On Wednesday, euthanasia was added to the list with the Senate approving the so-called "Dignified Death" bill, garnering 20 votes in favor out of a total of 31 legislators present, passing a law approved by the lower Chamber of Representatives in August. The vote came after 10 hours of debate on an issue several lawmakers called “the most difficult.” The discussion was largely respectful and often emotional, though some onlookers watching the debate cried out "murderers" after the vote passed. Elsewhere in Latin America, courts in Colombia and Ecuador have decriminalized euthanasia without passing laws to legalize the practice, while Cuba allows for terminal patients to refuse being kept alive artificially. An initiative of the ruling leftist Frente Amplio, the legislation finally passed after a years-long battle, with fierce opposition mainly among the religious right. A recent poll showed more than 60 percent of Uruguayans support legal euthanasia, with only 24 percent opposed. The bill allows assisted suicide for adult Uruguayan citizens or residents who are mentally competent and in the terminal stage of an incurable disease that causes them suffering. Uruguayan Beatriz Gelos, a 71-year-old who has battled neurodegenerative ALS for two decades, told AFP the law was “compassionate, very humane.” In a wheelchair and speaking with a faltering voice, she said opponents “have no idea what it's like to live like this.” Another proponent is Monica Canepa, whose son Pablo, 39, has been paralyzed by an incurable disease.
Left-wing politician Yamandu Orsi was elected president of Uruguay, official results showed on Sunday, in a rebuke by voters of five years of conservative rule.

Uruguayans went to the polls for the second round of voting in what became a tight race between Orsi, of the Frente Amplio (Broad Front) alliance, and Alvaro Delgado of the National Party, a member of outgoing President Luis Lacalle Pou's centre-right Republican Coalition.

Delgado meanwhile conceded defeat, saying he was sending "a big hug and a greeting to Yamandu Orsi."

Though the election will shift the balance of power in Uruguay, analysts did not foresee a massive change in the country's economic direction, with Orsi having previously promised "change that will not be radical."

Both candidates pledged to fight crime linked to drug trafficking and to boost economic growth, which is recovering from the slowdown brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and a historic drought.

With 94.4 per cent of ballots counted, Orsi won 1,123,420 votes compared to Delgado's 1,042,001, the country's Electoral Court said.

CONMEBOL has opened an investigation into the ugly brawl that took place after the Copa America 2024 second semifinal match between Colombia and Uruguay on Thursday (Jul 11), at the Bank of America Stadium, North Carolina. Post the match, Striker Darwin Nunez was among the Uruguay players, also involving Ronald Araujo and Jose Maria Gimenez, who were seen punching fans in the stands. Some Colombian fans were seen hurling caps, cans, and punches at the Uruguay players when they were walking towards the changing room after a disappointing 1-0 loss. The incident escalated when Nunez entered the stand and threw punches at some fans before also being joined by his two teammates. Thus, the security officials jumped in and had to intervene the two sides. Reportedly, some Colombian fans were abusing the families of the players. CONMEBOL opens investigation for 'unacceptable' brawl after Colombia vs Uruguay Copa America semifinal

Ten-man Colombia defeated Uruguay 1-0 to reach the final of the Copa America for the first time in 23 years after an ill-tempered semi-final on Wednesday. A 39th-minute Jefferson Lerma header sealed victory for the Colombians, who will now face holders Argentina in Sunday's final in Miami.

It was an anarchic semi-final played in front of a packed and passionate crowd which ended with scuffles on the field and fighting in the stands, including several players who had climbed in among supporters amid the flying punches.

Colombia, despite having Daniel Munoz sent off just before the interval and facing plenty of Uruguay pressure, hung on for a famous victory to the delight of their massive following of fans.

The downtown streets of the North Carolina city were packed with partying fans in bright yellow Colombia jerseys hours before the kick-off.

Inside the 74,800 capacity Bank of America Stadium, it was like a home game in Bogota with only pockets of Uruguayan supporters breaking up the wall of yellow on all four sides of the venue.

Not surprisingly in such an atmosphere, Colombia started strongly with their livewire Liverpool winger Luis Diaz doing well to wriggle some space for a cross on the left, finding Daniel Munoz at the back post but the full-back's header was off target.

Uruguay were, as always, a threat on the counter-attack and their Liverpool star, Darwin Nunez, was close to finishing off one break when Rodrigo Bentancur found him with a clever pass but the forward poked his shot wide.

Nunez had another opening when Maximiliano Araujo played him clear in the inside-right channel but the striker rushed his shot, blasting high and wide.

At the other end, Colombia forced a turnover which led to James Rodriguez curling in a cross from the right but Jhon Cordoba's header was off target.

- Lerma breakthrough -

The breakthrough came in the 39th minute when Lerma rose majestically above Jose Maria Gimenez and powerfully headed home Rodriguez's corner. It was the sixth assist of the tournament for Rodriguez with the former Real Madrid midfielder beating the record for most assists in a single Copa, which was set by Lionel Messi in 2021.

