A power transition is underway in the US as President-elect Donald Trump pieces together what is being described by Western media as the most controversial cabinet in the country’s history. News agency Reuters has now reported that it could be Donald Trump Jr, the incoming president’s son, calling the shots from behind. Citing several sources, including Republican donors and loyalists, the news agency reported that Trump junior is playing an instrumental role in helping his father make high-stake decisions.

According to the report, Trump junior helped his father choose JD Vance as his running mate ahead of the elections and was behind blocking former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo from joining the administration. Vance is Trump junior’s close friend, who worked as his extra political capital.

'Neck-and-neck' was the keyword ahead of the November 5 elections in the US, with most opinion pollsters predicting a tight race between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump. When the dust settled, Trump not only emerged the winner with a considerable margin in electoral votes but also got the popular vote. The pre-election opinion polling, while most of it appeared uniform, was practically one-sided.

The polling results were used by left-liberal and pro-Harris media to bolster her candidacy, arguing that the incumbent vice president is 'doing well' among key voting populations like women, the youth and minorities.

Going into the results night, there was optimism in many news studios aligned with Democrats, but the mood quickly changed as Trump went way ahead way early, winning some swing states besides the usual red states.

CNN anchor John King, famous for his enthusiastic fast-paced result analysis using the US map on a screen dubbed 'magic wall', appeared less exuberant as the results poured in, a scene vastly different from his presentation in 2020 when Biden won.

Much before the final results, he said, "Donald Trump is knocking on the door", adding “He’s going to get there.”

There was a meltdown in the unabashedly pro-Harris MSNBC studio. Anchors and panellists at NBC News, ABC News and CBS News, the other major networks generally seen as favouring Democrats, had a worried and dull look on their faces when announcing the results. The focus immediately turned to discussing how horrible a Trump presidency would be.

Several of them shifted their anger to 'misinformation', blaming Trump backer Elon Musk's social media platform X and conspiracy theories spread by Trump surrogates as reasons for the former president's unassailable victory.

All this amounts to telling the majority of American voters that they are dumb.

But it can be argued that it was the opinion pollsters who tried to misguide and make a fool of the voters by peddling the lie that it was a 'neck-and-neck' race.

Ahead of the election, the FiveThirtyEight website, which tracks the mood of the nation, put Harris ahead of Trump after compiling the last batch of opinion polls.

But the difference was minor: she was ahead at 48 per cent while Trump was at 46.8 per cent.

Among these pollsters, NPR-PBS News, Harris X-Forbes [no relation to Kamala Harris or X] and Ipsos-Reuters gave the highest favourability points to Harris, between 51 and 50 per cent. Only AtlasIntel and ActiVote gave similar percentages to Trump.

On the question of whether voters wanted Republicans or Democrats in Congress, the average of all polls tracked by FiveThirtyEight gave Democrats the edge at 46.3 per cent as against 45.6 per cent for the Republicans. That was proven wrong in the final count.

Interestingly, even Democrat-aligned pollsters found that more people have an unfavourable opinion of Kamala Harris - 48 per cent as opposed to a favourable opinion of 46 per cent.

In their calculations, Trump was seen as unfavourable by nearly 60 per cent of respondents as opposed to 44 per cent that found him favourable.

Come election night, most if not all of these observations fell flat in the face of reality.

The punters and financial markets, overall, had more accuracy in predicting the election win for Trump than pollsters, who apparently use 'scientific' methods and mathematical models to reach their conclusions.

What could have gone wrong?

Americans who voted for Trump and his Republican party are not fools or 'garbage' as President Joe Biden once characterised them.

They have voted out an unpopular government.

They voted for issues that mattered to them the most: jobs, cost of living and illegal immigration, among other things.

It is as simple as that.

The pollsters failed to assess the public mood on the ground, particularly that of the silent majority.

In their surveying, they may have been talking to the converted, which gave the false impression that Democrats are either leading or giving tough competition to Republicans.

This leaves open several questions on their methodology. How are they collecting data? Who are they approaching with survey questions? Are their survey respondents providing truthful information? Are they always talking to the same people, populations or community groups to create their data sets?

It is not the first time that opinion pollsters, who have had a significant impact on the elections since they came into prominence in 1976, have gone wrong.

But the suspicion now is: which of these pollsters are politically aligned to one party or the other? Could such tacit alliances be leading to lopsided polling that is skewed in favour of the party of their choice?

