The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Wednesday (Jan 10) called for an "immediate" end to attacks being carried out by Yemen's Houthi rebels on the ships present in the Red Sea.

The resolution which was passed "demands that the Houthis immediately cease all such attacks, which impede global commerce and undermine navigational rights and freedoms as well as regional peace and security." The intensified attacks by Houthi rebels have forced shipping companies to bypass the route and divert around South Africa's Cape of Good Hope, which has increased the time and cost being spent on their journey.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the missiles originated from territory controlled by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

The rebels, who claim to be targeting Israel and Israeli-linked vessels, have been launching attacks on vessels in the crucial Red Sea shipping lane, threatening up to 12 percent of global trade.

The USS Gravely and USS Laboon, both destroyers, promptly answered the distress call from the Maersk Hangzhou. While assisting the container ship, the USS Gravely successfully intercepted the incoming missiles.

This situation has sparked outrage in the Middle East and fueled attacks by armed groups across the region opposed to Israel. American destroyer thwarts Yemeni missile attack on Red Sea shipping

A US warship on Thursday (Dec 28) shot down a drone and an anti-ship ballistic projectile fired by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels, the US military said in a statement.

"The USS Mason (DDG 87) shot down one drone and one anti-ship ballistic missile in the Southern Red Sea that were fired by the Huthis," US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement, referring to a guided-missile destroyer.

"There was no damage to any of the 18 ships in the area or reported injuries," CENTCOM said, adding that it was the 22nd attempted attack on international shipping by the Huthis since mid-October.

The Houthi rebels have recently targeted vessels repeatedly in the Red Sea shipping lane amid the Israel-Hamas war in support of the Palestinians in the conflict-torn Gaza Strip.

The attacks are threatening a transit route that carries up to 12 per cent of global trade, pushing the United States to deploy a multinational naval task force earlier this month to shield Red Sea shipping.

The Treasury Department, in addition to the US military action, announced sanctions against a network believed to be involved in financing the Houthi attacks on Thursday (Dec 28).

The Treasury in a statement said that it had imposed sanctions against the chief of the Currency Exchangers Association in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, along with three exchanges in Yemen and Turkey who were responsible for "facilitating the flow of Iranian financial assistance" to the Houthis.

In a major development from Yemen, the warring parties in the long-running conflict in the Middle Eastern country committed to a new ceasefire and also agreed to engage in a UN-led peace process that would put an end to the fighting, the UN special envoy for Yemen released a statement saying on Saturday (Dec 23).

The envoy, Hans Grundberg, "welcomes the parties' commitment to a set of measures to implement a nation-wide ceasefire, improve living conditions in Yemen, and engage in preparations for the resumption of an inclusive political process under UN auspices," he said in a statement.

The decision was announced after a series of meetings with the parties in Saudi Arabia and Oman.

Yemen has been under the grip of the conflict since Iran-backed Houthis seized control of the capital Sanaa in the year 2014, which further triggered a Saudi-led military intervention in support of the beleaguered government the following year.

Last year, the United Nations brokered a ceasefire deal that came into effect in the month of April which further brought a sharp reduction in hostilities. The truce deal expired in October last year, though fighting largely remains on hold.

Grundberg will now "engage with the parties to establish a roadmap under UN auspices" that includes these commitments.

"Yemenis are watching and waiting for this new opportunity to provide for tangible results and progress towards lasting peace," Grundberg said.

"The parties have taken a significant step. Their commitments are, first and foremost, an obligation to the Yemeni people."

The development comes in the midst of a series of attacks by Houthi rebels targeting key shipping lanes in the Red Sea in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The Houthis have pledged to attack Israel-linked vessels or ships heading to Israeli ports unless an end is brought to the Israel-Hamas war that started on Oct 7.

As per the Pentagon, they have launched more than 100 drone and missile attacks, targeting 10 merchant vessels involving more than 35 different countries.
