Nearly 2,000 children under the age of five are dying due to air pollution every day, said a report released by a US-based independent nonprofit research organisation&nbsp;on Wednesday (Jun 19). The recent study also found that polluted air is not only a second-leading risk factor for the deaths of children but also the general global population.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the report find?</h2>

According to the report titled State of Global Air (SoGA), air pollution accounted for 8.1 million deaths globally in 2021.&nbsp;

The study conducted by the US-based Health Effects Institute (HEI) also noted that it is not just the outdoor fine particulate matter which is affecting our health but also the indoor air pollution.&nbsp;

Children under five are said to be particularly vulnerable, with health effects linked to air pollution including premature birth, low birth weight, asthma and lung diseases, according to the study.&nbsp;

Exposure to air pollution was linked to more than 700,000 deaths of children under the age of five, in 2021, second only to malnutrition, said the report produced this year in partnership with UNICEF.&nbsp;

The study also found that a staggering 500,000 deaths of children, mostly in Asia and Africa, were linked to household air pollution because of cooking indoors with polluting fuels.&nbsp;

The report noted that some of the greatest health impacts of air pollution were seen in children, with them being “uniquely vulnerable” to the damage it causes as it can start in the womb and lead to health effects that can last a lifetime.

“Despite progress in maternal and child health, every day almost 2000 children under five years die because of health impacts linked to air pollution,” said UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Kitty van der Heijden, in a statement.&nbsp;

<h2>A global concern</h2>

The study which is based on data from more than 200 countries and territories across the world said that nearly every person on Earth breathes unhealthy levels of air pollution every day and it adversely affects our health.&nbsp;

“This new report offers a stark reminder of the significant impacts air pollution has on human health, with far too much of the burden borne by young children, older populations, and low- and middle-income countries,” said Dr Pallavi Pant, head of global health at HEI and the lead author of the report, in a statement.&nbsp;

She also called on cities and countries to consider “air quality and air pollution as high-risk factors when developing health policies and other noncommunicable disease prevention and control programs.”

PM2.5 particles have been attributed&nbsp;to more than 90 per cent (7.8 million) of air pollution-linked deaths across the world.&nbsp;

The PM2.5 particles, which are less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter, are small enough to enter the lungs and stay there and can also enter the bloodstream. These tiny particles can lead to diseases like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, lung cancer, and COPD, in adults.&nbsp;

A weakened&nbsp;South&nbsp;African President Cyril Ramaphosa pledged on Wednesday that his new multi-party government would work to improve basic living conditions for all citizens as he was sworn in for a second term in office.

Ramaphosa's&nbsp;African National Congress will be sharing power with five other parties after it was humbled in a May 29 election, losing its parliamentary majority for the first time in 30 years of democracy.

The voters "have been unequivocal in expressing their disappointment and disapproval of our performance in some of the areas in which we have failed them," Ramaphosa said at his inauguration ceremony in the capital Pretoria.

He said the voters wanted everyone to have enough food, decent homes, clean water, affordable and uninterrupted electricity supply, well-maintained roads, good care for the sick and elderly, quality schools and other basic services.

"Today, I stand before you as your humble servant to say we have heard you," he said. "In this moment we must choose to move forward, to close the distances between&nbsp;South&nbsp;Africans and to build a more equal society."

The ANC remains the largest party after the election, followed by the pro-business Democratic Alliance, a critic of the ANC's record in office which has agreed to join the new government.

IDEOLOGICAL DIVISIONS

While investors have welcomed the inclusion of the DA, which wants to boost growth through structural reforms and prudent fiscal policies, analysts say sharp ideological divisions between the parties could make the government unstable.

Just before the election, Ramaphosa signed into law a National Health Insurance bill that the DA says could collapse a creaking health system. It was unclear what would happen to that law under the new government.

The DA advocates scrapping the ANC's flagship Black economic empowerment programme, saying it hasn't worked -- a highly contentious topic in a nation grappling with huge inequalities, some inherited from apartheid.

Ramaphosa has yet to announce the make-up of his new government, to be negotiated with members of the new alliance.

A former liberation movement, the ANC came to power under Nelson Mandela's leadership in the 1994 elections that marked the end of apartheid and had long been unbeatable, but it lost its shine after presiding over years of decline.

The group, designated ISPK by the German intelligence service, "has managed to bring followers to Western Europe, possibly with the wave of refugees from Ukraine, who are now staying here in various Western European countries," Director General Thomas Haldenwang told the media on Tuesday (June 18).&nbsp;

The senior official of German intelligence agency BfV and Interior Minister Nancy Faeser presented an annual report on the intelligence operations, including a July 2023 operation that involved a series of arrests in Germany and the Netherlands.

