<p>This development comes after the police said the main suspect- a 26-year-old Syrian-&nbsp;had given himself up and admitted taking part in Friday's rampage at the "Festival of Diversity" in Solingen.</p>

<h2><strong>Suspect arrived in Germany in 2022</strong></h2>

<p>The Syrian man turned himself in and admitted to the gruesome crime. Citing local media, AFP reported that the suspect arrived in Germany in December 2022&nbsp;and had a protected immigration status often given to those fleeing war-torn Syria.</p>

<p>However, the Islamic State (ISIS) said that the perpetrator was theirs and the&nbsp;attack was carried out as "revenge for Muslims in Palestine and everywhere", in an apparent reference to the Gaza war.</p>

<p>ISIS did not immediately provide any evidence for its assertion and it was not clear how close any relationship between the attacker and Islamic State was.</p>

<p>Two men aged 56 and 67 and a 56-year-old woman were killed, officials said. Four of the wounded remained in serious condition. All of the victims were stabbed in the neck, according to police.</p>

<p>Solingen is a city of some 160,000 people located between Duesseldorf and Cologne.</p>

<p>Up to 75,000 visitors had been expected to attend the "Festival of Diversity", which has now been cancelled.</p>

<p>The police also arrested a 15-year-old&nbsp;suspected of failing to report a criminal act. Witnesses had allegedly seen the teen discussing the attack, said Markus Caspers, prosecutor of Duesseldorf, just west of Solingen.</p>

<p>Israel launched pre-emptive strikes at Hezbollah targets in Lebanon on Sunday (August 24) after the Iran-backed militant group announced a large-scale operation against Israel. Hezbollah said that it launched "more than 320" Katyusha rockets towards Israel.</p>

<p>"Approximately 100 IAF fighter jets ... struck and destroyed thousands of Hezbollah rocket launcher barrels that were located and embedded in southern Lebanon," an Israeli military statement read. "Most of these launchers were aimed toward northern Israel, and some were aimed toward central Israel."</p>

<p>The current state of escalation comes after weeks of tension, with Hezbollah vowing to avenge the assassination of its military commander, Fuad Shukr, last month.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In the context of the initial response" to the killing of Shukr, Hezbollah said it "began an air attack with a large number of drones" targeting deep into Israel. Hezbollah also targeted "a number of enemy positions and barracks and Iron Dome platforms... with a large number of rockets,"&nbsp;adding that "military operations will take some time to complete."</p>

<p>According to a statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has declared a state of emergency across the country for the next 48 hours.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This "special situation on the home front," as it is officially termed, grants the IDF Home Front Command expanded authority to impose restrictions on the civilian population.</p>

<p>"The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) identified the Hezbollah terrorist organization as preparing to fire missiles and rockets toward Israeli territory. In response to these threats, the IDF is striking terror targets in Lebanon," the Israeli military said in a statement. "Israeli Air Force (IAF) fighter jets are currently striking targets belonging to the Hezbollah terrorist organization that pose an imminent threat to the citizens of the State of Israel."</p>

<p>As a precautionary measure, Israel's Ben Gurion International Airport announced delays and diversions of flights early Sunday.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>The United States responds&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>The United States said it would "keep supporting Israel's right to defend itself'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to US National Security Council Spokesperson Sean Savett, "At President Joe Biden's direction, senior US officials have been communicating continuously with their Israeli counterparts. We will keep supporting Israel's right to defend itself, and we will keep working for regional stability."</p>

<p>The current escalation follows increasing hostilities that began after Hamas'&nbsp;unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7 last year, which resulted in the deaths of nearly 1,200 people, most of whom were civilians. Israel's subsequent military campaign in Gaza has killed over 40,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the latest <em>CNN </em>report, Tony Fabrizio and Travis Tunis - two of Trump's pollsters, wrote a concerning memo, saying that they foresaw an extended honeymoon period for Vice President Kamala Harris who replaced Joe Biden in the presidential race last month.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Post-DNC we will likely see another small (albeit temporary) bounce for Harris in the public polls. Post-Convention bounces are a phenomenon that happens after most party conventions,” the memo says.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“So don’t be surprised to see Harris get a temporary 2 to 3 point bump,” it added.</p>

<p>The pollsters urged the Trump supporters to keep their 'eye on the ball', referring to the states where the Republican leader had a greater chance of winning.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hundreds of cops in the Philippines&nbsp;backed by riot squads raided a vast religious compound in Davao on Saturday (Aug 24) in search of a local preacher accused of sexual abuse and human trafficking.</p>

<p>According to a report by the news agency Associated Press on Sunday, the accused preacher was identified as Apollo Quiboloy. He leads the group&nbsp;Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC).</p>

<p>The report said that during the raid, a supporter of the KOJC&nbsp;died due to a heart attack. The police said that the raid was live-streamed&nbsp;online by a local TV network owned by the group.</p>

<p>The police also said that the death was not related to the police operations.</p>

<h2><strong>Quiboloy nowhere to be found</strong></h2>

<p>The police brought equipment that could detect people behind cement walls. But by mid-afternoon, they found no sign of Apollo Quiboloy in the compound. His followers, many of whom filmed the raid, yelled at the police, questioning the legality of the raid and pronouncing the innocence of the preacher.</p>

<p>Police Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III, who led the raid, said officers wanted to serve warrants for the arrest of Quiboloy for various criminal cases, including child abuse and human trafficking.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Justifying the massive deployment at the compound Brig. Gen. Torre told reporters that there were&nbsp;more than 40 buildings and structures to be searched in the compound, where large numbers of Quiboloy’s followers heckled and opposed the raid noisily.</p>

<p>“We won’t leave here until we get him,” he added and pointed out that the police had&nbsp;no bail warrants for Quiboloy and four others for very grave crimes, including human trafficking, child abuse and other cases.</p>

<h2><strong>Who is&nbsp;Apollo Quiboloy?</strong></h2>

<p>Apollo Quiboloy&nbsp;was born on April 25, 1950, and founded the KOJC in 1985.&nbsp;Quiboloy claims to be the appointed son of God. In 2019, he claimed he stopped a major earthquake from hitting the southern Philippines.</p>

<p>He was a close supporter and spiritual advisor of former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is not the first time that Quiboloy has faced accusations of sexual abuse.</p>

<p>In 2021, federal prosecutors in the United States&nbsp;announced the indictment of Quiloboy for&nbsp;allegedly having sex with women and underage girls who faced threats of abuse and “eternal damnation” unless they catered to the self-proclaimed “son of God.”</p>

<p>Quiboloy and two of his top administrators were among nine people named in a superseding indictment returned by a federal grand jury and unsealed in November 2021.</p>

<p>The KOJC said that its leader was&nbsp;ready to face the charges in court, but he went into hiding after a Philippine court ordered his arrest and several others for child and sexual abuse.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Philippine Senate has separately ordered Quiboloy’s arrest for refusing to appear in committee hearings that were looking into criminal allegations against him.</p>

<p>A year after the brutal beating and consequent death of Tyre Nichols in the US, another Memphis, Tennessee, Police Department (MPD) officer pleaded guilty to civil rights violations in the case. Federal prosecutors&nbsp;recommended a 40-year sentence for the police officer, Emmitt Martin, on Friday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Emmitt Martin is the second former police officer to plead guilty in the fatal killing of Nichols, leaving three officers facing trial in US federal court next month.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Martin has pleaded guilty to civil rights and conspiracy charges arising out of the Jan. 7, 2023, incident, according to a statement by the US Department of Justice. Moreover, the judge had set a deadline, scheduled for Monday, for any plea agreements in the case.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nichols' mother, Row Vaughn Wells, was also present in the courtroom, and she quietly nodded her head when the judge accepted Martin's change of plea.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What happened with Tyre Nichols?</strong></h2>

<p>Nichols, who died on January 10 last year, was kicked, punched and hit with a police baton after a traffic stop. The officers, in their defence, said they pulled Nichols over because he was driving recklessly, however, Police Chief Cerelyn "CJ" Davis said that no evidence was found to support the allegation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Later on January 27, police released a video showing five officers beating Nichols as he yelled for his mother about a block away from the home they shared.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to an autopsy report, Nichols died from blows to the head, adding that the manner of death was homicide. It further described brain injuries, cuts and bruises to the head and other parts of the body.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Another ex-officer pleaded guilty</strong></h2>

<p>In November 2023, former Memphis officer Desmond Mills Jr also pleaded guilty, with prosecutors recommending a 15-year prison sentence for Mills.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Moreover, both Mills and Martin could be called to testify against the final three, including Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith, who have also been charged with federal civil rights violations and have pleaded not guilty.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The remaining three defendants will face a federal trial scheduled for September 9," the US Department of Justice stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When he was asked about Modi’s hug with Putin and now with President Zelensky, Jaishankar said, “In our part of the world, when people meet people, they are given to embracing each other, it may not be part of your culture but I can assure you it is part of ours. In fact, today, I think, I saw, Prime Minister (Modi) also embrace President Zelensky.”</p>

<p>The foreign minister added that he had seen PM Modi hugging several world leaders in the past as well and there was nothing unusual about it.</p>

<p>“And I have seen him do it with a number of other leaders in a number of other places. So, I think, we have a slight ... cultural gap here in terms of what these courtesies mean,” Jaishankar added.</p>
