<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged his countrymen to engage in coitus&nbsp;during work breaks, in an attempt to reverse the country's declining birth rate, according to a report in&nbsp;<em>Metro.&nbsp;</em></p>

<p>Russia's fertility rate&nbsp;of just 1.5 children per woman, significantly below the 2.1 replacement rate, required to maintain population stability has caused serious concerns. Additionally, more than one million, mainly younger, Russians have left the country ever since Putin's invasion of Ukraine started two years ago.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The preservation of the Russian people is our highest national priority,” Putin was quoted as saying.</p>

<p>“The fate of Russia depends on how many of us there will be. It is a question of national importance," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Similar sentiments were echoed by&nbsp;Health Minister Dr Yevgeny Shestopalov who dismissed work as an excuse for not procreating.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Being very busy at work is not a valid reason, but a lame excuse. You can engage in procreation during breaks because life flies by too quickly,” said&nbsp;Shestopalov when quizzed about the younger population being overwhelmed by work and not having the energy to have sex.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is not the first instance when Putin has sounded the alarm regarding Russia's population decline. In December last year, he urged Russian women to give birth to as many as eight children and make it a “norm” to create large families.</p>

<p>Russia's birth rate has hit its lowest point since 1999 with the number of child births falling below 100,000 in the month of June this year. 599,600 children were born in Russia in the first half of 2024, which is 16,000 fewer than in the same period in 2023, according to statistics published by Rosstat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, 325,100 deaths were recorded between January and June which suggested an acceleration in the country's natural decline of population.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

Israel's initial report on American woman Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi's death doesn't exonerate troops, says US

<p>Thirty-four women prisoners went on hunger strike in an Iranian prison Sunday to mark two years since protests erupted against clerical authorities, the foundation of Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi said.</p>

<p>"Today, on the 15th September 2024, 34 female political prisoners in Evin Prison have gone on a hunger strike in commemoration of the second anniversary of the 'Woman, Life, Freedom' movement and the killing of&nbsp;Mahsa&nbsp;(Jina)&nbsp;Amini," it said.</p>

<p>Amini&nbsp;was a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd whose death in custody after her arrest for allegedly violating the strict dress code for women had sparked demonstrations.</p>

<p>The prisoners abstained from food "in solidarity with the protesting people of Iran, against the government's oppressive policies," the foundation added.</p>

<p>Mohammadi, who has campaigned against the compulsory wearing of the hijab and the death penalty in Iran, has been in Tehran's Evin prison since November 2021.</p>

<p>She has spent much of the past decade in and out of jail and has staged repeated hunger strikes.</p>

<p>"On the second anniversary of the 'Women, Life, Freedom' movement, we reaffirm our commitment to achieving democracy, freedom, and equality and to defeating theocratic despotism," Mohammadi said in a statement on her official X account.</p>

<p>"Today, we raise our voices louder and strengthen our resolve."</p>

<p>Mohammadi's children received the Nobel Peace Price on her behalf in 2023 while she was incarcerated.</p>

<p>According to her family, she was on a hunger strike at the time in solidarity with the Baha'i community, Iran's largest religious minority, who say they are targeted by discrimination.</p>

<p>UN experts last month accused Iran of denying Mohammadi proper healthcare.</p>

<p>She "was reportedly subjected to physical violence" in Evin on August 6, during which she "allegedly lost consciousness, and sustained injuries to her ribcage and other parts of her body", the experts said.</p>

<p>Iranian authorities acknowledged a confrontation had taken place, but blamed Mohammadi for "provocation" and denied any prisoners had been beaten.</p>

<p>Women-led protests erupted after&nbsp;Amini&nbsp;died in custody on September 16, 2022.</p>

<p>The protests rattled Iran's leadership that autumn and winter, but authorities crushed them, with rights group Amnesty International saying security forces used assault rifles and shotguns in the crackdown.</p>

<p>Human rights groups say at least 551 people were killed. Thousands more were arrested, according to the United Nations.</p>
