Just a day after Iran was criticised for lack of co-operation, Western countries on Friday (November 18) urged Iran to take "essential and urgent" action on issues raised by United Nations' nuclear watchdog. On Thursday, Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency's board of governors passed a resolution that targetted Iran.&nbsp;

USA and world powers struck a nuclear deal with Iran in 2015, but former US president Donald Trump took the US out of the deal. &nbsp;Talks are on to restore the deal but an impasse has been reached over the issue of undeclared Uranium particles.

"The board has sent a clear message that it is essential and urgent that Iran fulfils its (non-proliferation treaty)-required safeguards obligations," said France, Germany, Britain and the United States in a joint statement.

The nations urged Iran to "take the actions specified without delay".

The non-proliferation treaty is an international agreement aimed at preventing the spread of atomic weapons.

The same countries had brought the resolution at the IAEA, which was the second of its kind within six months regarding a lack of "technically credible" answers provided by Iran.

The watchdog has been pressing Iran to explain the presence of undeclared man-made uranium found at three sites, calling for "access to locations and material" as well as the collection of samples.

Western powers accuse Iran of seeking to build nuclear weapons, something that Tehran has always denied.

In Friday's statement, the Western powers welcomed the latest resolution and urged Iran to explain the presence of the particles.

"We hope Iran takes this opportunity to cooperate with the IAEA in good faith toward closing these outstanding matters," it said.

West asks Iran to cooperate with IAEA

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Saturday that the Western world was well on its way to a "joint victory" over Russia. His remarks came as Ukrainian forces recaptured Kherson after Russian forces withdrew. Kuleba hailed West's military aid for making recapture of Kherson possible.

The Ukrainian national anthem rang out in Kherson after Moscow pulled its forces out of the city -- the first major urban hub to fall after President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion in February.

"There were very few who believed that Ukraine would survive," Kuleba said as he met US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the sidelines of a Southeast Asian summit in Cambodia.

"It's only together that we will be able to prevail and to kick Russia out of Ukraine. We are on the way," Kuleba said.

"This is coming, and our victory will be our joint victory -- a victory of all peace-loving nations across the world."

Kuleba said that Ukrainians were celebrating liberation of Kherson and were shedding "tears of gratitude" for US for billions of dollars in military aid.

"We will always be grateful for everything President (Joe) Biden and the people of America, irrespective of their domestic political preferences, have done to make this happen," Kuleba said, days after US congressional elections that saw no significant boost to far-right critics of support to Ukraine.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken hailed the "remarkable courage" of Ukraine's military and people and vowed that US support "will continue for as long as it takes" to defeat Russia.

Earlier, Kuleba also thanked Australia for its support -- $440 million of mostly military assistance -- during a meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The West is now realising that: the war will drag on for longer than foreseen; the US and Europe cannot keep boosting President Volodymyr Zelensky’s regime with a steady flow of readily usable weapons; Russia, far from being beaten by sanctions, has reaped economic gains in the process; and, above all, weaponising resources is a game that both sides can play. &nbsp;

To take the last point first, OPEC+, which is meeting today to discuss an output cut to prop up oil prices, has proved that it is no pushover. Petroleum prices have acquired a new urgency in the wake of Russia’s decision last week to shut down the Nordstream gas pipeline to Germany. Moscow said that this is being done to carry out repairs although it is, doubtless, a move to hit back at the G7 bloc that wants to impose a price cap on Russian oil imports. Thus, the G7 may not succeed in reducing Russia’s oil revenues.&nbsp;

Instead, Russia escalating the face-off over gas and oil exports will worsen winter shortages in Europe, thereby forcing the Continent to import fuel at much higher prices and still ration it.&nbsp;

Europe has accused Russia of weaponising energy supplies. The accusation cannot but draw attention to the US and Europe weaponising not only foreign exchange reserves and assets of Russia and other countries such as Afghanistan but also subverting the international banking system SWIFT to serve their military objectives.&nbsp;

The other truths are brought home by none less than US President Joe Biden, who led the West into this proxy war against Russia in the name of Ukraine’s independence. Speaking on Ukraine’s Independence Day last week, Biden did not mention Zelensky or his military campaign against Russia. He held out no promise of any support to Ukraine’s war effort. The recently announced arms worth $2.98 billion were for Ukraine to “continue to defend itself over the long term”.&nbsp;

As Washington distances itself from Kyiv, support for Ukraine is also drying up in Europe, particularly in Germany, France and Italy. These countries, including a refugee-weary Poland, are no longer keen to send weapons to Ukraine or continue the war against Russia. The anti-war protests in Germany underscore the extent of public and intra-party pressure that Chancellor Olaf Scholz is facing.&nbsp;

Ukraine is losing support outside the West, too, with less than a third of the UN’s 193 members willing to back any resolution condemning Russia. &nbsp;

The tide of world opinion is turning against Ukraine and its US-led patrons.&nbsp;
