Police and civilian self-defence groups killed 28 gang members in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince in an overnight operation, authorities said Tuesday, as the government seeks to regain some control of the city.

Officers stopped a truck carrying gang members in the wealthy suburb of Petion-Ville at about 2:00 am, while a bus ferrying gang members was intercepted in the city centre, Haitian National Police spokesman Lionel Lazarre told AFP.

Police opened fire in both encounters, killing 10, and then chased down those who fled with the help of self-defence groups, formed by residents opposed to the gangs and their violent rule over swathes of the country.

Last year, in a gruesome chapter of vigilante reprisals, a dozen alleged gang members were stoned and burned alive by residents in Port-au-Prince.

Viv Ansanm spokesman Jimmy "Barbecue" Cherisier, a notorious gang leader, has called for the resignation of the transitional government currently leading the country.

“The Viv Ansanm coalition will use all its means to achieve the departure of the CPT,” Cherisier said Monday, using the acronym for the Transitional Presidential Council.

The council itself -- made up of unelected officials tasked with the difficult mandate of leading the country to its first elections since 2016 -- is facing its own internal disarray.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday met with the Presidents of Brazil, Chile, and Argentina in Rio de Janeiro and discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in various areas such as defence, energy, biofuels, and agriculture.

Modi, who arrived in Brazil on Sunday after concluding a two-day trip to Nigeria, held talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on the sidelines of the G20 Summit and complimented him on various efforts of Brazil during their G20 Presidency.

"We took stock of the full range of bilateral ties between our nations and reaffirmed our commitment to improving cooperation in sectors like energy, biofuels, defence, agriculture and more," Modi said in a post on X after talks with Lula.

The two leaders had a "productive meeting" during which they reviewed the complete spectrum of bilateral ties and agreed to advance cooperation in sectors such as defence, agriculture, biofuels, digital technology and more, the prime minister's office said.

While opening the bilateral meeting, President Lula told Prime Minister Modi that a lot of things that they have tried to do in their G20 have been inspired by the G20 Summit in India, the sources said.

He added that Brazil wanted to reach the level of efficiency in organizing the Summit that India had shown last year.

Brazil is hosting the 19th G20 Summit. India is part of the G20 Troika along with Brazil and South Africa.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that Prime Minister Modi thanked President Lula for successfully hosting the G20 Summit.

"PM assured India's full support to Brazil's initiative of ‘Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty’. Discussions focused on exploring opportunities for greater cooperation in renewable energy, biofuels, defence, agriculture, healthcare, and digital technology," he said in a post on X.

On Monday, Prime Minister Modi was warmly received by President Lula at the G20 Summit venue.

Alongside Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Joe Biden are among the leaders attending the Rio de Janeiro summit on November 18-19.

On Tuesday, Modi also met with Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font on the margins of the G20 Summit.

"India's ties with Chile are getting stronger across various sectors. Our talks focused on how to deepen relations in pharmaceuticals, technology, space, and more. It is gladdening to see Ayurveda gaining popularity in Chile. This is also a sector where ties can gain momentum," Modi posted on X.

On his part, President Boric said that they discussed the negotiations of the Trade Agreement between both countries (CEPA) and the new opportunities for public-private investment and trade promotion.

"We also discussed how to increase academic exchange, as well as increasing collaboration on cultural matters. India is one of the largest economies in the world, with great demographic and future potential, with whom we are working to strengthen ties, which we will deepen during our next official visit to that country next year," he said in a post on X.

Both sides reviewed India-Chile relations and discussed ways to expand cooperation in areas of pharmaceuticals, healthcare, technology, IT, railways, mining, space, renewable energy and defence, the MEA spokesperson said.

Modi also attended the session on ‘Sustainable Development and Energy Transition', where he underlined the importance of accelerating efforts to ensure a cleaner, more sustainable future for all, including through mainstreaming ‘Varanasi Principles on LiFE' and initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, One World-One Sun-One Grid and the Global Bio-Fuel Alliance.

Gaza's Hamas-run interior ministry said Monday (Nov 18) that at least 20 people were killed in an operation targeting "gangs" that looted trucks bringing aid into the war-torn territory threatened with famine.

The Guardian reported that gunmen attacked and looted around 100 trucks carrying desperately needed supplies in the war-hit zone. The attack was reported to be the biggest during 13 months of the Israel-Hamas war.&nbsp;

"More than 20 members of gangs involved in stealing aid trucks were killed in a security operation carried out by security forces in cooperation with tribal committees," the ministry said in a statement, according to AFP.

"Today's security operation will not be the last," it said, adding that "the phenomenon of truck thefts... has severely impacted society and led to signs of famine in southern Gaza".

The statement called the operation "the beginning of a broad security campaign that has been long planned and will expand to include everyone involved in the theft of aid trucks".

A source from the European hospital in the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis told AFP it had received the bodies of 15 people killed in connection with Monday's anti-looter operation.

An interior ministry source told AFP that 20 were killed in connection with the looting on Saturday of a World Food Programme convoy bringing aid into Gaza.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a press briefing in New York Monday that only 11 of the convoy's 109 trucks made it to the warehouse after entering through the Kerem Shalom crossing near the Egyptian border.

He said there was "severe damage to the trucks and in some cases, total loss of cargo on the trucks".

Dujarric called the incident the worst instance of looting in Gaza "in terms of volume".

He said the convoy had been initially planned for Sunday, but Israel's military told it "to depart on short notice via an alternate, unfamiliar route".

Israel, which imposed a total siege on the Hamas-ruled territory in the early stages of the war last year, often blames the inability of relief organisations to handle and distribute large quantities of aid.
