<p>Accepting the resignation with immediate effect, the Governor, in his letter to Kumaraswamy, wrote, "Until alternative arrangements are made kindly continue as a caretaker Chief Minister. It is needless to state that no executive decisions be taken during this period."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Right after the defeat of the Congress-JD(S) government in the trust vote in the Assembly, Kumaraswamy had proceeded to the Raj Bhavan to submit his resignation.</p>

<p>Earlier, BJP state president <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/it-is-the-victory-of-democracy-bs-yeddyurappa-on-winning-trust-vote-in-karnataka-assembly-238012">BS Yeddyurappa</a> said, "It is the victory of democracy. People were fed up with the H D Kumaraswamy government. I want to assure the people of Karnataka that a new era of development will start now onwards."</p>

<p>The confidence motion moved by Kumaraswamy got 99 votes as against 105 of the opposition leading to its defeat.</p>

<p>Yesterday, the Karnataka government led by BS&nbsp;Yeddyurappa resigned before going in for the floor test in the Vidhan Soudha.</p>

<p>The floor test was to be conducted on the instructions of the Vala after the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) alliance also claimed the right to form the government in the state on the basis of the 117 seats it had as compared to the 104 seats that the BJP had.</p>

<p>On Friday, while hearing a petition of the Congress-JD(S) alliance, the Supreme Court reduced the 15-day original time given by Governor Vala to the BJP to prove its majority in the house and asked the party to hold the trust vote on Saturday at 4 p.m.</p>

Giving 15 days to BJP to prove majority was 'mockery of democracy': Rajnikanth on Karnataka imbroglio

<p>The Supreme Court will today decide on an application by the Congress and the JD(S) challenging Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala's decision to appoint KG Bopaiah as the pro-tem Speaker ahead of the floor test in the Karnataka Assembly today.<br />

The application was filed late evening on Friday and has been listed to be heard by a bench of Justice AK Sikri, Justice SA Bobde and Justice Ashok Bhushan at 10.30 am on Saturday.</p>

<p>Bopaiah, a relatively junior MLA, has to preside over the floor test on Saturday to ascertain whether newly-appointed Chief Minister Yeddyurappa enjoys a majority support in the assembly.</p>

<p>The application asks for the appointment of Bopaiah to be revoked and for the senior-most member to be appointed in his place. It has also sought the videography of the floor test.</p>

<p>The petition also states that except for administering oath and conducting floor test, the pro-term Speaker should be restrained from exercising any other power.</p>

<p>The Congress alleged on Saturday that Bopiah had been appointed pro-tem speaker "with the sole intent of manufacturing a majority out of minority for Yeddyurappa".</p>

<p>The application states that Bopaiah has a "dubious and controversial record of passing biased disqualification orders" and has been "severely criticised and strictures" were passed against him by the Supreme Court.</p>

<p>Pro-tem speaker is a temporary speaker appointed for a limited time period to conduct the work of the Lok Sabha or the state assemblies.<br />

<p>A group of Congress workers today assembled outside the home of Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala here and shouted slogans against him following which 30 of them were detained, the police said.</p>

<p>They were protesting against Vala's decision to invite the BJP to form the government in Karnataka despite the saffron party's numbers being less than the combined tally of the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) in the state Assembly.</p>

<p>Congress city unit chief Mahesh Rajput, who led the protest outside Vala's Nutan Nagar society residence near Kalavad Road here, called the Karnataka governor's act a "blot on democracy"</p>

<p>"Despite being the governor of a state, Vala has acted like a BJP worker," Rajput alleged.</p>

<p>Yeddyurappa took the oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Raj Bhavan amid tight security.</p>

<p>The court, however, sought the communications which Yeddyurappa had written to Karnataka Governor informing him his election as BJP legislature party.</p>

<p>The apex court said that the swearing-in is subject to the final outcome of the matter before it.</p>

<p>The bench headed by Justice A.K. Sikri, while seeking Yeddyurappa`s response on the petition by Congress and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) seeking to stall his swearing-in, has directed further hearing of the matter at 10.30 a.m. on Friday.</p>

<p>As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and Janata Dal(Secular) vie for power in Karnataka, the focus has turned to Governor Vajubhai Vala. Vala, an old BJP hand who is considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has put all appointments on hold till all results are out.</p>

<p>Vala was appointed as the Governor of Karnataka in August 2014, a few months after Narendra Modi stormed to power in New Delhi. He was serving as Gujarat Assembly speaker since January 2013 before he was sent to the southern state.</p>

<p>Vala, who represented the Rajkot West constituency in the Gujarat assembly for a record seven times, had been the state BJP president, Assembly Speaker and a Cabinet minister holding crucial portfolios.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Vala, who has earned a reputation of a crisis manager in the Gujarat unit of the BJP, was made state party chief after the rebellion by Shankarsinh Vaghela in the mid-90s that resulted in the fall of Keshubhai Patel government.</p>

<p>Vala, the son of a Rajkot businessman, started his career as a Sangh pracharak while still in school. He joined the Jana Sangh at 26 and eventually won a seat in the Rajkot Municipal Corporation in 1975, and in 1983, he became Rajkot mayor.</p>

<p>The party is preparing the ground to move court in case of a negative response from the Raj Bhavan, party insiders said as reports came in of its MLAs in the southern state being taken to the governor in a show of strength.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We have staked our claim for formation of a government as we have the numbers as also the total vote share of over 56 per cent," added a senior party leader.</p>

<p>"All options remain open to the Congress," the party's communications in-charge Randeep Surjewala said when asked what the party would do if the governor invited the BJP to form government.</p>

<p>He said the governor is expected to listen to the mandate of the people.</p>

<p>Yesterday's results in Karnataka threw a fractured verdict with no party getting a simple majority.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The BJP emerged the single largest party with 104 seats but fell short of the half-way mark of 112.</p>

<p>The Congress-JD(S) combine together got 115 seats, moving quickly even as the counting of votes was underway yesterday and requested the governor to allow the formation of a JD(S)-led government.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The BJP also staked its claim with its chief ministerial candidate B S Yeddyurappa meeting the governor twice since yesterday evening when the results were declared.&nbsp;</p>
