<p>Iran and Pakistan released a joint statement on Wednesday (Apr 24) urging the United Nations Security Council to take stern action against Israel stating that the country had targeted neighbouring countries and foreign diplomatic facilities "illegally".</p>

<p>The development came following Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's three-day visit to Pakistan amid an escalation of tensions in the Middle East.</p>

<p>"Recognising that the irresponsible act of the Israeli regime forces was a major escalation in an already volatile region, both sides called on the UN Security Council to prevent the Israeli regime from its adventurism in the region and its illegal acts attacking its neighbours...," Iran and Pakistan said in their joint statement released by Pakistan's foreign ministry.</p>

<p>Last week, explosions were reported in Iran's Isfahan, what Tehran said was an Israeli attack.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, Iran said that it has no plans to retaliate against Israel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The visit by Raisi was aimed at mending ties between neighbouring countries Iran and Pakistan where the Iranian President vowed to give a push to the trade between both countries by $10 billion a year.</p>

<p>"Both sides agreed to increase the volume of bilateral trade to 10 billion U.S. dollars in the next five years," Sharif's office said in a statement after a joint news briefing.</p>

<p>The measure passed&nbsp;on Monday is&nbsp;an alternative resolution drafted by the 10 elected members of the UNSC.&nbsp;Notably, the resolution on Friday was the first time that the US backed a draft that came up for a vote with the word “ceasefire” in it since the beginning of the war.</p>

<h2><strong>UN chief calls for implementation</strong></h2>

<p>The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres after the vote called for the implementation of the resolution and said "failure&nbsp;would be unforgivable."</p>

<p>"The Security Council just approved a long-awaited resolution on Gaza, demanding an immediate ceasefire, and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages," said the UN chief in a post on X.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier on Monday, Guterres&nbsp;said that there is growing international consensus to tell Israel that a ceasefire is necessary and that any ground invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza would lead to a humanitarian disaster.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>During his visit, Guterres also visited the Wihdat camp in Jordan where the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) provides health and education services.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We must strive to keep the one-of-a-kind services that UNRWA provides flowing because that keeps hope flowing. In a darkening world, UNRWA is the one ray of light for millions of people,” said the UN chief. Jordan is home to around 2.4 million Palestinian refugees.</p>

<p>The funding for UNRWA hangs in balance after Israel accused a dozen of the agency’s staff members of being a part of the October 7 Hamas attack against Israel. This has led a number of countries including some of its biggest donors to pause the funding.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Seeking support from the international community for Pakistan’s UNSC bid, Ambassador Akram expressed confidence in Pakistan’s ability to "contribute meaningfully to the UNSC’s mandate for international peace and security".</p>

<p>The reception, which was held at the Pakistani Mission to the UN in New York, was attended by UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Dennis Francis, top diplomats from the UN permanent missions and others, the report said.</p>

<p>The envoy emphasised Pakistan’s consistent efforts to champion the causes of the Global South and promote cooperative multilateralism. He also highlighted the country’s contributions to the UN, the report said.</p>

<p>Akram said Pakistan’s foreign policy is “rooted in the principles of the UN Charter, including the non-use or threat of force in international relations, respect for sovereignty, and territorial integrity, right to self-determination and non-interference in internal affairs of states”.</p>

<p>He mentioned Pakistan’s services to key UN bodies, including the UNSC, Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Human Rights Council and Group of 77 besides the country’s significant contributions to UN peacekeeping missions, with over 200,000 service members, serving in 46 missions worldwide, the report said.</p>

<p>Narrating her experience about surviving the conflict, Kira told The Guardian that she was waiting for her school bus when she heard explosions. Kira spent about a month sheltering, hiding in houses, and basements after Russian forces started pounding Mariupol. The 14-year-old's father was killed in the conflict, and the family had to leave his body behind as they fled.</p>

<p>Ilya told the Guardian that his home was destroyed. “I’d lived in that home many years. I loved this house, and this horrible thing had happened. It was really scary,” he said.</p>

<p>The boy was captured by Russian soldiers. The 11-year-old said that one of the soldiers tried to give him a poisoned chocolate, and he ended up in a hospital. The boy was rescued by his grandmother.</p>

<p>Children have been the biggest victims of the Russia-Ukraine war which started on Feb 24, 2022. The conflict will mark its second anniversary on Saturday. According to UNICEF, at least 545 children have been killed, and at least 1,156 children have been injured.</p>
