<p>A massive wedding scam was unearthed in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, according to media reports on Sunday (Feb 4). In Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district, more than 200 couples allegedly took part in fake marriages to receive benefits from the state government's Mass Marriage Scheme. Citing officials, a report by India Today said that 568 couples were believed to have been wedded at the event.</p>

<p>However, investigations later uncovered that more than 200 couples were paid to act as brides and grooms. This event took place on Jan 25. Speaking to India Today, a participant, aged 19, said he was offered $24 (Rs 2,000) to sit at the event. But the man said he was not paid.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A video of the event has gone viral on social media. The video showed several brides garlanding themselves while some grooms were covering up their faces as they sat down for marriage ceremonies.</p>

<p>On Jan 29, a probe committee was formed to investigate the matter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A report by the news agency PTI on Thursday said that many of the participants (fake actors) in the event were already married. Archana, a beneficiary of the state government's mass marriage scheme, was married in June last year. Apart from this, Ranjana Yadav and Suman Chauhan got married in March 2023, Priyanka got married in November 2023, Pooja got married a year ago, Sanju got married three years ago and Ramita got married in July 2023, the report said.</p>

<p>The probe committee said all of them were not eligible for the scheme. Ineligible applicants had applied illegally to get benefits under the scheme by hiding the facts, the committee added.</p>

<p>The PTI report further said that the Social Welfare department’s assistant development officer was negligent in examining the applications that led to this fraud.</p>

<h2><strong>15 arrested including govt officials</strong></h2>

<p>Around 15 people were arrested in this scandal including state government officials. Ballia District Magistrate (DM) Ravindra Kumar said on Thursday, "Two assistant development officers — Sunil Kumar Yadav and Bhanu Pratap of the Social Welfare department — have been arrested along with Ravindra Gupta, Alok Srivastav, Upendra Yadav, Deepak Chauhan, Mukesh Kumar Gupta, Ramji Chauhan, Santosh Yadav, Arjun Verma, Ramnath, Acchelal Verma, Dharmendra Yadav, Gulab Yadav and Sarabjeet Singh of the Social Welfare department."</p>

<p>Kumar said that among the arrested, Sunil Kumar Yadav was mentioned in the case registered and the names of 14 others have come to light during the investigation. Yadav has been suspended.</p>

<p>“Whether those involved in corruption in the matter are officers, employees, or anyone else, no one will be spared and strict action will be taken against them. Such action will be taken against those involved in corruption in the Mass Marriage Scheme that it will become an example for Ballia district,” Kumar told PTI.</p>

<h2><strong>The mass marriage scheme</strong></h2>

<p>The scheme was introduced by the Yogi Adityanath government in Oct 2017. "Under this scheme wedding programs are conducted according to the rituals practiced in various communities and religions. Another objective of the scheme is to abolish the unwanted and extravagance in wedding ceremonies," the social welfare department's website said.</p>

<p>The scheme also covers the re-marriage of widows, abandoned and divorced women.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A payment of $614 is made of which $421 goes to the woman, around $120 for purchasing matrimonial materials, and $73 for the event.&nbsp;</p>

Groundhog Day 2024: Ontario's Wiarton Willie predicts early spring; know more about tradition

<p>'To each, their own' is perhaps the mode of living for most of us and perhaps that's why when a trio of thieves decided to come together and plan a daring robbery to steal&nbsp;Pokemon cards, they may have thought&nbsp;there will be no judgement over&nbsp;what they thought was valuable. &nbsp;</p>

<p>And while they indeed committed a crime by stealing more than 35,000 Pokemon cards, the comic element of the heist was not lost and even the store that got robbed cracked jokes on social media.</p>

<p>The target was&nbsp;Tofu’s Trading, a trading card store in San Jose, California.</p>

<p>The thieves broke into the store at 2 am at night, carefully trying to stick to their ambitious plan, moving inside the store to search for Pokemon cards, and being clearly recorded in CCTV cameras inside the store. One of the theives also tries to crawl on the ground to avoid detection, right in front of a camera.</p>

