Colombian President Gustavo Petro used his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday (Sep 23) to deliver an extraordinary demand. He demanded that US President Donald Trump must face a criminal investigation for ordering strikes on boats in the Caribbean that killed more than a dozen people in recent days. According to Petro, those killed were unarmed “poor young people,” some of them believed to be Colombian, who died when US forces attacked at least three vessels in waters off Venezuela. Trump has described the operations as part of the US's campaign against drug trafficking and against 'narcoterrorists'. In a major development, the US Secret Service on Tuesday (Sep 23) said it had dismantled a network of more than 100,000 SIM cards that could have crashed New York's telecommunications network ahead of the UN General Assembly. The Advanced Threat Interdiction Unit, along with the Department of Homeland Security, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the New York Police Department, and other state and local law enforcement agencies, were involved in the operation. The team traced the swatting signals to an apartment just outside New York City, but no one was found in that apartment. The secret service said that these devices were capable of disabling cell towers, launching denial-of-service attacks, and enabling encrypted communication between threat actors — including possible nation-state links. Concentrated within 35 miles of the ongoing UN General Assembly, the threat prompted rapid intervention by the Secret Service’s Advanced Threat Interdiction Unit. The meeting between the leaders marked the first in-person interaction after Trump announced 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods, citing the Russian oil purchases and unfair trade policies of New Delhi.Last week on Tuesday (Sep 17), US and Indian officials held discussions to negotiate a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) between the two countries in New Delhi. Following the meeting, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal hailed the bond between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, stressing that every situation will be dealt “satisfactorily” and talks were ongoing.&nbsp;Days earlier, Trump announced an annual $100,000 fee for H-1B skilled worker visas, a move expected to result in major repercussions for the tech industry, where this permit is widespread. In a statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said that the US decision can have humanitarian consequences.The H-1B visas allow companies to sponsor workers from abroad with specialised skills, including scientists, engineers, and computer programmers, to work in the United States. The visa permits workers to be in the US for three years initially, although it can be extended to six. About 85,000 individuals are awarded H-1B visas every year based on a lottery system, with Indians accounting for about three-quarters of the recipients.Although the administration clarified that the reform in the system will only impact new visa applicants, the fee hike has caused fear among Indians in the US and disheartened the American dream for many.&nbsp;

International Day Of Non-Violence 2024: Check history, significance and key facts

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed Russia's support for India and Brazil's bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

In his address at the 79th United Nations General Assembly on, he stressed that a "fairer world order" requires the expansion of the representation of the Global South in the UNSC.

Lavrov stated, "We are not stepping away from dialogue with the West. In July, upon the proposal of Russia, there was an open debate in the Security Council on the subject of building a more just, more sustainable world order. We believe it is important to begin the discussion that has begun in the UN as well as in other platforms. A fairer world order undoubtedly requires the expansion of the representation of the Global South in the UN Security Council."

"We support our position in favour of the candidacies of Brazil and India, while at the same time taking a positive decision on the well-known initiatives of the African Union. However, of course, we cannot even talk about any additional seats for Western countries, who are already excessively over-represented within the Security Council," he added.

Notably, India has long sought a permanent seat in the Security Council to better represent the interests of the developing world. The nation's quest has gained momentum with support from the international community. Earlier on Friday, Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay voiced support for India's bid for a permanent seat on the UNSC.

In his address, Lavrov accused the West of trampling the values of globalisation. He said that the nations of the West have imposed a sanctions war against half of the nations in the world and is using the dollar as a "weapon."

Sergey Lavrov said, "Just like Ban Ki-moon and Kofi Annan in the past, the current Secretary-General advanced his own initiative, under the slogan 'rebooting the global cooperation'. It is an excellent slogan, who could be opposed to that."

"But, what global cooperation can we really talk about at a time when the West has trampled all of these unshakeable values of globalisation that they have been telling us about for so many years from this...trying to convince us that they would ensure equal access for everyone to the goods of contemporary civilisation, where is the inviability of property, the presumption of innocence, freedom of speech, access to information, fair competition on markets with understandable and changing rules," he added.

Stressing that West has been using dollar as a weapon, Lavrov said, "The Secretary-General is talking about the global cooperation. At the sametime, the countries of the West have unleashed a varitable sanctions war against a good half, if not the majority of the states in the world and the dollar which was advertised to us as the heritage and good of all of humanity has been worsely tranformed as a weapon."

Calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's peace formula "hopeless," Lavrov urged Russia's partners to take into account the facts about the real causes of the situation.

"We value the sincere aim of a number of our partners to advance mediation initiatives. We value their constructive focus on results, unlike the hopeless Zelenskyy peace formula. We call upon friends in their further efforts to fully take into account the facts about the real causes of the situation," he said.

In 2022, Zelensky&nbsp;presented Ukraine's 10-point peace formula to world leaders at the G20 Summit in Indonesia's Bali. The 10-point peace formula includes a path to nuclear safety and food security, a special tribunal for alleged Russian war crimes and a final peace treaty with Moscow.

He said that the nations of the West have imposed a sanctions war against half of the nations in the world and is using the dollar as a "weapon." Sergey Lavrov said, "Just like Ban Ki-moon and Kofi Annan in the past, the current Secretary-General advanced his own initiative, under the slogan 'rebooting the global cooperation'. It is an excellent slogan, who could be opposed to that." Also Read | ‘GDP measured in radicalisation,’ India’s Jaishankar takes a dig at Pakistan in UNGA address "But, what global cooperation can we really talk about at a time when the West has trampled all of these unshakeable values of globalisation that they have been telling us about for so many years from this...trying to convince us that they would ensure equal access for everyone to the goods of contemporary civilisation, where is the inviability of property, the presumption of innocence, freedom of speech, access to information, fair competition on markets with understandable and changing rules," he added. Stressing that West has been using dollar as a weapon, Lavrov said, "The Secretary-General is talking about the global cooperation. At the sametime, the countries of the West have unleashed a varitable sanctions war against a good half, if not the majority of the states in the world and the dollar which was advertised to us as the heritage and good of all of humanity has been worsely tranformed as a weapon." Calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's peace formula "hopeless," Lavrov urged Russia's partners to take into account the facts about the real causes of the situation. "We value the sincere aim of a number of our partners to advance mediation initiatives. We value their constructive focus on results, unlike the hopeless Zelenskyy peace formula. We call upon friends in their further efforts to fully take into account the facts about the real causes of the situation," he said. In 2022, Zelensky presented Ukraine's 10-point peace formula to world leaders at the G20 Summit in Indonesia's Bali. The 10-point peace formula includes a path to nuclear safety and food security, a special tribunal for alleged Russian war crimes and a final peace treaty with Moscow. President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia on Wednesday of plotting potentially catastrophic attacks on Ukrainian nuclear plants, in a defiant UN address in which he denounced bids to impose peace from the outside.

Zelensky sought to rally support among world leaders at their annual gathering in New York as his concerns grow, weeks before a US election that could sharply shift the stance of Ukraine's main backer.

Speaking from the UN rostrum in a black polo jacket, Zelensky said that Ukrainian intelligence has found that Russia is scanning the country's nuclear infrastructure by satellite.

Russian President Vladimir Putin "does seem to be planning attacks on our nuclear power plants and the infrastructure, aiming to disconnect the plants from the power grid," Zelensky said.

"Any critical incident in the energy system could lead to a nuclear disaster, a day like that must never come," Zelensky said.

"Moscow needs to understand this, and this depends in part on your determination to put pressure on the aggressor," he told the General Assembly.

Russia captured the giant Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant soon after its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Russia in recent weeks has been pounding Ukraine's electricity grid, in what Western and Ukrainian officials describe as an attempt to leave the country shivering during the winter.

<h2>'Never accept' deal from outside</h2>

Zelensky on Thursday will head to the White House to see President Joe Biden and present what he describes as a "victory plan" that shows a path forward for Ukraine.

In his UN address, Zelensky singled out China and Brazil as he questioned the "true interest" of countries that have been pressing Ukraine to negotiate with Russia.

Employing the language of the Global South, Zelensky said: "You will not boost your power at Ukraine's expense, and the world has already been through colonial wars and conspiracies of great powers at the expense of those who are small."

"Ukrainians will never accept -- will never accept -- why anyone in the world believes that such a brutal colonial past, which suits no one today, can be imposed on Ukraine now," Zelensky said.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told a Security Council session on Tuesday that diplomacy was the only solution.

Zelensky last year flew to the General Assembly in a dramatic first wartime appearance and, while he maintains star power, the political landscape has changed.

