However, the US President, in response, said that he ‘could not oblige’ and that it was the speaker’s own choice to decide on her overseas visits as the US Congress is an independent government branch, The Washington Post reported.

Additionally, Biden also warned his counterpart against using provocative and coercive tactics during Pelosi’s visit. National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said, "Members of Congress have gone to Taiwan for decades and will continue to do so. Speaker Pelosi had every right to go, and her visit is consistent with our long-standing One-China policy," the newspaper quoted. However, since 1997, no US House Speaker had&nbsp;visited Taiwan until Pelosi at the beginning of August this year.

China denounced Pelosi’s visit and began its extensive military drills close to the island. Beijing also opposes official interactions between Taiwan and any other country because the island is considered an integral part of its territory. It further stated that the "One China" principle is a political pillar of China-US relations and that breaking these commitments can harm bilateral cooperation.

It was an overreaction," ANI reported.

The ambassador said, "Incumbent upon the government here in Beijing to convince the rest of the world that it will act peacefully in the future." He added, "I think there's a lot of concern around the world that China has now become an agent of instability in the Taiwan Strait and that's not in anyone's interest," ANI reported.

“However, it will immediately help to sell more guns and make this sheriff more popular with the gun lobby that he is hoping to be a champion with,” he said.

Move to place assault rifles in US schools draws strong reaction

A member of Islamic State cell known as "The Beatles" was sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in the killings of US journalists and aid worker in Syria. The sentence was handed to El Shafee Elsheikh (34), the IS member by judge TS Ellis. The life imprisonment sentence is without parole. The judge called Elsheikh's behaviour "horrific, barbaric, brutal and of course criminal."

Elsheikh, a British citizen, was part of an Islamic State cell nicknamed "The Beatles" because of the&nbsp;English accent of its members. The cell beheaded American hostages in areas of the Middle East controlled by the militant group. He was found guilty on four counts of hostage-taking and four counts of conspiracy after a two-week trial.

The victims' relatives and friends sat in the front rows of the courtroom and were visibly shaken during the course of the hearing as tears rolled down their eyes and they consoled each other. Elsheikh was sentenced to eight concurrent life sentences.

At the peak of its power from 2014-2017, Islamic State ruled over millions of people and claimed responsibility for or inspired attacks in dozens of cities around the world.

Its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, declared a caliphate over a quarter of Iraq and Syria in 2014, before he was killed in a raid by US special forces in Syria in 2019 as the group's rule collapsed.

Elsheikh, who was born in Sudan and raised in London, was accused of conspiring to kill four American hostages: James Foley, Steven Sotloff, Peter Kassig and Kayla Mueller.

Foley and Sotloff were journalists and Kassig was an aid worker. All of them were killed in videotaped beheadings. Mueller was raped repeatedly by al-Baghdadi before her death in Syria, US officials have said.

The deaths of Foley, Sotloff and Kassig were confirmed in 2014; Mueller's death was confirmed in early 2015.

The department will automatically cancel all loans for students who attended ITT from January 2005 to September 2016, affecting roughly 208,000 borrowers. 
 
The debt forgiveness comes atop Biden`s signing into law the historic climate change, health care, and inflation reduction besides the semiconductor bill and a slew of other measures aimed at improving the general welfare of the Americans, especially the poor, urban middle class families with low drug prices, tax incentives and creating more jobs.

Before declaring bankruptcy, ITT had been under investigation for a variety of deceptive practices. "The evidence shows that for years, ITT`s leaders intentionally misled students about the quality of their programs in order to profit off federal student loan programs, with no regard for the hardship this would cause," Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a statement Tuesday. 
 
Cardona also said that the Biden administration would "continue to stand up for borrowers who`ve been cheated by their colleges, while working to strengthen oversight and enforcement to protect today`s students from similar deception and abuse." Including this most recent announcement, the Biden administration has forgiven nearly $32 billion in student loans. 
 
Even as Budget hawks lobby against broad debt forgiveness, the Biden administration is currently considering what to do about the nation`s $1.5 trillion student loan portfolio, payments on which were suspended repeatedly during the Covid-19 crisis. 
 
Though the most recent extension of the suspension expires at the end of August, many analysts expect the administration to extend the pause again, at least through the end of the year, according to multiple reports in the US media. 
 
Equally, some student loan activists have been calling on the White House to forgive student loan debt, in full or in part, with forgiveness of $10,000 per borrower being one frequently cited option.

On Tuesday, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a fiscally conservative group that generally opposes student debt forgiveness, published an analysis of the cost of doing so. 
 
Extending the payment pause for the rest of the year would cost $20 billion, CRFB estimated. And cancelling $10,000 in debt for middle- and low-income borrowers (defined as earning less than $300,000 per year) would cost $230 billion over 10 years. 
 
The CRFB analysts note that the cost would wipe out much of the budgetary savings provided by the climate and health bill signed into law by President Biden on Tuesday. "Combined, these policies would consume nearly ten years of deficit reduction from the Inflation Reduction Act," CRFB said.
