In the United States Boston area, a fifth-grade teacher has been placed on paid leave for holding a "mock slave auction" of two children of colour. The teacher also used a racial slur during a lesson, according to the local school superintendent, Gregory L. Martineau.

Martineau, who oversees the Public Schools of Northborough and Southborough, in a letter to parents shared details of the incidents and offered an apology.&nbsp;

The teacher in question has not been identified. However, as per NBC News, the teacher works at Margaret A. Neary Elementary School in Southborough, Massachusetts. As per reports, the teacher conducted a mock slave auction in January as part of a history lesson on the Southern colonies' economy.

During the so-called mock auction, the teacher singled out two children of colour, and pointed out their distinguishing&nbsp;attributes, such as their teeth and strength.

Condemning the conduct,&nbsp;Martineau acknowledged&nbsp;that it could be potentially traumatising for Black students. In April, the same teacher used the N-word while reading from a book not included in the curriculum, even though the word was not in the text.

Martineau said he learned about both incidents on April 24 and held a meeting with the teacher and the school's principal to address the situation and inform families. However, the next day, the teacher identified one of the students who had complained and "called out" the student, singling them, an action Martineau deemed "not acceptable."

As a result, the teacher was placed on leave and is undergoing "due process procedures" that will determine their future with the district. Additionally, the school's principal was placed on 10 days of paid leave in May, said superintendent Martineau.

"I apologise for the events that took place in The Public Schools of Southborough," said Martineau, adding, "I acknowledge that there were missteps in this process that further complicated the situation. Ultimately, I am responsible for ensuring students are in safe and supportive learning environments."

Rahsaan Hall, president of the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts, suggested the incidents could serve as a learning opportunity for the district to develop better practices and engage the community on sensitive topics.

To prevent such incidents in the future, the district is developing a plan to implement "cultural competency" training for teachers by the fall.&nbsp;

A tragic wish of death by assisted suicide of a young&nbsp;Dutch woman was finally fulfilled at the age of 29 last week.

The doctors terminated the life of 29-year-old Dutch woman Zoraya ter Beek last week after the court gave final approval to her request for euthanasia, which she had filed three years ago.

In the Netherlands, euthanasia is legal if the patient is deemed to&nbsp;be experiencing “unbearable suffering with no prospect of improvement.”

The doctors diagnosed Ter Beek with autism when she was 21 and by the time she turned 22, the girl started wearing a “Do Not Resuscitate” tag around her neck,&nbsp;as reported by The Free Press.&nbsp;

According to the reports, the girl had been hoping to end her life since she was a child because she&nbsp;faced bullying while she was growing up and she often felt as if she did not fit in.

“For me, autism is the major hiccup in my life,” said Ter Beek, while speaking to the Free Press. “That bothers me the most," she added.

Although the woman was physically healthy, she was struggling with mental illness like anxiety, depression and an unspecified personality disorder, reported The Free Press.

The girl used to dress like a goth to ward off bullies in school and appeared scarier. &nbsp;“The whole black look looked right, because that is how I felt on the inside,” Beek said.

The girl was living with her boyfriend Stein - who is an IT programmer and is 10 years older than her in age. Her parents did not approve of their age difference.&nbsp;

The girl had remained estranged for six years from her mother and three older sisters, while her father succumbed to cancer last year.&nbsp;

Ter Beek's boyfriend Stein was worried about her health and had asked her to get treatment. So, she went through various treatments to cure her mental illness.&nbsp;

This included going through 33 rounds of electroconvulsive therapy, in which the woman received electric current&nbsp;jolts to the brain.&nbsp;

However, after her last treatment in August 2020, the woman was informed by her psychiatrist that "there’s nothing more we can do for you. It’s never going to get any better.”

“After we heard that, we all kind of knew what that meant,” said Ter Beek, as she became more determined to apply to the Netherlands’&nbsp;Euthanasia Expertise Center in December 2020.&nbsp;

“I was always very clear: if it doesn’t get better, I can’t do this. My whole friends and my support system, we really did it together,” she said, in her interview with The Free Press.&nbsp;

According to&nbsp;reports, Ter Beek saw herself as an ambassador for the Dutch euthanasia programme and said that there is a proper protocol in place for preventing abuse of the system.&nbsp;

“We’ve had this law for more than 20 years. There are really strict rules, and it’s really safe," she said to the outlet.

However, she did not support “suicide kits” which are widely available for those who were not permitted state-sanctioned euthanasia and was not in support of an update to the law which would allow assisted suicide without approval of the state or prior medical intervention.

<h2>Ter Beek's back-up plan</h2>

“I’m pro-death. But we need to be careful to protect people who’re in psychosis or depressed and not thinking straight,” said Ter Beek. “If you go on the suicide kit road, you don’t know if somebody, maybe with the right help, could have chosen to live," she added.

China on Sunday (June 2) issued a warning stating that its armed forces were ready to "forcefully" stop Taiwan's independence, further calling for greater exchanges with the United States.&nbsp;

The remarks by Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun came after the very first substantive face-to-face talks with US&nbsp;defence chief&nbsp;in nearly 18 months at an annual security forum in Singapore.

"We have always been open to exchanges and cooperation, but this requires both sides to meet each other halfway," Dong told the Shangri-La Dialogue where he met with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Friday.&nbsp;

"We believe that we need more exchanges precisely because there are differences between our two militaries."

Dong and Austin held talks for over an hour at the luxury hotel that was hosting the forum.

