TikTok threatens to 'go dark' after US court ruling on shutdown

US President-elect Donald Trump said on Saturday (Jan 18) that he will "most likely" give <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/tiktok-ban" rel="dofollow">TikTok </a>a 90-day reprieve from a potential ban in the US after he takes office on Monday (Jan 20).&nbsp;
Trump, in an interview with NBC News "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker, said that he hadn't made a final decision but was considering a 90-day extension of the deadline given to the China-based social media company.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I think that would be certainly an option that we look at. The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done because it&rsquo;s appropriate. You know, it&rsquo;s appropriate. We have to look at it carefully. It&rsquo;s a very big situation,&rdquo; Trump said in a phone interview.

<h2>'To be announced on Monday'</h2>
&ldquo;If I decide to do that, I&rsquo;ll probably announce it on Monday,&rdquo; he said.
However, an extension may not be enough to prevent the app from going dark for at least a day because the current deadline for compliance is Sunday.
TikTok on Friday announced plans to "go dark" in America on Sunday (Jan 19) unless the Biden administration "provides a definitive statement" that the law forcing its sale won't be enforced.

"Unless the Biden Administration immediately provides a definitive statement to satisfy the most critical service providers assuring non-enforcement, unfortunately, TikTok will be forced to go dark on January 19," TikTok said.
Earlier on Friday, the US Supreme Court upheld a law requiring TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to divest its US operations or face a complete ban in the country.&nbsp;
The top court, in its ruling, found that the law banning TikTok was not in violation of free speech rights.

Meanwhile, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called TikTok&rsquo;s plans to go dark &ldquo;a stunt&rdquo; in a statement issued on Saturday morning.
&ldquo;We have seen the most recent statement from TikTok. It is a stunt, and we see no reason for TikTok or other companies to take actions in the next few days before the Trump Administration takes office on Monday,&rdquo; she said.
&ldquo;We have laid out our position clearly and straightforwardly: actions to implement this law will fall to the next administration. So TikTok and other companies should take up any concerns with them,&rdquo; she said.

As Donald Trump's inauguration nears, Washington DC residents are&nbsp; fleeing the city, trying to stay away from the event, saying that they do not want to be around that "sort of hostile negative energy".
US President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration is scheduled to be held on Monday (Jan 20) as he takes over the Oval Office.
Alejandra Whitney-Smith, a resident of DC, whose birthday weekend is coinciding with Trump's inauguration, said that she is planning to spend a week in a cabin without technology, the Guardian reported.&nbsp;

"It (inauguration weekend) coincides with my birthday weekend, which I usually do spend in DC, but when the election happened, I told myself, &lsquo;Oh, no, I can&rsquo;t be here,&rsquo;&rdquo; said Whitney-Smith.
<h2>'Ugly side of America'</h2>
While commenting on Trump's re-election, she said, "It represents the ugly side of America that people don&rsquo;t want to acknowledge.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Smith's mother was working at the Library of Congress during the January 6 attack on the US Capitol in 2021. I just knew for me &ndash; I didn&rsquo;t want to be around that sort of hostile negative energy.&rdquo;
She further said that she would hunker down in a cabin with four friends during the inauguration weekend and do some vision boarding, reflection, and reconnection.&nbsp;

US Homeland Security secretary nominee Kristi Noem said Friday that weaknesses at the southern border are the country's "number one threat" as she set out her vision for the department that will oversee Donald Trump's promised immigration crackdown. &nbsp;
The South Dakota governor would be in overall charge of Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) -- agencies on the front line of US efforts to get to grips with a surge in undocumented migrants in recent years.
The department also leads on cybersecurity, terrorism and federal emergency management -- another hot-button issue in the wake of last year's two devastating hurricanes and the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles.&nbsp;

Noem, 53, is best known internationally for sinking her chances of being Trump's vice-presidential pick with her cheerful admission that she had shot her dog, Cricket, because it was "untrainable."
Despite her state's distance from Mexico, Noem sent National Guards troops to the frontier, earning plaudits from the Republican right.
In her opening statement, she said the southern border would be a top priority, asserting America's "responsibility to secure our borders against those who would do us harm," while stressing that the system must be fair and lawful.