<p>As per media reports, the theft took place on January 24 and the culprits managed to escape before the police arrived.</p>

<p>"We saw like three people breaking in through our side door, which was kind of ridiculous because there’s a fridge blocking it – so I don’t think it was a targeted attack at all,” said the store's co-owner and manager, Amy Simpson, as quoted by ABC7.</p>

<p>“I don’t think they were in for hobby necessarily because they didn’t know what to take.”</p>

<p>The burglars did steal more than 35,000 Pokemon cards&nbsp;but&nbsp;missed a special collection of cards which was valued more than the&nbsp;cards they stole.</p>

<p>The store owners were so amused with the entire incident that they made a video and put it on social media.</p>

<p>In a statement, the dentistry and oral surgery resident Alexandra Wright, D.V.M., who led Tyson's care team, detailed that there was an oral papillary squamous cell carcinoma, which he said is a "malignant cancer in dogs."</p>

<p>Wright, along with co-authors Dr&nbsp;Nadine Fiani, associate clinical professor and section chief, and Dr Santiago Peralta, associate professor in the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service, has published a report on this case in Frontiers in Veterinary Science.</p>

<p>Most of the puppy's lower left mandible had to be removed to remove the tumour. This, as per the veterinarians, meant Tyson would live a life without a fully functioning lower jaw.</p>

<p>The puppy's owners were sceptical about putting him through the surgery but chose to "give him a chance and continue with surgery."</p>

<p>"We had no idea his jaw would grow back!" they said.</p>

<p>In a tragic incident reported by the New York Post, a 46-year-old man from Brazil, Magno Sergio Gomes, lost his life after consuming poisonous pufferfish, known for its deadly venom. The fish was given to him as a gift by a friend, and the exact source remains unknown. Magno's sister, Myrian Gomes Lopes, shared that neither Magno nor his friend had previous experience cleaning pufferfish.</p>

<p>Magno and his friend, unfamiliar with handling such a fish, decided to cut it, remove the liver, boil it, and eat it with lemon juice.</p>

<p>Within an hour, both fell seriously ill. Myrian recounted, "Magno started to feel numb in his mouth," prompting him to drive himself to the hospital. It was there that the severity of the situation became apparent as "the numbness spread, and he went into cardiac arrest for 8 minutes."</p>

<p>The US Centre for Disease Control identified Magno's condition as resulting from tetrodotoxin, an extremely potent toxin primarily found in the liver and gonads of pufferfish and other marine species.</p>

<p>This substance, nearly 1,000 times more lethal than cyanide, serves as a predator deterrent for the blowfish.</p>

<p>There is no known antidote for this toxin, which interferes with nerve-to-muscle signals, leading to muscle paralysis and potential fatality.</p>

<p>Magno, facing the debilitating effects of tetrodotoxin, was placed on life support. Despite enduring 35 days in the hospital, the toxin's impact on his system proved fatal.</p>

<p>Delhi Police have busted a gang of thieves who&nbsp;masqueraded as deaf and mute orphans and stole valuables from vulnerable houses. The matter came to light after 19-year-old Venkatesh was arrested by police in a burglary case. On January 16, some unknown people entered a house in the Jungpura area of Nizamuddin and stole two Apple MacBooks, a Bose portable speaker and several other items.</p>

<p>The victim, a lawyer, subsequently filed a case with police under Sections 380 (committing theft in any building) and 454 (lurking, house-trespass or house-breaking in order to commit an offence punishable with imprisonment).</p>

<p>A team of police officers led by sub-inspectors Akash Tomar and Jitendra was formed to pursue the case. After investigating local CCTV footage, they managed to apprehend Venkatesh from Sarai Kale Khan in southeast Delhi. As per media reports, the items stolen in the January 16 burglary case were recovered from his residence, along with other items pertaining to several other cases.</p>