Following the discussions, Austin said that telephonic conversations would resume between US and Chinese military commanders "in the coming months", while Beijing lauded the "stabilising" security relations between both countries.

This comes a week after China held military drills around self-ruled Taiwan and also warned to go into war with the island following the inauguration of President Lai Ching-te, who Beijing has described as a "dangerous separatist".

"China has maintained sufficient restraint in the face of rights infringements and provocation, but there are limits to this," Dong said.

Organisers of the protest, as per Times of Israel said some 120,000 demonstrators attended the Tel Aviv rally. Similar rallies reportedly took place in several places across the country.&nbsp;

The rally was also marked by clashes, speeches and massive banners one of which according to images from the protest read “Biden save them from Netanyahu,” seemingly speaking about the hostages, which Hamas took back to Gaza after attacking Israel on October 7.&nbsp;

<h2>Police and protesters clash</h2>

Protesters, during the rally on Saturday, clashed with the police, according to Israeli media reports and videos on social media.&nbsp;

A report by Haaretz said two protesters were arrested and that the police used a sound cannon to disperse the thousands of demonstrators gathered.&nbsp;

Israeli news site, Ynet reported that the police had also brought a water cannon to the rally but did not use it.&nbsp;

At least 14 police officers including Chief Superintendent Avi Ofer and the deputy commander of the Tel Aviv Police Department, were injured during clashes with the protesters, reported Ynet.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Thank you, President Biden’</h2>

Protesters thanked United States President Joe Biden for his speech which called on the Israeli government and Hamas to accept the recent ceasefire proposal by Israel and end the ongoing war in Gaza.&nbsp;

Biden, on Friday (May 31) unveiled a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-biden-details-new-three-phase-ceasefire-proposal-by-israel-amid-gaza-war-what-is-it-about-727842">three-phase Israeli proposal</a> to Hamas seeking to end the almost eight-month-long war. If accepted, the deal in question would lead to a ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave and the release of hostages held by the militant group.&nbsp;

“A step away from a victory that will never come, we’re surrounded by enemies, the whole world’s against us,” said the former head of the finance ministry’s budget department, Shaul Meridor at the rally, referring to Netanyahu’s repeated claims that Israel is close to victory. &nbsp;

He added, “Last night, we received a reminder of what a real leader looks like, who cares for Israel’s future and not his own. Thank you, President Biden.”&nbsp;

Hostages and Missing Families Forum, on Saturday night also called for mass protests warning that there would be “very strong attempts to torpedo the deal”.&nbsp;

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, two members of the Israeli PM’s right-wing coalition, have threatened to quit if the latest Gaza ceasefire deal is accepted, potentially leading to the collapse of the governing coalition.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the leader of the opposition Yair Lapid pledged to back the government if the Israeli PM accepted the plan.&nbsp;

Smotrich, in a post on social media, said he told Netanyahu he would “not be part of a government that agrees to the proposed outline and ends the war without destroying Hamas and bringing back all the hostages”.&nbsp;

Similarly, Ben-Gvir called the deal “reckless” and one that “constitutes a victory for terrorism and a security threat to the State of Israel”. He also vowed to “dissolve the government” rather than agree to the proposal.&nbsp;

Notably, Biden during his speech had warned that some people in the governing coalition have “made it clear” that they want to “occupy Gaza.”&nbsp;

In his statement, Gallant said that the defence establishment was actively exploring alternatives to the rule of the Islamist group Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;

"While we conduct our important military actions, the defence establishment is simultaneously assessing a governing alternative to Hamas," Gallant said adding,&nbsp;"We will not accept the rule of Hamas in Gaza at any stage in any process aimed at ending the war."&nbsp;

Although Gallant did not specify what these potential alternatives could be, he said, "We will isolate areas in Gaza, remove Hamas operatives from these areas, and introduce forces that will enable an alternative government to form - an alternative that threatens Hamas."

The painting by Monet, which was completed in 1873 shows people with umbrellas strolling in a blooming poppy field. At the time of the attack, the painting was covered by glass and suffered no permanent damage, a Musee d’Orsay spokesperson told AFP.&nbsp;

“The exhibition is entirely accessible to the public again,” said the spokesperson. The museum in Paris is home to some of the world’s most-loved Impressionist work.&nbsp;

<h2>Climate activist arrested</h2>

Citing police sources, AFP said that the climate activist has since been arrested. The museum spokesperson said that a criminal complaint would be registered over the latest in a growing number of cultural attacks.

The group which called itself a “French civil resistance movement which aims to spur a radical societal change for the environment and society” has reportedly been involved in several similar actions over the past few months.&nbsp;

“With China’s support to Russia the war will last longer. That is bad for the whole world, and the policy of China – who declares that it supports territorial integrity and sovereignty and declares it officially. For them it is not good,” Zelensky said while talking to the media.

Officially, China claims to have taken a neutral stance in the Russia-Ukraine war; however, its tacit military and economic support to Moscow is an open secret.

Meanwhile, in an interview with the Guardian in Kyiv, Zelensky warned that Donald Trump risked being a “loser president” if he wins November’s election and imposes a bad peace deal on Ukraine.

Many fear that Trump, who has claimed to end the war in "24 hours", will drastically cut aid to Ukraine, making it more vulnerable to Russia's offensive.

“Ukraine, barehanded, without weapons, will not be able to fight a multimillion [Russian] army,” Zelensky was quoted as saying.
