Pakistan is gearing up its civil defence amid rising tension on the border and the threat of war to tackle any exigency if an armed conflict begins.
Talib Hussain, the civil defence officer in Rawalpindi, told Dawn that the department has activated its 14 posts in the garrison city due to rising tensions and the growing threat of military action in some form from across the border.
Moreover, all the leaves of the employees from the bomb disposal unit have been cancelled, and they have been deputed to the civil defence offices to work in two shifts.
The officer further said that several volunteers are being trained to overcome the shortage of staff. “Awareness drives have been started, and the civil defence volunteers are being trained in first aid, fire extinguishing, and other rescue work,” the officer added.

Due diligence is being followed in the recruitment and training of the volunteers, and the post warden has been asked to get a copy of the identity card, a police verification certificate, and a photograph from them.

Pakistan is playing with fire days after the terror attack in Kashmir left 26 dead islamabad is flexing its military muscle now and they're doing that with missile tests and rhetoric to mask its fatal vulnerabilities.

Why Pakistan's army can't handle a real war?

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday directed several states to start emergency preparedness drills and security mock drills on Wednesday (May 7) for “effective civil defence in the event of a hostile attack” amid tensions between India and Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
However, security preparations and training are already underway in Jammu and Kashmir.

In Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir, teachers of a middle school in Salotri village near the Line of Control (LoC) are training students to protect themselves during cross-border shelling—part of safety drills amid frequent ceasefire violations by Pakistan. The students learn to take cover under desks and evacuate to bunkers once the firing subsides. With tensions persisting along the LoC, authorities stress the need for preparedness and safety in vulnerable border areas.
The drills are important as the present generation has never seen a war. The Kargil conflict was localised to J&K heights.

PM Modi meets top officials

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has held several high-profile meetings with top government officials and military leaders since vowing to avenge the killing of 26 unarmed civilians in the worst-ever attack in Jammu and Kashmir since the 2019 Pulwama incident. PM Modi met Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh on Monday after having met Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh a day earlier. The PM has already said that those involved in carrying out and plotting the terror attack will get a punishment they cannot imagine.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has also sent enough food, water, and health supplies to villages along the line of control to last for two months and closed all religious seminaries in the region in fear of Indian strikes.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has begun issuing call-up orders for tens of thousands of reservists as it prepares to significantly expand its military operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

While the IDF did not confirm specific numbers, as per an AFP report, relatives of journalists from the news agency were among those receiving orders.
These reinforcements, as per a Times of Israel report, will primarily replace active-duty soldiers stationed in Lebanon, Syria and the occupied West Bank, freeing them up for redeployment to Gaza. The IDF said the mobilisation was being carried out because of "practical and operational interests" and is part of a planned staged offensive to escalate pressure on Hamas.

Since October 7, when Hamas launched a surprise assault that killed about 1,200 people and led to the abduction of 251 hostages, the IDF has reported killing around 21,600 Hamas fighters, including 1,600 militants inside Israel. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza claims over 52,400 Palestinians have been killed, though these figures are unverified and do not distinguish between civilians and combatants.
As of now, 59 hostages remain in Gaza, including the body of a soldier killed in the 2014 war.
