President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia on Wednesday of plotting potentially catastrophic attacks on Ukrainian nuclear plants, in a defiant UN address in which he denounced bids to impose peace from the outside.

Zelensky sought to rally support among world leaders at their annual gathering in New York as his concerns grow, weeks before a US election that could sharply shift the stance of Ukraine's main backer.

Speaking from the UN rostrum in a black polo jacket, Zelensky said that Ukrainian intelligence has found that Russia is scanning the country's nuclear infrastructure by satellite.

Russian President Vladimir Putin "does seem to be planning attacks on our nuclear power plants and the infrastructure, aiming to disconnect the plants from the power grid," Zelensky said.

"Any critical incident in the energy system could lead to a nuclear disaster, a day like that must never come," Zelensky said.

"Moscow needs to understand this, and this depends in part on your determination to put pressure on the aggressor," he told the General Assembly.

Russia captured the giant Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant soon after its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Russia in recent weeks has been pounding Ukraine's electricity grid, in what Western and Ukrainian officials describe as an attempt to leave the country shivering during the winter.

Zelensky on Thursday will head to the White House to see President Joe Biden and present what he describes as a "victory plan" that shows a path forward for Ukraine.

In his UN address, Zelensky singled out China and Brazil as he questioned the "true interest" of countries that have been pressing Ukraine to negotiate with Russia.

Employing the language of the Global South, Zelensky said: "You will not boost your power at Ukraine's expense, and the world has already been through colonial wars and conspiracies of great powers at the expense of those who are small."

"Ukrainians will never accept -- will never accept -- why anyone in the world believes that such a brutal colonial past, which suits no one today, can be imposed on Ukraine now," Zelensky said.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told a Security Council session on Tuesday that diplomacy was the only solution.

Zelensky last year flew to the General Assembly in a dramatic first wartime appearance and, while he maintains star power, the political landscape has changed.

Donald Trump, running again for president, on Wednesday called Zelensky the "greatest salesman on Earth."

"Every time Zelensky comes to the United States, he walks away with $100 billion," Trump said, claiming "we're stuck in that war unless I'm president."

The United States has provided around $175 billion in both military and economic assistance to Ukraine since Russia invaded in February 2022, and Biden has ruled out sending troops.

Trump in the past has voiced admiration for Putin and, during his 2017-2021 presidency, was impeached for the first time over delaying aid to Ukraine to press Zelensky to dig up dirt on Biden.

Zelensky said he hoped to see Trump while in the United States and explain that the war is more complicated.

Zelensky has sharply criticised Trump's running mate, J D&nbsp;Vance, who has said bluntly that he does not care about Ukraine and that the United States should focus instead on confronting China.

"Let Mr&nbsp;Vance read up on the history of the Second World War, when a country was forced to give part of its territory to one particular person," Zelensky told The New Yorker.&nbsp;

In Germany, the second-largest contributor of military aid to Ukraine, Chancellor Olaf Scholz is also facing pressure from parties opposed to support for Kyiv.

Britain has been among the most robust supporters of Ukraine. Foreign Secretary David Lammy told AFP that his government was committed to helping "to put Ukraine in the strongest possible position" as winter approaches.

Modi is scheduled to travel to New York later this month and address a mega community event on September 22 at the 16,000-seater Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island. He will also address the UN’s landmark 'Summit of the Future' that is being convened at the world body’s headquarters on September 22 and 23.

A provisional list of speakers for the General Debate of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) issued by the U.N. in July had said that Modi would address the high-level debate on September 26. However, according to a revised provisional list of speakers issued by the U.N. on Friday (September 6, 2024), External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is now expected to address the General Debate on September 28.

A note signed by Under Secretary General for General Assembly and Conference Management Movses Abelian accompanying the list said that the revised list of speakers "has been prepared by taking into account the changes in the level of representation (upgrades and downgrades) and reflects exchanges among Member States".

This year, the General Debate of the 79th UNGA session will take place from September 24 to 30.

Brazil, traditionally the first speaker at the debate, will open the high-level session on September 24, followed by the US, with President Joe Biden delivering his current term’s final address to global leaders from the iconic UN podium before his country heads to presidential elections in November.

Modi took the oath of office for a historic third term as India’s prime minister in June and had last addressed the annual UNGA session in September 2021. He had visited the UN headquarters on June 21 last year, leading the historic Yoga Day commemoration at the North Lawn at the world body’s headquarters before heading to Washington DC for a State Visit hosted by Biden.

Guterres is convening the ambitious Summit of the Future at the UN headquarters ahead of the high-level week, with action days slated for September 20 and 21 and the summit scheduled on September 22 and 23.

World leaders will convene at the United Nations to adopt the Pact for the Future, which will include a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations as annexes.

"The summit is a high-level event, bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future," the U.N. said.

Over 24,000 members of the Indian diaspora have signed up for the community event in Long Island to attend Modi's address.

The Indian-American Community of USA (IACU) said in a statement that registrations for the 'Modi&amp;US Progress Together’ event have come through 590 community organisations, all of whom have signed up as 'Welcome Partners', from across the United States.

