An Indian doctor in Michigan, US, was detained by police and held in jail on a $2 million bond on charges related to serious sexual offences, including recording nude images and videos of children and women. The 40-year-old doctor, identified as Oumair Aejaz, had hidden cameras inside bathrooms, changing areas, hospital rooms, and even his own home.

Local media reported that he was arrested on August 8 after his wife produced the explicit videos before the authorities.

He reportedly came to the US from India in 2011 on a work visa. He started working in Michigan only after 2018.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said Tuesday (Aug 20) that Aejaz had also recorded himself performing sexual acts on women in an unconscious state. He said the full extent of the crime is not known yet, and it could take months to fully investigate the matter.

Following his arrest, several search warrants have been issued, related to the doctor’s computers, phones, and 15 external devices. Bouchard said they had found a single hard drive that had over 13,000 videos stashed in it. Police believe the accused may also have uploaded such videos to cloud storage.

Oumair Aejaz was formally indicted on August 13 with one count of child sexually abusive activity, four counts of capturing an image of an unclothed person, and five counts of using a computer to commit a crime.

Philippines: The country reported its first case of mpox virus, according to its health department on Monday, August 19. The case reported is a 33-year-old Filipino man with no travel history.&nbsp;

Pakistan: The health department of Pakistan confirmed that three cases of mpox were detected in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday, August 16. The patients had arrived from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), after which the infection was detected.

Sweden: The first case of the new strain of mpox virus recorded outside of Africa was confirmed by the Swedish authorities on Thursday, August 15. The person got infected during a visit to Africa, where a major outbreak has been reported.

But Lai said China's "military expansionism" was taking place elsewhere, pointing to Beijing's joint exercises with Russia in the South China Sea, Western Pacific and Sea of Japan.

"Such actions are intended to intimidate China's neighbours and undermine regional peace and stability," he said.

"Taiwan will not be intimidated. We will take responsibility to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait."

Lai has repeatedly made overtures for dialogue with Beijing but talks have effectively dried up since the 2016 election of his predecessor, Tsai Ing-wen, who has long said Taiwan is not part of China.&nbsp;