Colombia looked to make the most of their momentum with Richard Rios forcing a save out of Uruguay keeper Sergio Rochet, after being played in by Munoz.

But having been so influential down the right in the opening half, Munoz lost his head completely, just before the break, picking up a second yellow card, after landing an elbow on Manuel Ugarte.

It was a moment of madness which left Colombia to defend their lead with just 10 men for the entire second half.

Colombia coach Nestor Lorenzo took off Rodriguez, who was also on a yellow card, in the 62nd minute as Uruguay gradually began to turn their numerical advantage into real pressure.

Nicolas de la Cruz threatened with a low drive before substitute Luis Suarez clipped the outside of the post with a drive from the edge of the box after good work from Federico Valverde. Valverde, the Real Madrid midfielder, then went close himself with a low drive as Colombia's back-line continued to ride their luck.

Giveaway from Uruguay keeper and fell to Mateus Uribe, who despite time and space placed his shot wide of the post.

In stoppage time Uruguay had a great chance to force penalties when Nunez laid the ball off to substitute Giorgian de Arrascaeta on the edge of the box but he leaned back and put his shot over the bar.

There was still time for Uribe to waste another chance to make sure of the win, this time hitting the bar in the final minute, but he will be forgiven his wastefulness by the delirious Colombian supporters.

"I was and will always be blessed to have worn this shirt to represent what I love most in El Murido, my country. Football: Nunez helps Uruguay upset Brazil in 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers

Neymar's participation in the highly-anticipated AFC Champions League match in Mumbai is in jeopardy after the star Brazilian footballer suffered a nasty knee injury during the World Cup qualifiers match against Uruguay on Tuesday (Oct 18).

Neymar tripped and fell during a run at the Centenario Stadium in the 44th minute of the match which quickly turned more serious than first anticipated. After the physios and the medical staff came out to attend to him, it was decided to take him off the game. A stretcher was called in and Neymar was ushered out of the turf. Cameras caught him crying as the striker could not contribute to the Selecao's cause who eventually lost the contest 0-2.

"Let's hope it's nothing serious. He's an important player for us, we're very fond of him. He's been suffering a lot from injuries and when he starts to pick up the pace he gets injured again," Brazil captain Casemiro told reporters after the match.

Meanwhile, Brazil team doctor Lasmar informed that a second round of tests was required to have a clear picture of Neymar's injury.

“We did all the tests and we will repeat them tomorrow. Those 24 hours are key to see how his knee will respond, how swollen it will be and what images will show. Let's wait for the exams with calmness, evaluate with calmness and tell you once we have a diagnosis," Lasmar said, as quoted by the AP.

Neymar's nasty injury puts his participation in AFC Champions League in India in doubt

Uruguay captain Andres Vilaseca said facing New Zealand in the final match of their World Cup campaign was the perfect way to round out the tournament and that Los Teros would fight for every minute of Thursday's clash. Uruguay troubled France in their opening 27-12 loss to the tournament hosts, led Italy 17-7 at halftime before going down 38-17, and tasted victory in a 36-26 win over Namibia in Lyon last week.

Centre Vilaseca said Uruguay had a plan to take the game to New Zealand, who need a bonus-point win on Thursday to be guaranteed a quarter-final spot, but the most important element of it was their attitude to the contest.

"This team is prepared to fight the All Blacks. When we can, where we can. It is our last bullet, before our World Cup is over," he told reporters on Tuesday. "I'll be happy if Uruguay fights everything and comes out empty. That's the goal."

Vilaseca said it was a dream to play New Zealand for the first time in a test and that Los Teros had something special planned for when they faced the haka before the game. "I love that they put out the best team possible," he added. "For us, it is a unique opportunity and I am happy for the respect they have shown us."

Coach Esteban Meneses made seven changes to his starting lineup for Thursday's game at OL Stadium, largely reverting to the side that impressed against France and Italy. Uruguay promise All Blacks a fight in final match of their Rugby World Cup campaign

It was all going horribly wrong for Italy as they trailed Uruguay by 10 points at the break in their Rugby World Cup Pool A encounter on Wednesday but a halftime reckoning got them back on track before they powered to a 38-17 victory. A penalty try and yellow cards for Niccolo Cannone and Danilo Fischetti left Italy chasing the game and the interval brought about a change in their approach.

"We got back into the changing room and we said we screwed it up and we handled it, just embraced the challenge," captain Michele Lamaro said. "I think we stepped back into the field with confidence, you know, stick together every single moment, win the little battles to win the final war."

Coach Kieran Crowley was disappointed with Italy's poor discipline but praised his defence for holding out. "You can't afford two players off the field. One of them was just ill-discipline, the second one you could argue but the referee made the decision so no problem," Crowley said. "But you know, we’ve got to be better than that because you're going to give away points.

