The first game of the Chess World Cup 2023 final between Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa of India and Magnus Carlsen of Norway ended in a draw on Tuesday (Aug&nbsp;22). As a result, the duo will now meet again on Wednesday in game two to decide the winner of the ongoing Chess World Cup final in Baku. The draw occurred after 35 moves as the Indian will now turn to black pieces for the second game having started with white on Tuesday.

<h2>Early dominance from Praggnanandhaa</h2>

After starting with white pieces, 18-year-old Praggnanandhaa established an early dominance as he had an advantage of 20 minutes over veteran Carlsen during the ninth move of the contest. Praggnanandhaa’s offensive push forced Carlsen to take his time before he stormed back into the contest. It took over 15 minutes for the Norwegian Grandmaster to push for the 13th move in the game. It took him 27 minutes to think and deliver the 13th move to stop Praggnanandhaa from gaining any advantage.

However, precise thinking and quickfire moves from the five-time World Champion saw his emphatic return in the game. The Indian was put on the back foot as he took time to push for further moves. With time no longer his friend, Praggnanandhaa’s early time advantage was wiped out as Carlsen started to dominate during the final few moves.

However, with the contest reaching nowhere, both Grandmasters decided to shake hands and move to game two. It took 35 moves for both to come to the conclusion of a draw.

"It'll be a fight. He'll definitely push very hard. I'll try to rest and come fresh, I think that's the best I can do,” Praggnanandhaa said after game one.

"Normally, I would just probably have a bit of an advantage having a rest day while he had to play a tough tiebreak yesterday, but I've been in a pretty rough shape the last couple of days. I got some food poisoning after the game against Abasov. I haven't been able to eat for the last two days. This also meant that I was really calm cause I had no energy to be nervous,” said Carlsen after conclusion of the contest.

The duo will meet again on Wednesday in the second game with Carlsen set to start with white pieces.

The Prodigy has dethroned the master as 17-year-old Dommaraju Gukesh has ended the 36-year reign of five-time world champion Vishwanathan Anand as India's number-one ranked player in the Fide ratings. Now Gukesh achieved this feat after outclassing the home favourite Anand.

"2022 has been an extraordinary year for Indian Chess, as the country has 77 Grandmasters, a lot of whom are from Chennai" said Indian Chess Legend Vishwanathan Anand. To earn the Grandmaster title, one has to secure three Grandmaster norms and surpass 2500 ELO points marks. Anand recalled how&nbsp;India hosted 1700 top players from across 185 nations, as part of the 44th&nbsp;FIDE International Chess Olympiad held in Chennai, earlier this year. Anand was speaking at an event organized by the Tamil Nadu Government, where it was announced that corporates and individual donors could adopt and maintain Government-run schools, as part of the "Namma School"(Our School) initiative.&nbsp;

As the brand ambassador for the cause, Anand said that building confidence among school students requires enormous investment of providing education, exposure, nutritious meals, sports activities, infrastructure etc. He said that the Government alone cannot develop schools on its own and urged alumni of Government schools and global diaspora to join hands and make a difference. "As in Chess, let our youth excel in every walk of life" Anand said from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India's Chess capital.&nbsp;

According to the Tamil Nadu Government, donors and companies willing to donate to Government schools can access a state-wide database that covers nearly 38,000 schools. Donors can either adopt the entire school or take care of specific needs such as computers, infrastructure, furniture etc, as per the requirements of the school, highlighted in the database. They said that the before and after pictures of the work carried out with donor funds would also be updated on the 'Namma School' portal.&nbsp;

On the occasion of the launch of this initiative, leading corporates and individuals from Tamil Nadu donated more than Rs.50cr or $6.04million. The initiative was launched by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and senior Government officials.

"Is that even a question?" replied Aamir Khan on being asked if he would be interested in playing the role of Anand in the film. 
 
"It would not only be an honour and pleasure to play Vishy but it would also be highly exciting to get into his mind. Whenever I am playing a character, I try to understand the person`s mind. With Vishy being a real person, I would spend a lot of time with him to understand his mind and how his mind works. I would also understand from his wife and his family how his mind works. And hopefully, I will surprise Vishy when I play him on screen. If and when that happens, I would look forward to that," added Aamir. 
 
But what topped the affirmation of interest from Aamir on the role, and left everyone in splits was Anand`s reply when he said, "And I promise I wouldn`t put you in a position where you have to gain weight for your role." 
 
The Vishwanathan Anand biopic is in the advanced stages of scripting and fans are eagerly waiting to see if Aamir Khan will join the colossal combination of Aanand L Rai and Mahaveer Jain for the film.

Vishwanathan Anand and ace women’s player Koneru Humpy on Monday termed India’s maiden gold medal in the Chess Olympiad as “magical moment” which has the ability to turn the fortunes for chess in India.&nbsp;

The entire Indian contingent met together for the first time since the Online Chess Olympiad win, in virtual press conference, as everyone expressed their delight on scripting history and bringing the gold home for India.

"The tournament went like a dream for me. A special gold for me. A special moment for youngsters. Winning the gold is simply a magical moment," Anad told reporters during an online media interaction, along with all the other 11 members of the Indian team.

"I hope this will be the start of many things for India," Anand said of the country's first gold medal in the Chess Olympiad.

India had previously won a bronze in the men’s event of the 2014 edition, which was country’s best finish before the achievement in 2020 Online Chess Olympiad. Anand continued as he said this gold will be special to his collection.&nbsp;

"The Olympiad win is very special...A very special medal I will add to my collection," he added.

Anand, who has been an inspiration for millions, lauded the young players in the team as he said that it proved the depth of Indian chess while adding that this win might push government to look at chess as they did a years ago.&nbsp;

"I hope this result will have a positive impact and they (government) will look at chess they did years ago.

"Several years ago, they had recognised that this is one of the sports where we do incredibly well. I hope we will once again start coming in for Arjuna and Dronacharya awards," he added.

Whereas, the world rapid champion, Humpy described the win as golden moment for Indian chess while saying that teamwork was key to the historic win.&nbsp;

"Really a special and golden moment for Indian chess. Talented youngsters like Nihal Sarin, R Praggnanandhaa, Vantika..did well. Great teamwork did it for us. We had an advantage of having a mixed team," she said.

On playing online, she said, "I never had an idea of playing online chess. I am comfortable playing over the board. The pandemic has forced us to play online. It is a different experience. Slowly, getting used to it," she added.

Team captain Vidit Gujrathi said the victory was possible due to the great work by all players.

"All the players did a great job which brought us the gold medal. It was a great experience to work with Anand," he said.
