Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to attend the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, which also marks 25 years of the grouping.

PM Modi’s key priorities at the summit are expected to include security, counterterrorism, connectivity and strengthening India’s engagement with the Central Asian region.

The SCO Summit brings together major regional leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. PM Modi is also scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with President Putin on the sidelines of the summit.

India-Russia relations will be closely watched during the meeting, with defence, trade and energy among the key areas of cooperation. Bilateral trade has grown significantly, driven largely by India’s imports of Russian energy, while New Delhi is also seeking more balanced trade and greater exports to Russia.

Ukraine's former defense minister Fedorov has taken on a new international defense role just weeks after his dramatic dismissal from Kyiv's government triggered protests across the country.

Fedorov has accepted a position as defense innovation adviser to Italy's Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, where he will advise on technologies shaping modern warfare. His work will reportedly focus on autonomous systems, air defense and defense-sector innovation.

Italy's Defense Ministry described the appointment as an important opportunity, with Fedorov's experience in military technology and innovation expected to contribute to Italy's response to emerging security challenges.

Fedorov will remain based in Kyiv while carrying out his new responsibilities.

The appointment comes after a major political fallout in Ukraine. Fedorov was dismissed as defense minister in July amid reported tensions with Ukraine's military leadership. His removal sparked protests, with supporters demanding that he be reinstated.

Russia has launched another major wave of drone attacks across Ukraine, with strikes reported in the Kyiv region, Zaporizhzhia and other areas as the Kremlin's aerial campaign intensifies.

In the Kyiv region, Ukrainian authorities reported casualties and extensive damage to warehouses, homes, apartment buildings and vehicles. One warehouse worker said two Shahed drones struck the facility, with a second drone reportedly hitting after emergency crews arrived. Ukrainian officials described the incident as a possible double-tap attack targeting first responders.

Air raid sirens sounded repeatedly across Kyiv as authorities warned residents about worsening air quality following the attacks.

In Zaporizhzhia, Russian drones reportedly struck a major shopping and home-improvement complex, triggering a massive fire that spread across thousands of square meters. Several people were reportedly injured, while rescue operations faced the threat of further attacks.

The latest strikes are part of a wider Russian campaign targeting Ukrainian logistics, warehouses, distribution facilities and other infrastructure.

On the eastern front, Ukrainian forces say Russian troops are positioned just several kilometres away from key defensive areas around the Donbas fortress belt, increasing pressure on the battlefield.

Russia has also claimed that its air defenses intercepted or destroyed 512 Ukrainian drones across multiple Russian regions, Crimea and the Black Sea. Russian-installed authorities in Sevastopol also reported damage to a residential building and injuries.

In today's top world headlines, Russia launched another intense barrage of ballistic missiles and drones targeting Kyiv, killing at least nine people and injuring dozens, according to Ukrainian authorities.

In Colombia, at least 11 people were injured after a truck packed with explosives detonated near a police station in Cúcuta, close to the Venezuelan border, just days before the inauguration of the country's president-elect.

Meanwhile, thousands of Iranian Shia pilgrims continue their annual Arbaeen pilgrimage through Iraq toward the holy city of Karbala, one of the world's largest religious gatherings.

In Italy, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake near Naples injured 26 people, damaged buildings, and forced hundreds to evacuate as aftershocks raised fresh concerns.

The United States has also issued security alerts through its embassies across several Middle Eastern capitals, urging American citizens to remain vigilant and be prepared for possible regional escalation.

At the same time, wildfires fueled by strong winds continue to spread across Greece, including areas near Athens, while dangerous fire conditions persist in Spain and France, prompting emergency evacuations and large-scale firefighting operations.