"It was a hell of an effort from them because we only gave away seven points with 13 players so you know that defence was pretty good."

Two wins from their opening two games, along with two bonus points set Italy up nicely for their remaining fixtures with New Zealand and France. "I think we've got 10 points, if you asked me before to have 10 points after two games I would have taken it," Lamaro said. "It's unbelievable the energy this group has, the way we are together, the way we live together. It's something unbelievable."

Lamaro, who scored the first try after the break to begin the comeback, also had plenty of praise for Italy's opponents. "I told all the Uruguayan guys they can be proud of their performance, they put us under a lot of pressure but in these moments, what counts the most is how strong is the team and in the second half we showed that and smashed everything we could. "This is a real group, we're a family. It was a really tough game."

Italy now have time to recover before they take on New Zealand on Sept. 29. For now, the Azzurri and their 25-year-old captain will enjoy what they have already achieved. "It's unbelievable. I am young but without all these players, I couldn't do anything. I'm really proud of the boys and I'll share this moment for the rest of my life with them."

Rugby World Cup: Captain Michele Lamaro lauds Italy's second-half comeback against Uruguay

Thousands of dead Magellanic penguins have washed up dead in Uruguay, leaving authorities alarmed and puzzled. Science Alert reported more than 2,000 dead penguins that showed up on the beaches had “tremendously thin skins” and empty stomachs, leading to speculations that the penguins might have died of starvation.

More than 2,000 dead penguins wash ashore in Uruguay, cause remains unknown

Days after announcing plans to melt down a bronze eagle recovered from a sunken Nazi ship dating back to World War II, Uruguayan authorities have abandoned the initiative. The plan drew concern from both cultural and political spheres.

President Luis Lacalle Pou last Friday announced that the 350-kilogram (770-pound) "symbol of violence and war" will be recast into a "symbol of peace and union." The eagle, with a Nazi hakenkreuz, clutched in its talons, once adorned the stern of the Admiral Graf Spee, a renowned battleship involved in a significant naval encounter during the early stages of the war, as reported by AFP.

However, on Sunday, the president said, "There is an overwhelming majority that does not share this decision" to melt and recast the eagle.

The Admiral Graf Spee's captain, Hans Langsdorff, made the decision to scuttle the battleship on December 17, 1939, following the Battle of the River Plate. Thirteen years ago, the sculpture of the two-meter-tall (6.5-foot-tall) bird was discovered after a decade-long search in the River Plate off the coast of Montevideo.

In 2019, a court ruling determined that the bronze eagle should be sold, with the proceeds to be divided equally between the government and the salvage team. This distribution was stipulated in an agreement signed by the salvagers and the Uruguayan navy in 2004. However, the treasure hunters later filed a lawsuit, alleging that the government had not honoured the agreement. Last year, Uruguay's Supreme Court ruled that the bronze eagle belonged to the state, settling the ownership dispute.

President Lacalle Pou had announced that renowned Uruguayan artist, Pablo Atchugarry was selected to create the peace dove using the melted bronze from the eagle. The transformation was expected to be completed by November, turning a once-controversial symbol of war into a powerful emblem of peace.

This initiative, prior to the shelving, attempted to show Uruguay's commitment to promoting harmony and unity, as it repurposes a historical artifact with deep ties to a turbulent period in human history. The transformation of the bronze eagle into a peace dove represents a tangible symbol of hope and serves as a reminder of the importance of working towards a more peaceful future.

Historical significance

In 1939, the massive statue that once adorned the prow of the Nazi battleship Graf Spee met its watery grave off the coast of Uruguay. However, more than seven decades later, a private salvage company successfully retrieved the bronze symbol from the seabed in 2006, reported the Mirror.

The impressive artifact, weighing between 300 to 400 kilograms and measuring nine feet in width, had remained in the custody of Alfredo Etchegaray, who led the recovery effort. During this time, it was stored in a heavily guarded military warehouse as authorities deliberated its fate.

After enduring a lengthy legal battle, the Supreme Court recently rendered its verdict, declaring that the Uruguayan state is the rightful owner of the salvaged statue. The ruling brought closure to the dispute and paved the way for determining its future.

While the next steps for the recovered piece remain undecided, the Uruguayan government now holds the authority to determine its fate. The statue's historical significance and potential display as a symbol of remembrance or education are among the possibilities under consideration.

The long journey of this remarkable artifact, which lay hidden beneath the sea for over 75 years, serves as a testament to the efforts of salvagers and the preservation of history. Its recovery and legal resolution mark a significant milestone, ensuring that the statue will find a new place in Uruguay's historical narrative.

The transformation of the bronze eagle into a peace dove represents a tangible symbol of hope and serves as a reminder of the importance of working towards a more peaceful future. Historical significance In 1939, the massive statue that once adorned the prow of the Nazi battleship Graf Spee met its watery grave off the coast of Uruguay. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:
