The chief minister made the announcement&nbsp;at the International Diplomatic Alliance Meet and Curtain Raiser for Andhra Pradesh Global Investors Summit 2023 organised in New Delhi.&nbsp;

The announcement of a new capital comes nine years after Telangana&nbsp;state was carved out of Andhra and Hyderabad city was assigned as its capital.&nbsp;

"Here I am to invite you to Visakhapatnam which is going to be our capital in the days to come. I myself would also be shifting over to Visakhapatnam in the months to come as well," he told the investors at the meeting.&nbsp;

Amaravati as a state capital had been in contention for a long ever since the formation of Telangana. In 2015, the then CM N Chandrababu Naidu-led government acquired over 33,000 acres of land from farmers to develop Amaravati as the capital of the state.&nbsp;

But after Jagan Mohan Reddy got elected in 2019, he decided to develop three state capitals—Visakhapatnam as the executive capital, Amaravati as the legislative capital and Kurnool as the judicial capital, following which he passed appropriate legislation.&nbsp;

Last year in November, the state government passed a bill in the assembly in November, repealing the controversial AP Decentralisation and Inclusive Development of All Regions Act, 2020, which was intended to establish three capitals for the state.&nbsp;

Without putting any timeframe, Jagan, speaking on the floor of the assembly said the government would come out with a "comprehensive, complete and better" bill after plugging loopholes in the previous version.&nbsp;

In March last year, the Andhra Pradesh High Court ruled against the three capitals and directed the government to develop Amaravati as the state capital as envisaged.&nbsp;

The court on March 3, 2022, said the state legislature lacked the competence to make any legislation for shifting, bifurcating or trifurcating the capital.&nbsp;

The state government then filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the High Court Order.&nbsp;

The initial reports have found out that a technical glitch in the refrigeration unit attached to the two styrene tanks at a chemical plant caused this vapour leak. The leak has affected more than 1,000 people in the five surrounding villages within a three kilometre radius.

“The gas leak situation is now under control and we are exploring all ways to provide speedy treatment for those who suffer from inhaling the leaked gas,”&nbsp;LG Polymers said in a statement.&nbsp;

The South Korea-based company has assured that the situation is under control and a detailed investigation is being conducted on the extent of physical and monetary damage.However, the number of casualties are expected to increase as some victims are fighting for their lives in the hospitals.

“There is gas leakage identified in LG Polymers in Gopalapatnam. Requesting citizens around these locations not to come out of their houses for the sake of safety precautions," the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation tweeted on Thursday.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too, chaired a meeting at 11am on Thursday to get a detailed report on the tragedy.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) took control of the situation in the early hours, and has reported that the gas leak has been contained.

A 35-member women police team 'Sthree Shakthi'&nbsp;was launched in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.&nbsp;

The 35-member team has woman ASIs, head constables, police constables and home guards. The team has been provided 25 vehicles, including two four-wheelers.

"It is a 35 members team. We have started with 25 vehicles, 5 four wheelers and rest are motorcycles and scooters. This is mainly for the protection of women. The women-related issue can be informed to the team and then they will take action accordingly. From drivers to police personnel, everyone is a woman," said Andhra Pradesh DGP AP Thakur.&nbsp;

"In Visakhapatnam, there are a number of educational institutions and workplaces where women are working in large numbers. Our prime concern is to ensure safety to women," he said.&nbsp;

The initiative was taken to provide security to women and girls. All the police constables were imparted training in the car driving,&nbsp;&nbsp;swimming, communication skills and self-defence for one month.

They all will be deployed on important junctions of the city. They will handle women-related issues including eve-teasers and trouble-mongers.&nbsp;

The Shakthi police will don a blue colour shirt and khaki colour pant as uniform.

Singapore Navy officers visit INS Sahyadri, Shakti at Vishakapatnam

Yuvajana Sramika Rythu (YSR) Congress Party chief Jagan Mohan Reddy was stabbed on his arm by an unidentified assailant at Vishakhapatnam Airport on Thursday.

It was reported that Reddy was safe and has been taken to a nearby hospital for the treatment of the wound he has received in the attack.

The attacker has been taken into custody immediately. The YSRCP chief was on his way to Hyderabad.

As per the new BCCI constitution, 90 per cent tickets of the total capacity of the stadium must be put on public sale, which effectively leaves 10 per cent of complimentary tickets left with state units.

In this case, the Holkar stadium has the capacity to accommodate 27,000 fans and MPCA was left with 2700 complimentary tickets.

The BCCI also demands its share of free passes for its sponsors and thus the bone of contention.

The clamour for free passes during international games has always been an issue with BCCI affiliated units.

The match will now be held at the picturesque ACA-VDCA (Andhra Cricket Association/Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association) ground, set on the outskirts of the port city amidst scenic hills.

Araku MLA Kidari Sarveswara Rao and former Araku MLA Siveri Soma were on Sunday shot dead in Andhra Pradesh's Vishakapatnam district.&nbsp;

Both men belonged to the TDP.&nbsp;One of the MLA's aides also died in the attack.

Visakhapatnam DIG Srikanth told ANI that 20 Maoists took part in the attack.&nbsp;

"We're trying to ascertain facts from the PSOs. As per preliminary information, 20 Maoists were there with weapons and there may be some more in the neighbouring vicinity and they came along with the villagers," said Srikanth.&nbsp;

"Around 20 members from CPI Maoist attacked them at around 12 pm, snatched the weapons from the PSOs, and later fired at them. Both died on the spot. Reason behind attack yet to be ascertained," Srikanth added.&nbsp;

News reports said the Maoists, accompanied by local villagers, had stopped Rao and Soma, and had talked to them about mining in the region. The reports said the mining is not popular with the people.&nbsp;

Then, the Maoists shot the two politicians.&nbsp;

The Maoists have for a long time reportedly warned that they might attack the MLA.

Kidari Sarveswara Rao was elected as an MLA for the first time in 2014 on a YSR Congress ticket. He later joined the ruling Telugu Desam Party.

The YSR Congress‘ petition for his disqualification is pending with the Andhra Pradesh assembly speaker.
