the Arabian Peninsula, with Dubai experiencing the heaviest rains on record since 1949. &nbsp;
