Prosecutors in the US have charged an Ecuadorian migrant for raping a 13-year-old girl he bound and gagged at Kissena Park in Queens. The accused rapist, 25-year-old Christian Geovanny Inga-Landi, was presented in a New York criminal court Wednesday (Jun 19) where he was arraigned on charges of rape, predatory sexual assault, kidnapping and a raft of other felonies from the shocking June 13 attack.

“I was nervous at first, then got comfortable and recorded it,” Inga-Landi admitted in the court. He had scratches on his face and he kept his head down throughout the hearing. Judge Joanne B. Watters has ordered his detention without bail until July 1, the date of his next appearance in the court.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced the charges in court and lauded the victim&nbsp;and her male companion for bravery.

"I would like to talk a little bit about the bravery these two 13-year-old children have. It is amazing what they went through, their identification, their memory of the tattoo, the braces - all which was on point," Katz later said in a press conference.

As per the prosecutor, Inga-Landi approached the duo in a wooded area at the park, forcibly tied them up and gagged their mouths with cloth. After snatching their cell phones, he allegedly started raping the girl. Before fleeing the scene with their cell phones, Inga asked both of them to stay there for 20 minutes.

“This attack on two children in broad daylight in a city park strikes the very core of our society," stated Katz in a news release.

One notable discovery was the "last fugitive" in 2021: a skeleton of a man around 40 years old, found with a bag containing his valuable belongings, likely trying to flee towards the sea.

Unveiling the ancient beach on Wednesday, Italian Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano remarked, "Herculaneum, Pompeii, Oplontis: we are working on many projects."

He added, "In the budget law we have refinanced the excavations and there are construction sites that are active like never before and are revealing new treasures, which fuel the activity of scholars".

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's election-time woes continue to mount with looming threat of a Tory washout in July elections. In the latest incident, a police officer in Sunak's close protection team has been arrested and suspended over alleged bets about the timing of the general election.

The police constable from the Met's Royalty and Specialist Protection Command was arrested on June 17. He is accused of misconduct in public office. The officer was taken into custody and granted bail pending further enquiries.

Earlier last week, a senior aide to Rishi Sunak admitted the betting watchdog was investigating the alleged bets he placed on the date of the general election before its actual announcement.

Iran-backed Hezbollah group, an ally of the Palestinian militant unit Hamas, on Tuesday (Jun 18) released a nine-minute, 31-second-long drone footage, which showed aerial video of locations in Israel. The reconnaissance drones were apparently flying over northern Israel, including the Haifa port, but it's not sure when exactly it was filmed.&nbsp;

Hezbollah has often launched drones, even with explosives, towards northern Israel in recent months. Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, who is the group's head, said in November that they had been sending surveillance drones over Haifa, which is 27 kilometres from the Lebanese border.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has not commented on the video, which was shared by the groups associated with Hezbollah, including on its Telegram channel.&nbsp;

This comes amid US envoy Amos Hochstein called for the "urgent" de-escalation of cross-border exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and Israeli forces.

"The conflict... between Israel and Hezbollah has gone on for long enough. It's in everyone's interest to resolve it quickly and diplomatically -- that is both achievable and it is urgent," the presidential envoy said on a visit to Beirut.&nbsp;

In a filing with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) on June 11, whistleblower Sam Mohawk, who has worked as an inspector in Boeing's Quality Assurance unit since 2011, alleged that Boeing has approximately 300-400 damaged or defective 737 Max aircraft parts as of last year.&nbsp;

The UN rights chief Volker Turk, on Tuesday, revealed the disturbing number of civilians being killed in armed conflicts across the world to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.&nbsp;

Overall, the number of civilian deaths in armed conflict soared by 72 per cent in 2023, said the UN rights chief citing the data gathered by his office.&nbsp;

Turk noted how killing and injuring of civilians as well as the destruction of vital infrastructure have become a “daily occurrence”.&nbsp;

“Children shot at. Hospitals bombed. Heavy artillery launched on entire communities. All along with hateful, divisive, and dehumanising rhetoric,” said the UN rights chief.&nbsp;

The data, collected by the OHCHR, “horrifyingly” also indicates “that the proportion of women killed in 2023 doubled and that of children tripled, compared to the year prior,” Turk said.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Unconscionable death and suffering’</h2>

Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem are suffering a drastically worsening human rights environment, alongside “unconscionable death and suffering” in Gaza, the UN rights chief said.&nbsp;

Turk also said he was “appalled by the disregard for international human rights and humanitarian law by parties to the conflict” amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;

According to the UN data, over 120,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, have been killed or injured because of Israel’s military operation in the Palestinian enclave.&nbsp;

Since the beginning of the war in Gaza, in October through mid-June, 528 Palestinians, including 133 children, had been killed by Israeli forces or settlers in the West Bank, said Turk.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, 23 Israelis have been killed in the West Bank and Israel in clashes with or attacks by Palestinians, said the UN rights chief.&nbsp;

Turk went on to talk about the Ukraine war and ongoing conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and Syria. &nbsp;

The recent wave of Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure has destroyed 68 per cent of the war-torn country’s electricity production capacity, “bringing the system to a dangerous tipping point, especially ahead of winter,” said the UN rights chief.&nbsp;

According to Turk, as of the end of May this year the gap between the humanitarian funding requirements and available resources stood at $40.8 billion, which left appeals funded just 16.1 per cent on average.