The lack of accountability, and short public memory, is quite disturbing when it comes to opinion polling and those who conduct them.

With such a wide error margin between their projections and the actual outcome, shouldn't such opinion polling also come under mis/disinformation, the pet term used by left-liberal media to bash Trump?

This is a grey area. Not many strict laws have been implemented on conflict of interest in companies or news organisations doing opinion polling.

But it is high time that they are called out.

His Republican party went on to take the majority in both the Senate and House of Representatives, thus sweeping the power trifecta of the world's oldest democracy. Watch - USA News: Disappointed Americans Consider Moving Abroad After Elections Result × The pre-election opinion polling, while most of it appeared uniform, was practically one-sided. Much before the final results, he said, "Donald Trump is knocking on the door", adding “He’s going to get there.” There was a meltdown in the unabashedly pro-Harris MSNBC studio. US election: Opinion pollsters were the biggest losers. It's time to call them out

US Senate Republicans elected John Thune to lead the chamber next year, opting for a well-regarded insider and shrugging off a public pressure campaign by supporters of Donald Trump to pick a loyalist to the president-elect.

The South Dakota senator's victory is a sign the Senate could retain some degree of independence from Trump next year, when Republicans will control the White House and possibly both chambers of Congress. Republicans will hold at least 52 seats in the 100-seat Senate and are on track to retain their majority in the House of Representatives, where several races have yet to be decided.

"This Republican team is united behind President Trump's agenda, and our work starts today," Thune said in a statement.

Thune, 63, is seen as an even-tempered institutionalist and seasoned legislator who has close relationships with many of his fellow Republicans. He currently serves as the chamber's No. 2 Republican and will succeed 82-year-old Mitch McConnell, the longest-serving party leader in Senate history. He was first elected to the Senate in 2004.

Thune prevailed over Senator John Cornyn of Texas, another long-serving institutionalist, by a 29-24 vote, according to a Thune spokesperson. Rick Scott of Florida, a close ally of Trump who was backed by influential outsiders like billionaire Elon Musk and conservative commentator Sean Hannity, was eliminated in a first round of voting.

Scott's bid made the normally clubby election an early test of Senate independence under Trump, who had not endorsed a candidate but called on the next Republican leader to give him leeway to bypass the normal system of hearings and votes to approve Cabinet nominees. All three contenders quickly signalled their openness to the idea.

Some of Trump's loudest supporters had expressed concern that Thune and Cornyn, who had both worked closely with McConnell, might lack the willingness to deliver on some of Trump's campaign promises. Both have served for two decades, delivered major legislation and helped elect other Republicans. Scott, first elected in 2018, is a hardline conservative who previously served two terms as Florida governor.

Senate Republicans resisted that pressure, saying the job requires someone who has spent time building trust among colleagues.

The vote came as Trump met with Democratic President Joe Biden at the White House, where both men promised a smooth transfer of power in January.

US Senate Republicans elect John Thune as their next leader

The silent majority who were frustrated with the wars and high inflation voted Donald Trump to power, an eminent Indian American Republican leader has said exuding confidence that it would be a successful second term.

On November 6, Trump was elected the US president for a second term in one of the greatest political comebacks in American history, four years after an election loss in 2020 that sparked a violent insurrection at the US Capitol.

The 78-year-old Republican leader defeated his Democratic rival Kamala Harris in a bitterly fought election.

"We have been forecasting this. We were seeing it in the ground movement. There was a silent majority. This was a result of America's lost foreign policies, the domestic inflation, out-of-control crime, out-of-control illegal immigration, poor infrastructure, and the Biden-Harris administration focusing on social issues that were not relevant with the masses,” Jasdip Singh Jassee, founder of Sikhs for Trump told PTI.

“So, we have seen that anger, the disappointment of the masses in the Biden-Harris administration for the last four years that have come out. President Trump won with a very very decisive historical victory where he not only took the electoral college but also the popular vote. He has flipped a lot of deep blue counties like in California eight counties have been flipped,” he said.

Under Trump’s leadership, the Republican party has got a majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate, he said.

Referring to the dozen-odd senior administration positions announced by Trump in the very first week of winning the presidential elections, Singh said the new Trump administration is shaping up very thoughtfully.