<p>Venkatesh told investigating officers that he and his associates would carry printed pamphlets implying that they are deaf and mute, and would seek financial assistance from unsuspecting people.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Japanese macaques are also called Japanese snow macaques or simply snow monkeys. They have opposable thumbs and are found mostly on Japanese islands&nbsp; of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Japanese macaques have human-like faces and cheek pouches for food storage. Their eyes are very expressive and their faces and bottoms become red in adulthood.&nbsp;</p>

The entire project was commissioned with a budget of $18,900 to the private sector and a promotion area was set up in the corner of the lobby of the airport.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Initially, a pair of cheap mannequins, rented at around $180 per day, were placed in the lobby. However, a few months later, the mannequins disappeared and the sex doll, dressed in an indigo-dyed summer kimono took its place.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Interestingly, the existence of the adult doll came to light in September last year only. Consequently, the prefectural assembly member Atsushi Fukawa requested a citizen's audit in November.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the Japanese news outlet <em>Mainichi</em>, a male official in his 40s in charge of the project instructed the contractor to purchase the sex doll to replace the mannequins. The said official visited a sex doll manufacturing and sales company in Osaka with other project stakeholders, including the contractor, to pick out the doll.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After Romeo’s team reviewed sonar data in December they found a startling image of what appears to be Earhart’s twin-engine Lockheed 10-E Electra.</p>

<p>Romeo’s team will further investigate the site to determine that it is in fact the long-lost aircraft. The team has been using a Kongsberg Discovery HUGIN 6000, which according to the company’s post on Instagram, is the most advanced unmanned underwater drone.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The underwater drone is manufactured by the Norwegian company Kongsberg. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the image of the suspected wreck was found 5,000 metres underwater.&nbsp;</p>

The attackers, while killing a member of the rival gang, also ended up fatally stabbing one of their own members. <p>As they attacked Charlie, one of the members accidentally stabbed 16-year-old Kearne Solank, one of their own members, in the shoulder. Kearne was later abandoned by the four attackers at a location one mile away from where Charlie was fatally attacked.</p>

<p>They left Kearne inside the car in Thamesmead. Two separate calls were made to 999 within six minutes of each other, with the two teenagers being reported dead.</p>

<p>The incident came as a result of an inter-gang rivalry between members of Thamesmead’s T-Block gang and rivals from Abbey Wood. The four teenagers were later charged with murdering two boys.</p>

<p>"According to our calculations, 10 out of the 16 species of land hermit crabs in the world use this type of shelter and it's been observed in all tropical regions of the Earth," Prof Szulkin explained.</p>

<p>However, it is unclear if these materials are even helpful for marine creatures.</p>

<p>"When I first saw these pictures, I felt it was heart-breaking," BBC Radio 4's Inside Science quoted Prof Szulkin as saying.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"At the same time, I think we really need to understand the fact that we are living in a different era and animals are making use of what is available to them," the professor added.</p>

<p>Notably, methane, a planet-warming gas, is 80 times worse over 20 years than carbon dioxide and reducing such emissions is key to not cross to limiting global temperature warming.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A newborn baby girl was found dead in a pub toilet in the United Kingdom. The police have launched an urgent search for the mother.</p>

<p>On Sunday (Jan 28), police found the body of the baby in the Three Horse Shoes in Oulton, Leeds. Detectives have urged the mother to come forward and seek medical help.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the West Yorkshire Police, someone at the pub made the "tragic" discovery when the place was packed with customers for its Carvery Sunday lunch at around 04:45 pm local time. The authorities immediately called the paramedics, who confirmed the baby was deceased at the scene, the Mirror UK reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>James Entwistle of the Major Enquiry Team said, "This is a tragic incident and we are urgently appealing for the mother of the baby girl to contact us or seek medical help as she has been through an extremely traumatic ordeal and could well need treatment herself."</p>

<p>"If the mother is comfortable speaking to the police then she can do so by calling 101 or she can use LiveChat online to talk to us remotely at Live Chat | West Yorkshire Police. Our enquiries into the incident remain ongoing today with NHS partners but our main priority remains the mother's welfare and safety," he added.&nbsp;</p>
