Four inmates were shot dead by Russian security forces on Friday (Aug 23) after they took hostages at a penal colony, fatally stabbed four prison staff, and posted online videos claiming to be Islamic State militants, according to officials.

"Snipers of the special forces of the Russian National Guard in the Volgograd region, with four precise shots, neutralised four prisoners who had taken prison employees hostage. The hostages have been released," national guard state news agency RIA quoted them&nbsp;as saying.

The federal prison service confirmed that all four attackers had been killed. It also reported that four of its staff had succumbed to stab wounds, while others received treatment in hospital.

A total of eight prison employees and four inmates had been held hostage, the service added.

The operation to free the hostages was carried out after Russian&nbsp;President Vladimir Putin, during a weekly Security Council meeting, requested updates from the interior minister, the FSB security chief, and the head of the national guard regarding the situation.

UN agencies have called for Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas to agree to a seven-day humanitarian pause in their 10-month-old war to allow vaccination campaigns to proceed in the territory.

"Polio does not distinguish between Palestinian and Israeli children," the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) said on Friday in a post on X.

"Delaying a humanitarian pause will increase the risk of spread among children," Philippe Lazzarini added.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement, that the baby, who has lost movement in his lower left leg, is now in stable condition.

In an effort to combat the spread of polio, the WHO has announced plans for two rounds of vaccination campaigns in the Gaza Strip, starting in late August and continuing into September 2024.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi kept up with his tradition of hugging the host as he stepped into war-torn Ukraine on Friday (Aug 23). The internet was inundated with photos of PM Modi embracing Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, in stark contrast to visuals that came from Moscow last month when the Indian PM&nbsp;hugged host, President Vladimir Putin, in a similar fashion.

The Modi-Putin embrace drew sharp criticism from Western leaders as well as Zelensky.

“It is a huge disappointment and a devastating blow to peace efforts to see the leader of the world’s largest democracy hug the world’s most bloody criminal in Moscow on such a day,” Zelensky wrote, referring to a Russian attack on a children’s hospital in Kyiv the day Modi arrived in Russia.

WION on Friday asked Zelensky whether his perception of PM Modi had changed after the Indian leader extended a similar gesture towards him while visiting Kyiv.

In response, Zelensky said his criticism was not directed against PM Modi’s visit to Russia but Putin’s attack on Ukrainian children.

“Signal of condemnation was not because of (Indian) prime minister came to see Putin but because the PM came to Putin and Putin killed our children. And we wanted to have some reaction, to hear some response. I think it’s important that democratic world is understanding what’s happening,” Zelensky told WION.
