Anak Krakatau volcano erupted in Indonesia, sending volcanic ash across parts of western Indonesia and disrupting flights at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

The eruption occurred in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra. Indonesia’s geological authorities reported renewed volcanic activity, while no casualties or evacuation orders were reported.

Authorities warned residents and visitors to stay at least three kilometres away from the volcano’s active crater.

Volcanic ash spread across parts of Jakarta, Banten, West Java and Lampung. Satellite imagery identified two major ash clouds, with one plume reaching around 20,000 feet and another rising to approximately 50,000 feet.

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport temporarily suspended flight operations following the eruption. The disruption affected around 209 flight movements and approximately 22,800 passengers, with travellers seeking refunds and collecting checked baggage as cancellations mounted.

<p>No incidents of injuries or damage were reported, however, “buildings are now being examined for potential damage, with special attention paid to social facilities,” TASS reported.</p>

<p>According to lead researcher Josh Crozier, a geologist at Stanford University, this unusual eruptive style likely worsened the impact of the 2018 lava flow, which devastated over 600 properties.</p>

<p>The eruptions sometimes up to 30 feet high were uncommon because explosive eruptions are typically driven by either rising molten rock -- magma -- or by expanding steam from magma heating underground water.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The stomp-rocket toy mechanism geologists believe caused the 2018 eruptions likely stemmed from the collapse of the magma reservoir, which suddenly increased the pressure of gas trapped in the chamber and led to an explosive eruption.</p>

<p>Geologist Josh Crozier explains that a combination of seismic and geodetic instruments captured a significant and sudden swelling of the ground near the magma chamber. Additionally, infrasound readings, which track low-frequency sounds, indicated a decrease in air pressure.</p>

<p>Similar eruptions at Kilauea could occur in the future, but it would be "highly unlikely" in the next decade, Crozier said.</p>

<p>Magma, as per the report, is making its way through the Earth's upper crust from a depth of at least 10 kilometres (6.21 miles). Additionally, ground rising, also known as inflation, has been observed in the nearby area of Svartsengi, where a geothermal plant that provides electricity and water to 30,000 people on the peninsula is located.</p>

<p>The inflation&nbsp;as per geophysicist Benedikt Ofeigsson suggests that "all the magma coming from this depth doesn't have the capacity to go straight to the surface (and) is partly stored in this magma storage in Svartsengi."</p>

<p>It said that La Cumbre blew a gas cloud about three kilometres into the air, which was dispersed by the wind without passing over other islands with human settlements, such as the neighbouring Isabela.</p>

<p>La Cumbre has previously erupted three times — in 2017, 2018 and 2020. It stands 1,463 metres (4,799.87 feet) high and has the highest eruption rate among all the volcanoes in the archipelago.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Nov 1 eruption of the Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano was predicted by the Russian authorities when they observed some increased activity at the volcano on Oct 30. As per the authorities, strombolian-type eruptions have been ongoing at the volcano since Oct 11, including several explosive eruptions around Oct 27-30.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Currently, no further eruptions are predicted at the volcano but authorities have asked residents to avoid approaching the eruption site.</p>

<p>Colombia's ministry of mines in a statement said that there has recently been a "significant increase in seismic activity," for the Nevado del Ruiz volcano.&nbsp;</p>

<p>AFP reports that Colombia's SGC geological service has warned of a "probable eruption within days or weeks."</p>

<p>The agency said that another eruption was "a probability for which authorities must be prepared," and urged the population to remain calm and to follow warnings and updates.</p>

<p>Nevado del Ruiz volcano is a 17,400-foot (5,300-meter) colossus volcano in Western Columbia. Its last eruption on November 13, 1985,&nbsp;is considered one of the worst natural disasters in Colombian history and also one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century. The heat from the 1985 eruption melted the snow that caps mountains in surrounding areas; triggering a mudslide which as per AFP "swallowed" the town of Armero and killed around half of its population of 50,000.</p>