Underlining her focus on the issue, she was asked about domestic terrorism but pivoted back to the border.
"This is a grave concern for our country, as we all agree that the number one threat to our homeland security is the southern border," she said.
Illegal immigration was a key topic in November's election, and Trump's promises to seal the border and carry out the largest deportation program in American history appeared to resonate at the ballot box.
<h2>'No political bias'&nbsp;</h2>
After the election, Trump named as his new "border czar" Tom Homan, a former acting director of ICE who oversaw a policy that separated parents and children at the border.
Noem, who would be his boss, appeared to have robust support from Republicans who are in the Senate majority and will ultimately decide her future.
But the job is considered a pressure cooker, and Trump went through six permanent or acting Homeland Security secretaries during his first term.
The Democratic appointee that Noem would replace, Alejandro Mayorkas, was a target of Republican fury as illegal entries across the southern border soared in 2023 and he was impeached last year.
Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rand Paul described the 260,000-employee DHS as an agency that "epitomizes unchecked power" and "demands rigorous scrutiny."
He said Noem would have the task of restoring "transparency and accountability" to a bureaucracy that had "lost its way."
Democrats did not give Noem the hard time that other nominees have experienced, and the opening exchanges were cordial.
"Governor, thank you again for your willingness to serve in this incredibly important position," said Gary Peters, the panel's top Democrat.
While much of the questioning focused on immigration, Noem was asked to address the distribution of disaster aid, with Trump and other Republicans suggesting relief for fire-ravaged California should be conditioned on the actions of the state's Democratic leaders.
"Under my leadership at the Department of Homeland Security, there will be no political bias to how disaster relief is delivered to the American people," she pledged.
Newly released financial disclosures reveal that Noem made $139,750 in advance payment for the memoir in which she recounted how she shot and killed her disobedient family pet.

US President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration which is scheduled to be held on Monday (Jan 20) will take place inside the Capitol due to low temperature forecast in Washington DC. As forecasted, a polar vertex is expected to sweep through Washington DC, which will make it an extraordinarily cold Inauguration Day. Trump in an official post on his Truth Social said, "The weather forecast for Washington, D.C., with the wind chill factor, could take temperatures into severe record lows. There is an Arctic blast sweeping the Country. I don’t want to see people hurt, or injured, in any way." Also read: Trump inauguration protest: What to know about People's March in DC? 'Dangerous conditions' He added that there will be dangerous conditions for the tens of thousands of law enforcement, first responders, police K9s and even horses, and hundreds of thousands of supporters that will be outside for many hours on Jan 20. "Therefore, I have ordered the Inauguration Address, in addition to prayers and other speeches, to be delivered in the United States Capitol Rotunda, as was used by Ronald Reagan in 1985, also because of very cold weather. The various Dignitaries and Guests will be brought into the Capitol," Trump said. The United States Supreme Court on Friday (Jan 17) upheld a law that will ban <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/tiktok" rel="dofollow">TikTok</a>, rejecting a last-ditch appeal from the social media app owners, who said that the ban violated the First Amendment.&nbsp;
The court ruled that the law does not violate free speech rights, adding that the US government had shown legitimate national security concerns about the app.&nbsp;
The law will now force TikTok&rsquo;s Chinese owner to sell its US business by Sunday, or face a ban.
<h2>Decision in Trump's hands</h2>
Following the court's statement, US President-elect Donald Trump told CNN that he will decide what to do with TikTok once he takes office, which is scheduled for Monday.&nbsp;

Human Rights Watch on Thursday blasted the "craven unwillingness" of governments to defend international norms and institutions last year, while warning that Donald Trump's return to power will compound pressure on the world's "fraying" rights system.
From Gaza to Sudan, Haiti and Ukraine -- 2024 saw rights violations "at the most extreme," HRW chief Tirana Hassan told AFP in an interview ahead of the Thursday release of the organization's annual report.
Worldwide elections and deadly conflicts over the past year challenged the "integrity of democratic institutions and the principles of human rights and humanitarian law" -- but many governments "have failed the test," the 500-page document said.

