In response to UK home secretary Suella Braverman's assertion that the Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP) had not "worked very well," India pointed out that it had taken the initiative in all cases brought to it under the pact.

The Indian High Commission in the UK stated that India is waiting for "demonstrable progress" on some of the commitments made by the UK government under the MMP, which was signed last year, in response to a&nbsp;PTI inquiry about Braverman's interview in The Spectator&nbsp;that labelled Indians as the "largest group of people who overstay" their visas in the UK.

"As part of our wider discussions under Migration and Mobility, the Government of India is committed to working with the UK government to facilitate the return of Indian citizens who have overstayed their visa period here in the UK," the High Commission of India statement said on Thursday.

"As per the data shared with the home office, as of date, action has been initiated on all of the cases referred to the High Commission. Further, the UK has also undertaken to fulfil certain commitments as part of the Migration and Mobility Protocol, on which we await demonstrable progress," it said.

The High Commission underlined that any future agreements would be advantageous to both parties in response to Braverman's contentious remarks about having "reservations" over visas on the planned Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that is currently being negotiated between the two sides.

"While certain issues pertaining to Mobility and Migration are currently under discussion as part of these negotiations, any comment on these matters may not be appropriate given that the negotiations are underway, and that any arrangement will include issues of interest to both sides," the High Commission said.

The UK home secretary, who is of Indian descent, assumed office last month.&nbsp;Braverman&nbsp; said she had "concerns" about the FTA with India because she feared what she called a "open borders" migration policy.

Braverman's claim that the MMP has not performed as expected is taken as a clear sign that she will most likely refuse to receive Cabinet approval for any visa waivers for India as part of an FTA.

This would put her in conflict with Liz Truss, the British Prime Minister, who is eager to meet the Diwali target for an FTA with<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/he-has-potential-of-yuvraj-singh-to-hit-six-sixes-dale-steyn-lauds-sanju-samson-after-lucknow-odi-523252"> India </a>as one of her signature trade agreements since assuming office. This year, Diwali falls on October 24.

On the Indian side, any trade agreement must take into account how easy it is for professionals and students to move around.

Germany eases visa restrictions for Putin critics classified as 'undesirable' in Russia

New&nbsp;Zealand&nbsp;will offer&nbsp;4,000&nbsp;special&nbsp;visas&nbsp;to&nbsp;refugees&nbsp;fleeing the Russian invasion of&nbsp;Ukraine&nbsp;if they have family in the southern hemisphere nation, its government said Tuesday.

Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi said it was&nbsp;New&nbsp;Zealand's largest special visa category in decades in support of an international aid effort.

Over 2.8 million people have fled&nbsp;Ukraine&nbsp;since Russia invaded on February 24, according to UN estimates.

For one year, the estimated 1,600 Ukrainian-born citizens and residents in&nbsp;New&nbsp;Zealand&nbsp;will be allowed to sponsor family members for the special visa, under which they will be allowed to work.

Relatives included in the scheme include parents, grandparents and their adult siblings or adult children and their immediate family who have fled&nbsp;Ukraine.

As mandated by the US Congress, the US can issue a maximum of 65,000 H-1B visa regular cap and another 20,000 H-1B visa US advanced degree exemption categories every year.&nbsp;

US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) which screens all such applications every year on Monday announced that it has received a sufficient number of petitions needed to reach the congressionally mandated 65,000 H-1B visa regular cap and the 20,000 H-1B visa US advanced degree exemption, known as the master's cap, for fiscal year (FY) 2022.&nbsp;

"We have completed sending non-selection notifications to registrants' online accounts. The status for registrations properly submitted for the FY 2022 H-1B numerical allocations, but that were not selected, will now show: Not Selected: Not selected ? not eligible to file an H-1B cap petition based on this registration,"&nbsp;it said.&nbsp;

The USCIS will continue to accept and process petitions that are otherwise exempt from the cap, it said.

"Petitions filed for current H-1B workers who have been counted previously against the cap, and who still retain their cap number, are exempt from the FY 2022 H-1B cap,"&nbsp;said the federal agency.

The Tier 1 (investor) visa offered residency to those investing £2m or more in the UK.&nbsp;It also allowed&nbsp;their families to join them.

Holders of these visas can then apply for permanent residency in the UK, at a speed depending on how much they invest.

But the UK government decided to close down the residency scheme saying that it “failed to deliver for the UK people and gave opportunities for corrupt elites to access the UK”.

“I have zero tolerance for abuse of our immigration system. Under my new plan for Immigration, I want to ensure the British people have confidence in the system, including stopping corrupt elites who threaten our national security and push dirty money around our cities,” British Home Secretary Priti Patel said on Thursday.

“Closing this route is just the start of our renewed crackdown on fraud and illicit finance,” she added.

Patel said it was just the start of their government’s action plan against fraud, and that an Economic Crime Bill is in the offing that “will crack down on people abusing our financial institutions and better protect the taxpayer.”
