Tropical storm Debby formed late Saturday (Aug 3) and was expected to surge up into a hurricane before it slams into Florida’s northern Gulf Coast shoreline on Monday, the National Hurricane Center said.

The storm turned into a tropical storm after days of spinning as a broad, sloppy system in the Atlantic, finally shoving off Cuba’s northern coast on Saturday evening, when it was about 100 miles west-southwest of Key West, Florida, forecasters said.

“It’s become clearer and clearer that Debby will become a hurricane before it makes landfall,” said Jamie Rhome, the deputy director of the NHC, urging people to heed evacuation orders.

The storm was crawling at 14 mph (23 kph) into the Gulf Coast about 240 miles (386 km) south of Tampa, where its winds were expected to grow from 40 mph up to 70 mph or more as it gains strength overnight.

“This is a life threatening situation,” the NHC said in a late Saturday report.

Debby was already whipping up rain squalls, winds of 40 mph and surging tides in Key West, Florida on Saturday night.

“There are a host of hazards, not just the wind,” Rhome said.

He warned of storm surges up to 7 feet (2 m) along Florida’s Big Bend area where it is expected to hit just southeast of Florida’s Panhandle.

“Now, I stand at six feet tall,” Rhome said. “So that’s over my head,” he said.

He added that heavy rains of 10 inches (25 cm) with spots of 15 inches of rain could be expected, more if the storm slows down or stalls over land.

Governor Ron DeSantis has called up 3,000 National Guardsmen and put most of the state’s cities and counties under emergency orders ahead of the expected landfall.

US forecasters expect a large number of Atlantic hurricanes to form in the 2024 season, which began June 1, with four to seven major hurricanes forming out of 25 named storms. That is more than the record-breaking 2005 season that spawned hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Only one hurricane, Beryl, has formed in the Atlantic so far this year. The earliest Category 5 storm on record, it ravaged the Caribbean and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula before rolling up the Gulf Coast of Texas as a Category 1 storm, with winds up to 95 mph.

Debby is expected to follow a similar track as the deadly 2022 Hurricane Ian, which killed at least 103 people in Florida and caused billions of dollars in damage as it made its way along the Gulf Coast.

According to a report in The Jerusalem Post, having named a fictional Mossad operative, the channels doubled down and went as far as tracing the origins of the shadowy, Indian-sounding Israeli assassin.&nbsp;

Some reports stated that Nakesh was "a former IDF officer with experience in specialised operations" and had served in a "secret intelligence unit".

The Turkish media was slow to react to the prank but eventually did realise their mistake and scrubbed off all&nbsp;the mentions of the mythical assassin.

Couple of days after&nbsp;US media said&nbsp;Haniyeh was killed in a bomb blast at a guesthouse he was staying at in Tehran, the&nbsp;Telegraph has published a report stating that the Hamas chief was neutralised by Mossad who hired Iranian agents.&nbsp;

The publication said that Mossad's Iranian picks placed the explosives in three separate rooms and detonated one of them from outside when Haniyeh was confirmed to be in the room.

“They are now certain that Mossad hired agents from the Ansar al-Mahdi protection unit. Upon further investigation, they discovered additional explosive devices in two other rooms,” an&nbsp;Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) official was quoted as saying by the publication.&nbsp;

The Vatican on Saturday (Aug 3) slammed the Paris Olympics organisers for the opening ceremony that allegedly parodied Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper" painting.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A week after the ceremony, the Vatican said it "deplored the offence" caused to Christians by the ceremony that featured drag queens and transgenders who posed like Jesus and his Twelve Apostles from the famous painting.

"The Holy See was saddened by certain scenes at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games and cannot but join the voices raised in recent days to deplore the offence done to many Christians and believers of other religions," read the statement issued in French.&nbsp;

“At a prestigious event where the whole world comes together to share common values, there should be no ridiculous allusions to religion,” it added.

While criticism poured from across the globe, Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony defended the production by calling it a symbol of 'inclusion'. According to Jolly, the ceremony did not mock the Christian painting, albeit celebrated the&nbsp;Greek god of wine Dionysus.

“Our subject was not to be subversive. We never wanted to be subversive. We wanted to talk about diversity. Diversity means being together,” Jolly said.

While Jolly defended the ceremony, Paris 2024 organisers apologised to Catholics and other Christian groups angered.&nbsp;

"Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group. (The opening ceremony) tried to celebrate community tolerance," Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps told a press conference.

"We believe this ambition was achieved. If people have taken any offence we are really sorry."