Indian PM Narendra Modi won't address the UNGA session; EAM Jaishankar to speak instead

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be visiting the US later this month to deliver a speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), a report in The Times of Israel has claimed, citing government officials.&nbsp;

The 79th session of the UNGA where world leaders will gather in New York will open on September 10 with Netanyahu expected to speak on September 26.

Netanyahu is expected to meet political bigwigs from across the globe on the sidelines of the session. Bibi last arrived in the US in late July for high-level meetings with US President Joe Biden and others.

Danny Danon, Israeli ambassador to the UN who replaced Gilad Erdan, hinted last month that plans were in motion for Netanyahu to address the gathering.&nbsp;

United Nations unanimously adopts first global resolution on artificial intelligence

India on Friday (Mar 15) said that the phobia against any faith or religion is not restricted to the Abrahamic religions as the nation abstained from voting on a draft resolution aimed at adopting 'Measures to combat Islamophobia' in the UN General Assembly.&nbsp;

Pakistan had introduced the resolution in the UN General Assembly and it was co-sponsored by China.

The statement was made by India's permanent representative to the UN Ruchira Kamboj while explaining the position of New Delhi during the voting on the resolution.&nbsp;

Speaking at the the UN General Assembly's 61st plenary session, Kamboj said that the modern world has been witnessing unequal developments and escalation in geopolitical tension which have given rise to "intolerance, discrimination and violence" on the basis of people's belief or religion.

"India as a proud champion of pluralism firmly upholds the principle of equal protection and promotion of all religions &amp; all faiths. Our rich history as a pluralistic and democratic nation in embracing diverse religions has long served a refuge for those persecuted for their faith...This principle isn't merely a facet of our culture, it is enshrined within the Constitution of India," said Ruchira Kamboj, while speaking at the UN.

"We condemn all acts motivated by anti-Semitism, Christianophobia or Islamophobia," said Kamboj.

"Clear evidence shows over decades that followers of non-Abrahamic religion have also been affected by religio phobia. This has led to emergence of contemporary forms of religious phobia, particularly anti-Hindu, anti-Buddhist, and anti-Sikh elements. These contemporary forms of religion phobia are evident in the increasing attacks on religious places such as Gurudwaras, monasteries and temples as well as the spreading of hatred and disinformation against non-Abrahamic religions in many countries," said India's Permanent Representative to the UN.

In support of her statement, Kamboj spoke about the reports of attacks on Sikh pilgrims, destruction of gurdwaras and damage to deities at temples which have been emerging lately.

"The destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas, violations of gurdwara premises, massacres of Sikh pilgrims in gurdwaras, attacks on temples, and the glorification of breaking idols in temples all contribute to the rise of contemporary forms of religiophobia against non-Abrahamic religions," the ambassador said.

"It is crucial to recognise that Hinduism...Buddhism... and Sikhism...are all subject to religiophobia. It is time to acknowledge the prevalence of religiophobia rather than just single out one... While the issue of Islamophobia is undoubtedly significant, we must acknowledge that other religions are also facing discrimination and violence. Allocating resources solely to combat Islamophobia while neglecting similar challenges faced by other faiths might inadvertently perpetuate a sense of exclusion and inequality," she added.&nbsp;

India at the United Nations General Assembly strongly condemned the rising civilian casualties of the Israel-Hamas war and said that the alarming humanitarian crisis was "clearly unacceptable".

Speaking at the UNGA meeting on Tuesday, India's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj said, "The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has led to a large-scale loss of civilian lives, especially women and children, and has resulted in an alarming humanitarian crisis."

"This is clearly unacceptable, and we have strongly condemned the deaths of civilians," added the Indian envoy.

We've also provided us dollars 5 million, including the USD 2.5 million we provided in end December 2023 to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees in the Near east, which will go to support the agency's core programs and services, including education, health care, relief and social services provided to Palestinian refugees,"&nbsp;said India's permanent envoy to the UN.

Voicing India's support for the two-state solution, Kamboj said it can only be achieved "through direct and meaningful negotiations between both sides."

"The message that India has conveyed since the start of this conflict is clear and consistent. It is important to prevent escalation, to ensure continued delivery of humanitarian aid, and to work towards an early restoration of peace and stability. A peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy is the only way forward," she said.

"By reaffirming India's firm commitment to achieving a just, peaceful and lasting solution to the Israel-Palestine issue. We firmly believe that only a two-state solution achieved through direct and meaningful negotiations between both sides on final status issues, will deliver an enduring peace that the people of Israel and Palestine desire and deserve. For this, we urge the parties to de-escalate, eschew violence and work towards creating conditions for an early resumption of direct peace negotiations," added Kamboj.

The resolution pointed out that Israel has not adhered to UN Security Council resolution 497. UNSC in 1981, decided that the "Israeli decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights is null and void and without international legal effect."&nbsp;

The 1981 resolution came after Israel Knesset on December 14, 1981, passed the Golan Heights Law.

