US midterm elections: When do polls open and close, and when will results be announced?

The 2026 midterm election which is set to take place across the United States in a few hours from now is going to be a crucial political test for President Donald Trump and both major parties (Democrats and Republicans). With control of Congress at stake, the results could have far-reaching implications for Washington and the remainder of Trump's presidency. Meanwhile, news agency the Associated Press is gearing up to announce the US election winners, as it has done since several years.
Why does AP calls US election winners?
But why does AP calls US election winners needs a bit of explanation. For people who are new to US elections, AP has declared winners in US elections since 1848, when it reported the victory of Whig candidate Zachary Taylor over Democrat Lewis Cass. That's because the Founding Fathers did not set up a single federal election authority that collected and announced nationwide results. Elections were administered separately by states and local jurisdictions during that time and newspapers depended on information arriving from different parts of the country. So, national news organisation could collect, consolidate and distribute results much more efficiently which is why AP gradually became a trusted central source for election information. So every US election night, The Associated Press counts the the total votes polled by tallying millions of ballots and determining which candidates have won their races. However, the news agency does not officially decide who wins an election. It reports and declares, as a news organisation, when the available evidence establishes who has won. It is the government authority that makes the final announcement.

Why AP calls US elections: When and how the tradition was established

As the results of Tuesday's midterm elections votes are still being counted, Democrats are just one seat away from claiming a majority in the US Senate next year.

With both Democrats and Republicans fighting for the victory, the competition gets tough as the campaigning for Georgia's run-off on December 6 is underway.

If Democratic Senator Catherina Cortez Masto defeats Republican opposition, Adam Laxalt, her party would then hold 50 of the Senate's seats. However, Laxalt was in the lead by nearly 800 votes in Nevada, and uncounted votes of Catherine might change the decision, Reuters reported.

If Democrats win in Georgina it would then be able to take control of the 51-49 Senates. But if they fail to win in Georgia but claim victory in Nevada, it would still hold control over 50-50 Senate seats as the US VP Kamala Harris can tie votes.

US midterms: Democrats await Nevada election results to claim Senate majority

US President Joe Biden's Democratic Party has managed to hold on to its seat in Arizona, US networks projected on Friday (November 12). This has left the party just one seat short of retaining control of the US Senate. The network projections have showed that Democratic Senator Mark Kelly has won the re-election. Democrats now have 49 seats in the 100-seat Senate. Even if Democrats and Republicans have 50 seats each, Democrats would have majority considering Vice President Kamala Harris has casting vote.

Blake Masters, the Republican rival to Kelly, did not immediately concede defeat in Arizona, and late Friday Trump posted on his social media account that some voting machines in Arizona didn't work and the result is "a scam and voter fraud... Do election over again!"

In Pennsylvania, Democrats flipped a highly-prized US Senate seat with constant attacks on Trump-endorsed celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz, who had never held public office before and lived mostly in New Jersey.

Trump had hoped to ride a Republican "red wave" that would prime him for another presidential run but the party is looking at a much smaller victory than had been predicted.

With 211 seats so far, Republicans appear poised to secure a slim majority in the 435-seat House of Representatives. However, control of the Senate may come down to a December 6 runoff in the southeastern state of Georgia.

Democrat Senator Mark Kelly retains Arizona, party just a win short from majority: Reports

While scores of social media posts tried to raise questions on democrat victories in the US Mid Term elections, the misinformation didn't come close to the "firestorm" that was Joe Biden's presidential victory in 2020.

As per Reuters while back in 2020, then-President Donald Trump encouraged false stories about election fraud on Twitter; this time around significantly less notable/well-known people did that.

Compared to the 2020 presidential elections, US midterms saw less misinformation, but it was there

Markets and people alike are awaiting the official results of the US Midterm elections with bated breath. The question remains; who will win this race, Democrats or Republicans? While we may not know that for sure at this moment, we do know who is winning the seat of Pennsylvania's State Representative.

The answer may come as a surprise. A state lawmaker who passed away from cancer last month, according to news sources citing preliminary results has been reelected, that too in a landslide win.

However, at the time of his death, it was too late to remove his name from the ballot for the nationwide US congressional elections that were held on Tuesday.
