Donald Trump agrees to presidential debate with Kamala Harris

New revelations about the historic prisoner swap between US and Russia have surfaced.

The Kremlin confirmed that some of the freed Russians were intelligence agents, and the children of a Russian spy couple were unaware of their true identity until they&nbsp;reached home.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that a detained couple released in Slovenia —Artem and Anna Dultsev— were undercover intelligence officers, known as 'illegals'.

Posing as Argentine residents, they were operating from Ljubljana, which was their base since 2017 to relay Moscow's orders to other sleeper agents. They&nbsp;were arrested on espionage charges in 2022.

Israel's premier intelligence agency, Mossad, hired Iranian security agents to plant the bomb in three rooms of the guesthouse where Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was staying, a report in the Telegraph has claimed.

“They are now certain that Mossad hired agents from the Ansar al-Mahdi protection unit. Upon further investigation, they discovered additional explosive devices in two other rooms,” an&nbsp;Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) official was quoted as saying by the publication.&nbsp;

The report added that the original plan to assassinate Haniyeh was in May when he attended the funeral of Ebrahim Raisi, Iran's former president.&nbsp;

However, the plan could not be executed due to the large crowds gathered in the building which increased the possibility of failure.&nbsp;

Later, two agents placed the explosive devices in the IRGC&nbsp;guesthouse in north Tehran where Haniyeh was staying. CCTV footage showed the agents entering and exiting multiple rooms within minutes, according to officials.&nbsp;

The agents then snuck out of Iran but still had a source in Tehran. After confirmation that Haniyeh was in one of the rooms, the explosive was detonated from abroad.&nbsp;

The incident has led to fissures within the IRGC, with different sectors accusing each other of the failure,

Austin said given the gravity of the case, the final decision regarding the fate of the accused persons should 'rest with' him.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I have determined that in light of the significance of the decision to enter into pre-trial agreements with the accused…responsibility for such a decision should rest with me as the superior authority," wrote Austin in the memo.&nbsp;

"I hereby withdraw your authority. Effective immediately, in the exercise of my authority, I hereby withdraw from the three pre-trial agreements," added&nbsp;Austin referring to&nbsp;Escallier.&nbsp;

The three accused, Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin Attash, and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al-Hawsawi have been held at the US Navy base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for years without going to trial.

Earlier this week,&nbsp;Escallier announced she had signed a deal with Khalid, the alleged mastermind of the attack and his accomplices. The decision immediately drew criticism from all quarters with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell leading the pack.&nbsp;

"The only thing worse than negotiating with terrorists is negotiating with them after they are in custody," said McConnell at the time.&nbsp;

Additionally, some of the victims' families were also distraught that the men accused of killing their loved ones had made a plea with the US government and effectively sidestepped the death penalty.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The three men have been accused of a litany of charges, including attacking civilians, murder in violation of the laws of war, hijacking and terrorism.

Notably, Pentagon officials claimed that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were not involved in Austin's decision to rescind the controversial deal.&nbsp;

According to reports, the Biden administration had reportedly rejected the terms of a plea in September last year. The 9/11 attack was the deadliest assault on the US since the World War II when the Japanese attacked the Pearl Harbour in Hawaii in 1941, killing 2,400 people.&nbsp;

Israel has been bracing for an impact after back-to-back assassinations of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and top Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut were linked to it.&nbsp;