Donald Trump, running again for president, on Wednesday called Zelensky the "greatest salesman on Earth."

"Every time Zelensky comes to the United States, he walks away with $100 billion," Trump said, claiming "we're stuck in that war unless I'm president."

The United States has provided around $175 billion in both military and economic assistance to Ukraine since Russia invaded in February 2022, and Biden has ruled out sending troops.

Trump in the past has voiced admiration for Putin and, during his 2017-2021 presidency, was impeached for the first time over delaying aid to Ukraine to press Zelensky to dig up dirt on Biden.

Zelensky said he hoped to see Trump while in the United States and explain that the war is more complicated.

Zelensky has sharply criticised Trump's running mate, J D&nbsp;Vance, who has said bluntly that he does not care about Ukraine and that the United States should focus instead on confronting China.

"Let Mr&nbsp;Vance read up on the history of the Second World War, when a country was forced to give part of its territory to one particular person," Zelensky told The New Yorker.&nbsp;

In Germany, the second-largest contributor of military aid to Ukraine, Chancellor Olaf Scholz is also facing pressure from parties opposed to support for Kyiv.

Britain has been among the most robust supporters of Ukraine. Foreign Secretary David Lammy told AFP that his government was committed to helping "to put Ukraine in the strongest possible position" as winter approaches.

<h2>Lebanon crisis</h2>

The annual extravaganza marks a swansong for Biden, 81, who has passed the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris to face Trump in the November 5 election.

The summit comes against the backdrop of chaos in the Middle East as Israel ramps up attacks on the Iran-backed Lebanese militia Hezbollah, killing hundreds and prompting a mass exodus of people.

The UN Security Council will hold a special session on Wednesday on Lebanon, as the United States says it hopes to present ideas for de-escalation.

Wednesday will also see talks at the UN on two other hotspots -- Sudan and Haiti.

The United States is looking for ways to drum up long-term financial support for stabilization efforts in violence-ravaged Haiti after Kenya began a long-awaited policing mission.

Zelensky says will 'never accept deal' imposed on Ukraine, alleges Russia plot to target nuclear plants

United States President Joe Biden on Tuesday (Sep 24) addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)&nbsp;in New York for the last time. The 81-year-old leader started off by recounting conflicts of the world when he first entered&nbsp;public office around five decades ago. Speaking of how the US and Vietnam buried the hatchet during the Vietnam War, Biden said, “Things can get better. We should never forget that. I’ve seen that throughout my career.”

In his last speech before the United Nations General Assembly as the US president, Biden&nbsp;called on nations to band together amid conflict in the Middle East, the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, and rising concerns about China’s influence.

"I truly believe we’re at another inflection point in world history. The choices we make today will determine our future," Biden said.

<h2>Vows to support Ukraine</h2>

Biden in his final address to the UN vowed to support Ukraine, which has been at war with Russia for over two years now. The US president&nbsp;said “our NATO allies and partners and 50 plus nations stood up” against Russia.

“Most importantly, the Ukrainian people stood up. I asked the people in this chamber to stand up for them,” Biden added.

He declared that Russian President&nbsp;Vladimir Putin’s war had failed and that Ukraine was still free. “He set out to weaken NATO, but NATO is bigger, stronger, and more united than ever before, with two new members, Finland and Sweden,” said the Democratic leader.

<h2>Gaza&nbsp;war: It's&nbsp;high time to ease sufferings</h2>

Biden spoke about the October 7 Hamas on Israel, in which hundreds of innocent civilians were killed and hundreds were taken hostage. “I’ve met with the families of those hostages. I’ve grieved with them,” the US president&nbsp;said. “They’re going through hell.”

He also talked about the ‘hell’ the Gazans were going through as a result of the devastating war.

“Innocent civilians in Gaza are also going through hell. Thousands and thousands killed, including aid workers. Too many families dislocated, crowding in the tents, facing a dire humanitarian situation.”

Biden said now it was high time that both parties come to the talking table and ease the sufferings in Gaza.

<h2>On dropping out of presidential race</h2>

Biden defended his decision to drop out of the presidential race by saying staying in power is not the most important thing.

“Being president has been the honour of my life,” the US president&nbsp;said. “There’s so much more I want to get done.”

“As much as I love the job, I love my country more. I decided, after 50 years of public service, it’s time for a new generation of leadership to take my nation forward,” he added.