The German authorities had arrested a total of nine people hailing from Central Asia, seven amongst whom lived in Germany. They are accused of founding a "domestic terrorist group" and preparing major attacks on European soil.&nbsp;

The US Justice Department on Tuesday accused Chinese "underground bankers" of helping Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel launder more than $50 million in drug trafficking proceeds.

An indictment unsealed in California charged 24 defendants with conspiracy to distribute cocaine and methamphetamine and money laundering offenses.

Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) chief Anne Milgram said a multi-year investigation dubbed "Operation Fortune Runner" had "uncovered a partnership between Sinaloa Cartel associates and a Chinese criminal syndicate operating in Los Angeles and China to launder drug money."

The Justice Department said the Chinese "underground bankers" had helped the cartel transfer drug profits from the United States to Mexico.

Chinese nationals are barred by that country's laws from moving more than $50,000 a year out of China, it said, and some individuals seeking to move more than that seek "informal alternatives" to move funds.

"Drug traffickers increasingly have partnered with Chinese underground money exchanges to take advantage of the large demand for US dollars from Chinese nationals," it said.

And Beijing's Ministry of Public Security said Wednesday it had worked on a US tip-off to arrest a suspect surnamed Tong involved in "drug-related money laundering".

The suspect and others had operated a car dealership in the United States that offered a currency exchange service for buyers, Beijing said.

"Later, they switched business and engaged in illegal foreign exchange trading and other criminal activities," it said in a post on social media platform Weibo.

The Justice Department said 20 of the 24 defendants named in the indictment are to appear in court in Los Angeles in the coming weeks.

Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood Randall said China and Mexico had each arrested one individual in connection with the case.

Randall said China's actions "build on the commitment made between President (Joe) Biden and President Xi (Jinping) at the Woodside Summit in November 2023 to resume bilateral cooperation to combat global illicit drug manufacturing and trafficking."

All of the accusations, including the one about paying for sex, have long been refuted by Gaetz, who previously dismissed them with the statement, "Someone is trying to recategorise my generosity to ex-girlfriends as something more untoward." Following a year-long inquiry, the Justice Department informed Gaetz in 2023 that it would not be pursuing charges against him.

Earlier this year, the Committee subpoenaed documents from the Justice Department about its investigation into the Florida lawmaker. Still, sources claimed that the agency has refused to provide the data. But after sending the company a subpoena, the committee was able to collect Gaetz's Venmo records, sources told ABC News.

A fresh update on the investigation into Gaetz was given by the House Ethics Committee on Tuesday. The bipartisan panel will continue to look into claims that the Florida congressman "engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use" and that he "sought to obstruct government investigations of his conduct." The committee has spoken with over a dozen witnesses, issued 25 subpoenas, and reviewed thousands of documents.

Furthermore, the committee stated that it will no longer look into claims made against Gaetz, including that he "may have accepted a bribe or improper gratuity, misused state identification records, converted campaign funds to personal use, and/or shared inappropriate images or videos on the House floor."

On Monday, Gaetz claimed that "every investigation into me ends the same way: my exoneration" and referred to the House Ethics Committee as "Soviet."

Investigators have also questioned many witnesses regarding a party in July 2017. According to sources, the committee was given a sworn statement by a woman who claimed to have been there at the Florida party that Gaetz also attended. According to reports, the committee has also been informed by several witnesses that they witnessed Gaetz using illegal drugs at parties.

The committee began its investigation against Gaetz in 2021 before putting it on hold while the Justice Department conducted its investigation.

"Some (died) because of natural causes and we had many old-age pilgrims. And some are due to the weather conditions, that's what we assume," the diplomat said. The deaths have also been confirmed by Jordan, Indonesia, Iran, Senegal, Tunisia and Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region.

In 2016, the Saudi government took several measures to help pilgrims brave the heat by erecting shaded areas, establishing drinking water points every 500 metres, and improving health care capacity.

Health authorities also advised people to stay hydrated and rest properly, especially during the peak hot hours between 11 am and 3 pm.

However, some pilgrims have reported not being allowed to rest during the ritual.

A Pakistani pilgrim, Mustafa, was quoted as saying by the news agency Reuters that police asked him to keep moving ahead as and when he stopped pushing his mother in a wheelchair to rest.&nbsp;

"I was amazed to see that there were no efforts made by the Saudi government to provide any shelter or any water," Mustafa said.