“We see a big difference in how he picked his Cabinet in 2016 and how he is picking them now. He is much more experienced; he has seen how this works and the people he's bringing into his Cabinet are amazing. The picks that he had for the Border Czar, for the United Nations Ambassador, even for Secretary of State and recently appointed Governor Huckabee as Ambassador to Israel, which is a very important position for the US. I think all these picks have been very, very thoughtfully done and excellent picks,” he said.

“I think it's going to be a very successful second term. I think Republicans will have, even after President Trump's four years, I'm pretty sure Republicans will come back again and the country will be brought to the centre. It's dangerously to the left, which is not good for any society, either for the left or far right. The centre is always good. I think under President Trump's administration, the country will be inching towards the centre,” Singh said.

Singh said India-US relationships are going to be very strong under President Trump.

“Probably the strongest of the two nations that I have ever seen. If you look at these Cabinet picks they're heavily pro-India like the India Caucus head has been given one of the positions,” he said.

“His policies are going to be America first. But I think he sees India as a very valuable partner. He has a personal relationship with Prime Minister Modi, a very positive one. Both leaders have a mutual respect, understanding, and affection for each other,” Singh said.

Elon Musk not leaving Trump's Mar-a-Lago; holds telephonic conversation with world leaders: Report

Melania Trump, wife of US president-elect Donald Trump, has turned down an invitation to visit the White House and meet First Lady Jill Biden, reportedly because she's still angry over the FBI’s 2022 search of her Mar-a-Lago residence.

According to The New York Post, Melania declined the meeting, a traditional courtesy extended between outgoing and incoming first ladies, because “Jill Biden’s husband authorised the FBI snooping through her underwear drawer”.

The publication quoted a source close to Melania as saying: “The Bidens are disgusting,” and that “Jill Biden isn’t someone Melania needs to meet.”

While Melania is opting out of the customary tour and tea — a tradition she participated in when Michelle Obama hosted her after Trump’s 2016 win — her husband, President-elect Donald Trump, is expected to meet with President Joe Biden in the Oval Office on Wednesday (Nov 13).

Trump had declined to extend the same invitation to the Bidens in 2020, breaking the decades long White House custom.

Mar-a-Lago search

The 2022 FBI search of Mar-a-Lago was part of a federal investigation into classified documents that were reportedly taken from the White House after Trump’s presidency. The classified documents case was dismissed by US Judge Aileen Cannon in July.

Melania has previously voiced her frustration about the search in a Fox and Friends interview in September, calling it an “invasion of privacy.”

She described returning to her residence to find her personal spaces ransacked, including her closet and her son Barron’s room: “I saw unpleasant stuff that nobody wants to see.”

“You get angry because, you know, nobody should be putting up with that kind of stuff,” she added.

Trump had declined to extend the same invitation to the Bidens in 2020, breaking the decades long White House custom. Mar-a-Lago search The 2022 FBI search of Mar-a-Lago was part of a federal investigation into classified documents that were reportedly taken from the White House after Trump’s presidency. The classified documents case was dismissed by US Judge Aileen Cannon in July. Also read | Convicted felon Donald Trump wins US elections: Will he face sentencing or will he self-pardon? At least two officials associated with the US President-elect Donald Trump's previous administration told senior Israeli ministers not to assume that Trump would support annexing the West Bank in his second term, sources told Times for Israel.

The message was delivered in separate meetings and conversations during the presidential campaign, but Israel did not seem much affected by it.

On Monday (Nov 11), Israel's Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich declared that 2025 would be “the year of sovereignty in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) thanks to Trump’s return to office."

"I intend, with God's help, to lead a government decision that says that the government of Israel will work with the new administration of President Trump and the international community to apply the Israeli sovereignty over Judea and Samaria and for American and international recognition and to the end of the Israeli-Arab conflict in the Middle East," Reuters reported him saying.

Trump’s 2017-2021 presidency was often defined on the world stage by his "America First" protectionist trade policy and isolationist rhetoric, including threats to withdraw from NATO.

When Trump was last in the White House, he presided over the signing of the Abraham Accords between Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. But those diplomatic deals did nothing to advance Palestinian statehood in the West Bank and Gaza.

Germany Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke to the US President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday (Nov 10) by phone and “agreed to work towards a return to peace in Europe,” chancellor’s spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit said in a brief statement.

"Both exchanged views on the German-American relationship and the current geopolitical challenges," Hebestreit said.

"The chancellor underlined the government's willingness to continue the decades-long successful cooperation between the governments of both countries,” the statement read.

