But after the licensed hunt of 2023, the population dropped to 2,450.

Sweden’s Big Five, a conservation group, alleged the&nbsp;government was on a clear path to cull the big carnivores to 1,400, which is the minimum number required for conservation purposes.&nbsp;This would represent a 60 per cent loss from the 2008 peak.

Officially known as Ursus arctos, brown&nbsp;bears mature slowly, taking up to four years to become adults.

Kindberg noted that only a few cubs are born at a time, and that too once in two to three years.&nbsp;“During the hunt, it is very difficult to tell females from males, and the females are much more valuable to the population. Therefore, you risk ending up in a situation that may take a very long time to repair.”

In addition to the annual licensed hunts, brown bears are allowed to be killed in 'protective' hunts if they're considered damaging to property or threat to life.

Last year, 648 bears were shot during licensed hunting, while 74 more were killed during protective hunting.

The ship was later "struck by two unidentified projectiles before being hit by a third," the agency, which is run by Britain's Royal Navy, said.

"There is a fire onboard and the vessel has lost engine power," it said, adding that there were no reports of casualties.

"The vessel is drifting and not under command," UKMTO said.

A spokesperson for the Greek port authority identified the vessel as the Greek-flagged Sounion, an oil products tanker owned by Delta Tankers, a Greek shipping company.

The ship carrying&nbsp;a crew of 25 people, mostly Filipinos, departed from Iraq and was destined for a port near Athens, where many refineries are based, the Greek port authority said.

No injuries have been reported so far, according to the port authority, which said the ship could have been hit either by missiles or drones.

There was no immediate claim for the attack, but it comes as the Iran-backed Houthi rebels keep up a nine-month-old campaign against international shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden that they say is in support of Gaza.

Their campaign of rocket and drone attacks has severely disrupted maritime traffic through the Red Sea, which normally accounts for up to 12 percent of world trade.

A mining accident in southwest China on Wednesday (Aug 21) killed seven people, with one person left trapped, according to China's local media.&nbsp;

The accident occurred at around 10 am as the workers were closing a ventilation shaft at a coal mine in Sichuan province of China's Leshan, China's state broadcaster CCTV reported.&nbsp;

However, the outlet has not given any details of what happened during the incident, but they stated that initially, the accident trapped eight people.&nbsp;

According to the state broadcaster, as of Wednesday afternoon, seven people have been found dead, and one other trapped person is still being searched for with all-out efforts.

Search and rescue operations are still underway for the missing person.

Two men working at a Japanese company in Taiwan have been allegedly indicted for stealing technology from their Japan-based employer on behalf of a Chinese company, according to Taiwan state media.&nbsp;

The Japan-based company specialises&nbsp;in technologies, including cameras and mobile phone lens functions.

The suspects, surnamed&nbsp;Wu and Huang, worked as research and development manager, and chief engineer&nbsp;respectively. They were also involved in designing and developing manufacturing processes for the company's patented microactuators.&nbsp;

They were suspected of copying and disclosing the company's core technology to a man surnamed Wang, who owns a precision industry company in China.&nbsp;

Wang consulted Wu to integrate the company's industrial supply chain and promised him an annual salary of NT$5 million if he worked for his company. He also paid USD 98,000 and USD 66,000 to Wu and his spouse and agreed to give the spouse stocks and a nominal company position. Wu and Huang are accused of breaching trust and obtaining records from another's computer without good reason, in violation of the Criminal Code. A nearby Dutch-flagged ship, Sir Robert Baden Powell, is reported to have seen Bayesian lit up during the storm. However, according to Captain Karsten Borner, when the turbulent weather passed, the yacht had already sunk and a red flare could be seen in the dark sky.&nbsp;

It is believed that the yacht&nbsp;was surprised by how strong the tornado was, damaging the mast in the way. It sank very quickly, and may not have given enough time to&nbsp;the six people on board to escape.

Upon reaching the scene, Borner and his crew found a lifeboat carrying 15 people and alerted the Coast Guard. Some of the people rescued were in an injured state.

A woman onboard the vessel described how she and her one-year-old daughter survived the sinking of the yacht and were brought to safety by the Dutch ship.

The search operation continues on the third day, Wednesday, August 21, as six people remain missing since the yacht sank in the depths. However, hopes of finding them alive remain low.
