Malaysia's communications regulator has defended a plan for local telecommunications firms to re-route web traffic through their own domain name system (DNS) servers, saying the move was meant to protect users from harmful online content.

The directive, which takes effect on Sept. 30, has prompted new concerns, including from some ruling party officials, of growing online censorship and fears that it could jeopardise the country's digital economy.

DNS is a system that translates domain names into numerical addresses used by computers to locate websites on the internet.

While local internet service providers, or ISPs, often operate their own DNS servers, some web users use public DNS servers, such as those provided by Google or Cloudflare, to gain faster internet speeds or access websites blocked on local ISPs.

Under the government plan, user requests from such third-party DNS servers will be redirected to those operated by&nbsp;Malaysian ISPs.

In a statement late on Saturday, the&nbsp;Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) denied the measure was "draconian", saying it was aimed at protecting vulnerable groups from malicious or harmful content, such as online gambling, pornography, copyright infringements, phishing or financial scams.

"DNS redirection ensures that harmful websites are blocked while legitimate websites remain reachable without noticeable disruption," MCMC said, adding that it had blocked 24,277 websites between 2018 and Aug. 1, 2024 to protect users' safety.

Users facing trouble accessing sites could file a complaint to ISPs, while blocked websites can appeal to regulators, it said.

State assemblyman Syed Ahmad Syed Abdul Rahman Alhadad, a member of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's People's Justice Party, had called the plan "draconian", saying it could negatively effect&nbsp;Malaysia's digital economy - which has been boosted this year by large investments from major tech firms such as Microsoft, Amazon, Nvidia, and Google.

Lim Yi Wei, an assemblywoman from the Democratic Action Party, part of Anwar's ruling coalition, said the plan amounted to censorship and posed cybersecurity risks such as DNS poisoning, where web traffic could be redirected by hackers.

The move comes amid heightened scrutiny of online content under Anwar, who ran on a progressive platform before being voted into power in 2022.

A New York judge on Friday (Sep 6) delayed former United States President Donald Trump’s sentencing in the hush money trial until after the&nbsp;presidential elections which will take place on November 5. Judge Juan Merchan gave the ruling after Trump’s attorneys urged him to postpone the September 18 sentencing to allow the GOP leader to also appeal a pending ruling involving presidential immunity.

"This is not a decision this Court makes lightly but it is the decision which in this Court's view, best advances the interests of justice," the judge wrote.

The ruling in the case was expected on September 18.

Trump has already been convicted in May on 34 counts of manipulating business records to hide payments allegedly made to adult film star Stormy Daniels near the end of the 2016 presidential campaign.

He added that Eygi was being treated on the way to hospital.

Fouad Nafaa, the head of the Rafidia hospital in Nablus said that the doctors tried to resuscitate her, but she died on the operating table.&nbsp;

Road diggers began clearing piles of debris and rubble left by the operation, which involved hundreds of troops and police backed by helicopters and drones entering all areas of the city and the adjacent refugee camp as well as surrounding villages.

Thousands of residents were displaced from their homes during the nine-day operation, during which troops fought running gunbattles with Palestinian fighters from factions including Hamas and Islamic Jihad and Fatah.

"When they entered, they used bulldozers and began destroying everything. They left nothing," said Jenin resident Samaher Abu Nassa.

Water and electricity services remain cut and around 20 km of roadway was dug up by Israeli bulldozers, a tactic the military said was aimed at neutralizing roadside bombs but which has ripped up much of the centre of the city.

A statement from the military said 30 explosives planted under the roads had been dismantled.

The Palestinian foreign ministry accused the military of transferring the tactics used to level the Gaza Strip into the West Bank.

Jenin, in the northern part of the West Bank, has long been a stronghold of Palestinian armed factions, and the Israeli military said the operation, which also targeted the city of Tulkarm, was aimed at thwarting Iranian-backed militant groups planning attacks on Israeli civilians.

It said troops had killed 14 militant fighters during the operation, including the local commander of Hamas in Jenin. Forces also arrested 30 suspects and confiscated weapons and dismantled infrastructure including an underground weapons storage depot underneath a mosque and an explosives workshop.

On Friday, thousands, including large numbers of armed men who fired into the air, joined funeral processions for people killed during the fighting. Many of the bodies were wrapped either in Palestinian flags or the green, black and yellow flags of Hamas, Islamic Jihad or Fatah.

Amsterdam's famous Rijksmuseum had to be shut down Saturday (Sep 7) after climate protesters linked with the Extinction Rebellion (XR) group raided the art gallery. A spokesperson for the museum said the site was now closed "until further notice" to ensure the safety of visitors, staff and artworks in the collection.

"Any action that jeopardizes this is unacceptable," the spokesperson added.

XR in a statement said that the purpose of the blockade was to force the art gallery to snap its ties with the ING bank, its main sponsor. The group alleged that the bank was financing projects that were harming the climate.