“They also agreed to work together towards a return to peace in Europe."

This conversation comes as Scholz is mired in political crises and is set to face snap elections. The German Chancellor said on Sunday that he would be willing to call a vote of confidence in parliament before Christmas.

Scholz’s three-way coalition collapsed last week as disagreements grew over how much money the government should spend to encourage growth and support to Ukraine.

"I'm not clinging to my job," he said in an interview on ARD television.

Now, with Trump back in the White House, who has been vocal about curtailing the finds to Ukraine, the president-elect will look forward to putting an end to the three-year-long war quickly.

President-elect Donald Trump urged his supporters on Saturday (Nov. 9) to lend financial support to the Democrats as they face a tough financial situation following the recent general election.

President-elect Donald Trump urged his supporters on Saturday (Nov. 9) to lend financial support to the Democrats as they face a tough financial situation following the recent general election. What did Trump say? In a post on X, Trump mentioned that despite record fundraising efforts during the 2020 Presidential Election, the Democrats are now low on funds. “I am very surprised that the Democrats, who fought a hard and valiant fight in the 2020 Presidential Election, raising a record amount of money, didn’t have lots of $’s left over. Now they are being squeezed by vendors and others. Whatever we can do to help them during this difficult period, I would strongly recommend we, as a Party and for the sake of desperately needed UNITY, do. We have a lot of money left over in that our biggest asset in the campaign was ‘Earned Media,’ and that doesn’t cost very much. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" he said, referencing reports that the Harris campaign is currently $20 million in debt. Also read: Inderjeet Gosal, man behind Hindu temple attack in Canada arrested Kamala Harris, 60, was the Democratic candidate in the November 5 elections but was defeated by Trump. She had set new fundraising records, but her campaign now finds itself under financial strain. Data from the Federal Election Commission shows that the Harris campaign and associated Super PACs brought in $2.3 billion and spent $1.9 billion. Comparatively, Trump’s campaign raised over $1.8 billion and spent $1.6 billion. “Despite raising and spending over USD 1 billion in fundraising, Kamala Harris’ 2014 election bid failed to resonate with the voters who mattered most. The heavy reliance on celebrity endorsements, star-studded concerts, and backing from elite political figures couldn’t bridge the growing gap between the party and middle-class Americans struggling with rising costs for groceries, rent, and healthcare,” said Ajay Jain Bhutoria, a top fundraiser for the Harris Campaign, in an interview with PTI. '$1 billion disaster' Several members of the Democratic Party weren't happy with the campaign's execution. Lindy Li, a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee (DNC), described the outcome as a “$1 billion disaster” on Fox & Friends Weekend. “The truth is, this is just an epic disaster. This is a $1 billion disaster,” Li said. Li further explained that fundraisers were promised a close election, leading many to raise large sums. “I raised millions of that. I have friends that I have to be accountable to and to explain what happened because I told them it was a margin of error race. I was promised, [Harris campaign chair] Jen O’Malley Dillon promised all of us that Harris would win. She even put videos out that Harris would win. I believed her, my donors believed her. And so they wrote massive checks,” Li stated. (With inputs from agencies)

After all the frenzy around the US presidential election, the Americans finally made a choice on November 5 by choosing Republican Donald Trump as their next President. At the victory speech, the former President was joined by his running mate JD Vance, his entire family and a very special guest- Elon Musk.

While addressing his supporters at Mar-a-Lago in Florida after the election win, Trump introduced Musk as “a star is born,” amid an enthusiastic crowd.

The great introduction came after the Tesla CEO’s great support of Trump in his campaign—from attending rallies to donating more than $100 million to Republican causes, Musk did it all. Now, reports are surfacing that the billionaire mid-lands a role in Trump’s new cabinet, which is set to be inaugurated on January 6.

Trump first revealed such plans during an interview in October, where he said he is looking to appoint a “secretary of cost-cutting.” He also insisted that he would defer to Musk when it came to shutting down various agencies and essentially “trimming” the government.

“I’m going to have Elon Musk — he is dying to do this. You know, he’s a great business guy, actually. You think of him for science and rockets. And every time I think he’s telling me about a new screw that was developed, he’s developed a new screw — screws are difficult — and it’s made out of titanium, and it’s so exciting. But you know what? He’s a great business guy, and he’s a great cost-cutter. You’ve seen that. And he said I could cut costs without affecting anybody,” Trump told Fox News during an interaction.
