The real estate developer made the&nbsp;monumental purchase on Wednesday (Nov 8) of the stamp which originally cost only 24 cents. Hack told the Washington Post that he had been eyeing the coveted stamp since he was a child and called it the “holy grail of postage”.&nbsp;

'Inverted Jenny' features a blue upside-down Curtiss JN-4 aeroplane on a red and white background which dominated postage stamp culture at the time.

It was a misprint of a stamp created in 1918 to commemorate the beginning of regular airmail service in the US.&nbsp;

The printers only created 100 of those inverted stamps before destroying the misprinted sheet, making the surviving stamps incredibly valuable and sought-after by collectors across the world.&nbsp;

“The error occurred either when an inverted carmine frame sheet was fed into the small hand press for the second impression or when the plate printer, after inking and wiping, placed an inverted blue vignette plate into the press,” said Smithsonian’s national postal museum.&nbsp;

Hack is also owner of a few other Inverted Jennys, he told the Washington Post. He bought one in the early 2000s for about $300,000.&nbsp;

In 2007, he bought another, better-quality stamp for around $1 million which was the 57th stamp printed in the original sheet of 100 stamps.&nbsp;

But this time around, Hack managed to buy number 49 on the sheet of 100 stamps which was reportedly bought by a financial clerk named William Robey&nbsp;before the postal officials could destroy the misprinted sheet.&nbsp;

The number 49 had not been seen for a century since its original purchase in 1918 as it was held in a bank vault by its owner and his descendants before it was sold in 2018.&nbsp;

The highly coveted stamp was also featured in a 1993 episode of the long-running American animated show The Simpsons. In the episode, Homer Simpson is seen looking at a sheet of Inverted Jennys during a yard sale.&nbsp;

“The airplane’s upside down,” he says unaware of the stamp’s value before calling it “junk” and tossing it into a pile of “trash” that includes other priceless American artefacts including the Declaration of Independence and a multimillion-dollar Stradivarius violin.

The relaunch of the working group also marks the normalisation of the climate relationship between China and the US after a hiatus triggered by the visit of former House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, the self-governing island that China claims as its territory.&nbsp;

The statement was also released as&nbsp;Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in&nbsp;California’s San Francisco&nbsp;ahead of the much-anticipated meeting with&nbsp;President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the&nbsp;30th&nbsp;Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

The US Supreme Court issued an ethics code on Monday (Nov 13) for its nine justices, after revelations about undisclosed property, luxury trips and gifts sparked a row and mounted pressure on the court.

The justices, in a statement, said that they had established the code of conduct “to set out succinctly and gather in one place the ethics rules and principles that guide the conduct of the members of the court.”&nbsp;

“For the most part these rules and principles are not new,” the court said, further adding that “the absence of a code, however, has led in recent years to the misunderstanding that the justices of this court, unlike all other jurists in this country, regard themselves as unrestricted by any ethics rules.”

The nine-page code includes sections that say justices should not let any outside relationships affect their official conduct or judgment, expounding restrictions on their participation in fundraising and reiterating limits on the accepting of gifts. It also states that justices should not "to any substantial degree" use judicial resources or staff for non-official activities.

A commentary released with the code elaborating on some of its provisions said that justices who are weighing a speaking engagement should "consider whether doing so would create an appearance of impropriety in the minds of reasonable members of the public."

Senator Dick Durbin, who chairs the Democratic-led Senate Judiciary Committee, called the code a "step in the right direction." But Durbin held open the possibility of further legislative efforts if he determines the code falls short of "the ethical standards which other federal judges are held to."

"We are going to carefully review this proposed code of conduct to evaluate whether it complies with our goal that the highest court in the land not languish with the lowest standard of ethics in our federal government," Durbin said.

As per the report, India reached an all-time high of 268,923 international students in 2022/23, an increase of 35% year-over-year. China remained the top sending country in 2022/23 with 289,526 students studying in the US. However, China saw a reduction of 0.2% year-on-year.

"In addition, eight places of origin, including Bangladesh, Colombia, Ghana, India, Italy, Nepal, Pakistan, and Spain, reached all-time highs in international student numbers," the report said. It pointed out that India continued to be the highest priority for undergraduate and graduate recruitment

"Seventy per cent of US institutions are prioritising undergraduate outreach and 80% of U.S. institutions are prioritising graduate outreach for students in India," the report also said.&nbsp;

During 2022/23, the US hosted over one million international students, a 12% increase compared to the previous academic year. It is the fastest growth rate in more than 40 years. The report also said that for the first time since 2014/15, international student enrollment across all academic levels increased in 2022/23.&nbsp;

"Graduate student enrollment increased the most, with 467,027 international students pursuing master’s, doctorate, or professional degrees (+21% year-over year). Undergraduate student enrollment grew (+1% year-over-year) for the first time in five years," it said.

Reacting to the figures, Assistant US Secretary of State Lee Satterfield said, "Students from around the world have chosen the United States as the top destination for international study. International education is a vehicle that promotes peace and cross-cultural connections and provides the tools necessary to address the shared challenges of our time."