At the time, the resolution termed Israel the "occupying power" and urged that the country "should rescind forthwith its decision."&nbsp;

The 1981 resolution also reaffirmed that the acquisition of territory by force is "inadmissible, in accordance with the United Nations Charter, the principles of international law, and relevant Security Council resolutions."&nbsp;

<h2>What do the two resolutions say?</h2>

Meanwhile, the Jordanian resolution, which was backed by 40 member states, called for an “immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce”. It also demanded compliance with international humanitarian law amid the ongoing war as well as provisions to supply aid to Gaza.&nbsp;

The Jordan-authored resolution also called for the “immediate and unconditional release” of all civilians held captive. However, the resolution did not mention Hamas’ attacks on southern Israel.&nbsp;

While these resolutions are not binding or represent the official position of the UNGA until adopted they hold political weight. This comes as the pressure on Israel has been ramped up in recent days after it said that it would launch a “ground operation” in Gaza.

<h2>What happened?</h2>

The Canada-led resolution failed after managing to garner enough votes with 88 nations in favour, 55 against, and 23 nations abstaining. On the other hand, the Jordanian resolution was adopted by the UNGA with 120 votes in favour, 14 against and 45 abstentions.

General Assembly&nbsp;stressed on the “importance of preventing further destabilization and escalation of violence in the region”, urging “all parties to exercise maximum restraint and upon all those with influence on them to work toward this objective.”

This comes amid fears that the war between Israel and Hamas could expand to the rest of the region. It has also called on Israel to cancel its order to civilians in northern Gaza – as many as 1.1 million people – to move to the south of the Palestinian territory.&nbsp;

The General Assembly “firmly rejects any attempts at the forced transfer of the Palestinian civilian population,” the resolution said. It also called for the “immediate and unconditional release of all civilians who are being illegally held captive,” but did not mention Hamas anywhere in the text.&nbsp;

<h2>Israel slams ‘ridiculous’ resolution</h2>

Gilad Erdan, Israel’s permanent representative to the UN, reiterated the country’s right to defend itself and slammed the resolution which does not mention Hamas’ attacks which was one of the worst ones that Israel has witnessed in its 75-year-old history.

“This ridiculous resolution has the audacity to call for a truce, the goal for this resolution’s truce is that Israel should cease to defend itself, so Hamas can light us on fire,” said Erdan. “Why are you defending murderers? Why are you defending terrorists…? What is going on here?”&nbsp;

He also said that Israel is “closely monitoring” the humanitarian situation in Gaza, “and we know that there is no humanitarian crisis in accordance with humanitarian law trusting the reports coming out of is exactly like trusting reports from ISIS,” referring to the Islamic State militant group.&nbsp;

<h2>Hamas, Palestinian Authority welcome decision</h2>

Hamas and the Palestinian Authority welcomed the adoption of the Jordanian resolution. “We demand its immediate application to allow the entry of fuel and humanitarian aid for civilians,” said the Palestinian militant group in a statement.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Authority Israel’s campaign against the Palestinian people “reaches a new peak of brutality,” there was “a solid international position rejecting Israel's unhinged aggression”.

UN adopts resolution calling for ‘humanitarian truce’ between Israel and Hamas. Here's what happened

Russia was unable to regain its seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) as the UN General Assembly (UNGA) rejected its bid. Russia was ousted from UNHRC after it invaded Ukraine last year.

Russia was competing with Bulgaria and Albania for two open spots for Eastern Europe regional group. It nonetheless received 83 votes in its favour from UNGA's 193 members.

The election for the body's 2024-2026 term had been viewed as a test of what Moscow contended was quiet support despite fierce Western-led criticism over its brutal assault on its neighbor.

The vote was held just days after a Russian missile attack targeted a Ukrainian village of Groza. More than 50 people died in the attack when global attention had shifted to Israel-Hamas war.&nbsp;

Albanian ambassador Ferit Hoxha said earlier that UN General Assembly faced an important choice" to "demonstrate that it is not ready to take an arsonist for a firefighter."

Albania received 123 votes while Bulgaria received 160.

Forty-seven members of the Human Rights Council are allocated by region. Usually, each regional group pre-selects its own candidates which are typically approved by the General Assembly.

But this year, there were more candidates than there were seats in two such groups.

In Latin America, Brazil, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Peru were vying for three seats, and in Eastern Europe, Albania, Bulgaria and Russia sought two seats.

The vote takes place by secret ballot.

Russia was ousted from UNHRC in April last year. At the time 93 countries had voted to suspend Russia while 24 had opposed the move.

The vote defending the territorial integrity of Ukraine drew approval from about 140 countries.

The United States has on number of occasions criticised the UNHRC and has alleged slant against Israel. However, under President Joe Biden, the USA rejoined the group &nbsp;after pullout by former president Donald Trump.

"Russia's reelection to that body, while it openly continues to commit war crimes and other atrocities, would be an ugly stain that would undermine the credibility of the institution and the United Nations," senior US diplomat Robert Wood said.

However, Vassily Nebenzia, the Russian Ambassador to the UN, asserted that there "are no beacons of democracy or rogue states, as is sometimes being portrayed."&nbsp;

"No member-state can claim to be immune from human rights violations. But the solution is to strengthen international regulation," he said.
