Mexicans voted Sunday in a presidential election dominated by two women, a historic first in a country with a history of gender-based violence and discrimination.

Thousands of troops were expected to be deployed to protect voters, following a particularly bloody electoral process that has seen more than two dozen aspiring local politicians murdered.

Ruling party candidate Claudia Sheinbaum, a former Mexico City mayor and a scientist by training, had a 17 percentage point lead over her main opposition rival Xochitl Galvez on the eve of the vote.

The only man running, centrist Jorge Alvarez Maynez, was trailing far behind.

It means that barring a huge surprise, a woman is almost certain to break the highest political glass ceiling in Mexico, where around 10 women or girls are murdered every day.

"A female president will be a transformation for this country, and we hope that she does more for women," said Clemencia Hernandez, a 55-year-old cleaner in Mexico City.

"Many women are subjugated by their partners. They're not allowed to leave home to work," she said.

Mariana Nieves, a 28-year-old designer, said a lot of younger Mexicans were fed up with politicians.

"But we have to vote because we're hopeful of something good for Mexico in security, education. I'm happy that a woman is going to win but I'm not very excited because I think neither of them has coherent proposals on improving women's rights," she said.

Nearly 100 million people were registered to vote in the world's most populous Spanish-speaking country, home to 129 million people.

Sheinbaum, 61, owes much of her popularity to outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a fellow leftist and mentor who has an approval rating of more than 60 per cent but is only allowed to serve one term.

In a nation where politics, crime, and corruption are closely entangled, ultra-violent drug cartels have gone to extreme lengths to ensure that their preferred candidates win.

Hours before polls opened, a local candidate was murdered in a violent western state, authorities said, joining at least 25 other political hopefuls killed this election season, according to official figures.

Israel Delgado, 35, was shot on Saturday night near his home, the Michoacan state prosecutor's office said.

In another sign of the difficulties of staging elections in cartel hotspots, voting was suspended in two southern municipalities because of violence, local authorities said Saturday.

"The fight against organized crime will be the biggest challenge for the next president," said Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera, a professor at George Mason University, in the United States.

Security was the weakest point of Lopez Obrador's administration, she told AFP.

Sheinbaum has pledged to continue the outgoing president's controversial "hugs not bullets" strategy of tackling crime at its roots.&nbsp;

More than 450,000 people have been murdered and tens of thousands have gone missing since the government deployed the army to fight drug trafficking in 2006.

The next president will also have to manage delicate relations with the neighbouring United States, in particular the vexed issues of cross-border drug smuggling and migration.

Addressing a cheering crowd of thousands at her closing campaign rally, Sheinbaum said Mexico was going to "make history" this weekend.

"I say to the young women, to all the women of Mexico -- colleagues, friends, sisters, daughters, mothers and grandmothers -- you are not alone," she said.

The ruling party candidate had the backing of 53 per cent of voters as campaigning drew to a close, according to a poll average compiled by research firm Oraculus.

Galvez, an outspoken senator and businesswoman with Indigenous roots, was second with 36 per cent. Maynez, 38, had just 11 per cent.

Galvez, 61, often evokes her childhood story of growing up in a poor, rural town in central Mexico where she says she sold candy to help her family.

Nearly 50 per cent of Independent voters in the upcoming United States presidential election said they want former president and presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump to drop out of the race for the White House after he was found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in his criminal hush money case, according to a new poll, on Saturday (Jun 1).&nbsp;

<h2>What did the new poll find?</h2>

The poll, which was conducted by the Morning Consult, on Friday (May 31) gave one of the first reaction of American voters after Trump was found guilty by a jury in New York on all 34 charges stemming from $130,000 in hush money paid to the adult film actress, Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election.&nbsp;

On Thursday (May 30), Trump became the first former US president to be convicted of a crime, and with just nearly five months to go for the upcoming elections, voters, according to the polls, are not reacting well to the unprecedented situation.&nbsp;

The polls show that 54 per cent of registered voters “strongly” or “somewhat” approve of the guilty verdict, while 34 per cent “strongly” or “somewhat” disapproved of it.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, 49 per cent of Independents, 15 per cent of Republicans, and eight per cent of self-proclaimed supporters of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee believe that Trump should end his presidential campaign, according to the poll.&nbsp;

The report also shows that the race between Trump and his successor Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has now effectively tied nationally. According to the poll, Biden had 45 per cent support, compared to Trump’s 44 per cent after the verdict.&nbsp;

The Morning Consult also asked voters what should happen to the former president now that he has been convicted, to which 49 per cent said that he should be sentenced to probation, while 44 per cent said he should be given a prison sentence.&nbsp;

Around 68 per cent, according to the poll, said that he should be fined.&nbsp;

Ten per cent of Republican registered voters said they are less likely to vote for Trump after his guilty verdict, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll that also closed on Friday.

Images and videos on social media show the art museum in the New York City borough of Brooklyn being stormed by hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters which led to its closure an hour early.&nbsp;

Since the beginning of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza, the United States has witnessed massive, often violent, protests.&nbsp;

During the protest, a banner that read “Free Palestine. Divest From Genocide” was also unfurled from the roof. The protesters also clashed with the officers from the New York Police Department (NYPD) inside and outside the building.

The rally began on Friday afternoon across the street at Barclays Center after which protesters, chanting and banging drums, as per the Associated Press made their way to the museum which is around 1.6 kilometres away.&nbsp;

NYPD officers were seen tackling and punching protesters during the scuffles while demonstrators reportedly hurled plastic bottles at officers and shouted insults.

On Saturday, the NYPD said it detained 29 people during the protest out of which, six&nbsp;were arrested and charged with offenses including assault and criminal trespassing.&nbsp;

Additionally,&nbsp;16 people were released with orders to appear in court and around&nbsp;seven others were issued summonses and released, said an NYPD spokesperson in an email to Reuters.&nbsp;

Guards at the museum were also seen trying to secure its doors against the surging crowd while protesters found other ways to enter the museum.&nbsp;

“Out of a concern for the building, our collections, and our staff, the decision was made to close the building an hour early,” said the museum officials, adding that the public was asked to vacate peacefully.&nbsp;

Students at Columbia University, on Friday night, set up a new encampment on campus ahead of the school’s alumni weekend to show support for Palestinians in Gaza.&nbsp;

“We’re back bitches,” declared one sign put up by the protesters as seen in a video by the New York Times.&nbsp;

A report by Reuters citing a video on social media said campus security was seen taking down the tents but as of Friday night, police were not involved.&nbsp;

“We are aware of the encampment erected this evening and are monitoring the situation. We remain committed to hosting a successful weekend for our alumni,” said Columbia spokesperson Samantha Slater.&nbsp;
