Three houses collapsed but there were no reports of deaths or injuries, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said after the shallow quake struck the Noto Peninsula at 6:31 am (2131 GMT Sunday).

Public broadcaster NHK showed footage of at least one home thrown askew with badly damaged walls and the tiled roof of part of the building having crashed to the ground.

No abnormalities were detected at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa or Shika nuclear plants in the region on the Sea of&nbsp;Japan&nbsp;coast,&nbsp;Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority said.

"The area has been seismically active for more than three years, including the magnitude 7.6 earthquake on January 1 this year. That is expected to continue for the foreseeable future, so please continue to exercise caution," the JMA said.

On New Year's Day, at least 260 people died after a massive earthquake hit the peninsula, including 30 "quake-linked" deaths as well as those killed directly in the disaster.

The January 1 quake and its aftershocks toppled buildings, caused fires and knocked out infrastructure at a time when families were celebrating the new year.

The JMA said Monday's quake was related to the January one, with a similar epicentre and seismic mechanism.

Sitting on top of four major tectonic plates along the western edge of the Pacific "Ring of Fire",&nbsp;Japan&nbsp;is one of the world's most tectonically active countries.

In the footage, the trio identified as Patrizia Cormos (20), her friend Bianca Doros (23), and her boyfriend Cristian Molnar (25) were seen holding on to each other just seconds before they were swept away by the flash flood.&nbsp;

The three friends were standing on a tiny pebble island when the river level suddenly began to rise reportedly after days of heavy rains in the region.&nbsp;

The bodies of Cormos and her friend Doros were found on Sunday (Jun 2) between 700 metres and one kilometre downstream of where they disappeared.&nbsp;

The rescue team that found the bodies described the scene as “heartbreaking”. They also found a handbag containing the mobile phone which made the emergency call. Rescuers on Monday continued the search for Molnar.&nbsp;

<h2>What we know about the incident</h2>

The three friends had reportedly decided to take a walk along the river last Friday (May 31) and ventured out onto a tiny gravel island when the level of the river suddenly began to rise and the trio got stuck.&nbsp;

The chief of the firefighters threw them a rope to pull themselves out of the river, but unfortunately, they were unable to do so.&nbsp;

“We threw them a rope, but they were literally swallowed up by the flood waters in front of our eyes. We watched them disappear,” said Giorgio Basile, fire service chief in the nearby city of Udine.

“Stay together, gather together, hug each other,” one firefighter had shouted at the group from a nearby bridge.

The 20-year-old was a student and the 23-year-old was from Romania who had recently arrived in Italy to visit her parents. The 25-year-old was Doros’ boyfriend, also from Romania.&nbsp;

The mayor of Premariacco suggested that the trio could have saved themselves had they waded back to the riverbank immediately.&nbsp;

“The water had surrounded them, but it was still low. Maybe they decided not to move so as not to get their clothes and shoes wet. Unfortunately, the river was then flowing at tremendous speed,” said Mayor Michele De Sabata.&nbsp;

The mayor, speaking to the Corriere della Sera newspaper, also revealed that a fire service rescuer was just “seven metres away from them, but he was unable to do anything.”&nbsp;

He also acknowledged that it was sunny and the trio could not have predicted what was about to happen. De Sabata said that a rescue helicopter was also dispatched but arrived “a minute after the kids disappeared.”&nbsp;

The Maldives on Sunday (June 2) declared it would amend a law to effectively ban the entry of Israeli nationals into the South Asian nation.

The country's Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan said that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu took the decision in a cabinet meeting to ban Israel's passport in the country.

This comes as Muizzu has appointed a special envoy to identify Palestine's requests from the Maldives regarding the ongoing war in Gaza.

The archipelago nation also said it was setting up a fundraising campaign to help Palestinian citizens with the help of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.

"President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, following a recommendation from the Cabinet, has resolved to impose a ban on Israeli passports. The Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihsaan, announced the decision at a news conference held at the President's Office this afternoon," a statement by the Maldives President's office read.

As per sources, the government process to make necessary amendments to the law has started.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked the Israeli citizens who are currently in the Maldives to try leaving the country after the annoucement.&nbsp;

“I will become the first woman president of Mexico,”&nbsp;Sheinbaum said in her victory speech shortly after the&nbsp;electoral authorities announced her&nbsp;irreversible lead.

"I want to thank millions of Mexican women and men who decided to vote for us on this historic day," the president-elect&nbsp;told the&nbsp;crowd as flag-waving supporters sang and danced to mariachi music in Mexico City's main square celebrating the ruling party candidate's victory, according to AFP.&nbsp;

Galvez,&nbsp;who has been highly critical of&nbsp;Sheinbaum and her political mentor&nbsp;Obrador, said she would continue to “defend democracy”.&nbsp;

The head of the ruling Morena party Mario Delgado told supporters in Mexico City that&nbsp;Sheinbaum had won by a “very large” margin, even before the results were announced.&nbsp;

The ruling party has also declared its candidate the winner of the Mexico City mayorship race, while the opposition disputed that and claims its own nominee won the contest. The mayorship race for the capital is also among the country’s most important ones.&nbsp;

Mexico City is one of the nine states choosing its governor on Sunday.&nbsp;Prior to the election, Morena controlled the governorships in 23 of Mexico’s 32 states.&nbsp;

According to the police, Nitheesha Kandula - who is a California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) student - has been missing since May 28.&nbsp;

In a post shared on X on Sunday (June 2), CSUSB Chief of Police John Guttierez said that she was last spotted in Los Angeles and she was reported to be missing on May 30.

According to the media reports, Kandhula was 5 feet 6 inches tall and nearly 160 pounds (72.5 kgs) in weight, said the police in a written statement. It added that she has black hair and black eyes.

It is most likely that the girl was driving a 2021 Toyota Corolla which had a California license plate, the colour of which is not known, as per the statement.

Appealing to people with information regarding her whereabouts to contact authorities, the police said, "Anyone with information is urged to contact the CSUSB Police Department at (909) 538-7777, or the LAPD's Southwest Division at (213) 485-2582."&nbsp;

Additionally, Israel's foreign ministry advised its citizens not to visit the Maldives. “In light of the Maldives government’s decision to ban the entry of citizens with Israeli passports, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends that Israeli citizens avoid any travel to the Maldives,” the Foreign Ministry's statement said.

“The recommendation is also valid for Israeli citizens holding a foreign passport, in addition to the Israeli passport. For Israeli citizens staying in the country, it is recommended to consider leaving, since if they fall into distress for any reason, it will be difficult for us to help,” the Foreign Ministry added in the&nbsp;statement.