It noted mounting repression in Russia, India and Venezuela as well as continuing devastation from the wars in Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine.
These conflicts and other humanitarian crises, marked by the "craven unwillingness of many governments to stand up to suffering and abuse," exposed the "fraying of international norms meant to protect civilians and the devastating human cost when they are flouted," according to the report.
It called out authoritarian governments -- including in Russia and Mali -- for violating democratic norms, while also slamming liberal democracies, saying they were "not always reliable champions of human rights at home or abroad."

Hassan pointed to US President Joe Biden continuing to provide Israel with weapons, despite mounting evidence they have "been used in the commission of war crimes and the killing of civilians" in Gaza.
She said 2024 showed "how inconsistent the commitment to human rights" has been.
"That is very dangerous, because it sends a message that certain rights apply to some people and they don't to others," the Singapore-born lawyer said.

<h2>Trump 'vacuum'&nbsp;</h2>
With Trump's return to the US presidency, HRW expressed concern that his administration would "repeat and even magnify the serious rights violations of his first term."
Renewed attacks by Trump on minority rights, international law and multilateral institutions risk "emboldening illiberal leaders worldwide to follow suit," it warned.
Hassan said that a US retreat from multilateral systems under Trump's second term would create "a real vacuum, which is going to be filled by opportunistic actors like China" to advance their "anti-rights agenda."
"But it's not all doom and gloom," she said, pointing to some progress last year in international courts, such as South Africa's case against Israel over its war in Gaza.
Popular uprisings have also seen success in pushing back against authoritarian regimes, such as in Bangladesh, where longtime ruler Sheikh Hasina was ousted in August.
"These resistance movements highlight a crucial reality: the fight for rights is often driven by ordinary people, fed up with injustice and corruption, bringing together their collective power to compel governments to uphold basic rights and serve the people instead of their own interests," the HRW report said.
<h2>'Time to double down'&nbsp;</h2>
Hassan described the continued global fight for rights as "the challenge of our time."
While people can feel "overwhelmed by the horrors" occurring worldwide, "this isn't a time to look away, if anything, this is a time to double down."
"If there is one thing that 2024 taught us," Hassan said, it is that ignoring human rights violations is "not an academic exercise -- it is not simply a question of law.
"People's lives are impacted. People are dying, people are starving, people are being hurt."
HRW's report, which reviews the situation in about 100 countries, highlighted the "widespread atrocities" faced by civilians in Sudan, while Haiti has seen gang violence reach "catastrophic levels."
It also called out Israel for committing "crimes against humanity" and possibly "genocide" during the Gaza war.
At a ceremony to launch the report on Thursday, Hassan said "the heinous crimes" committed in the conflict "should not go unpunished."
"While yesterday Israeli officials and Hamas agreed to a multi-phase ceasefire, the heinous crimes committed on and since October 7, 2023, should not go unpunished," she said.

<h2>Trump reportedly trying to preserve TikTok</h2>
Donald Trump's pick for national security adviser, Florida Rep. Mike Waltz, said on Wednesday in an interview that the US President-elect was reviewing prospects to &ldquo;preserve&rdquo; TikTok.
Waltz's comment came in response to a Fox News anchor's question about a Washington Post report, which claimed that Trump was mulling an executive order to suspend the enforcement of a federal law that could potentially lead to a nationwide ban on TikTok by Sunday (Jan 19), affecting around 170 million users in America.
Earlier in December, Trump held a meeting with Chew, and ahead of his meeting, he said that he had a "warm spot in my heart for TikTok."&nbsp;

"Americans are being buried under an avalanche of misinformation and disinformation enabling the abuse of power," Mr. Biden said. "The free press is crumbling. Errors are disappearing. Social media is giving up on fact-checking. The truth is smothered by lies told for power and for profit."
