Trump's ultimatum to Putin: End war or face tariff

US President Donald Trump has claimed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is attempting to withdraw from a rare earth minerals agreement with the United States.
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One on Sunday, Trump warned that if Zelenskyy tries to renegotiate the deal, he will face “big, big problems.”
“I think Zelensky, by the way, he’s trying to back out of the rare earth deal, and if he does that, he’s got some problems, big, big problems,” Trump stated.

The agreement, which was expected to grant the US access to Ukraine’s oil, gas, and mineral resources through a joint investment fund, was originally set to be signed on 28 February. However, the signing was postponed following a dispute at the White House, where US Vice President JD Vance reportedly criticised Zelenskyy for being ungrateful.

Zelensky insists on protecting Ukraine’s EU accession

Zelensky has maintained that Ukraine will not accept any agreement that could jeopardise its bid to join the European Union.
“Nothing that could endanger…Ukraine’s accession to the EU can be accepted,” he said at a press conference in Kyiv on Friday.

Zelensky dismissed a proposal by Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that Ukraine could have an interim government overseen by the UN, calling this a ploy to delay peace.

Earlier in the day, Putin suggested placing Ukraine under temporary external governance led by the UN as part of efforts to negotiate a peace settlement.
Putin reiterated his stance that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy lacks legitimacy since his term expired last year.
He further argued that any agreement signed with the current Ukrainian leadership could be challenged by future governments, calling for new elections under international supervision.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday criticised statements by White House envoy Steve Witkoff, who recently praised Russian leader Vladimir Putin and appeared to legitimise Russia's annexation of some Ukrainian regions.
The comments by Witkoff, in an interview with the right-wing podcast host Tucker Carlson, were seen in Kyiv as another sign of how far some in US President Donald Trump's administration have shifted away from Ukraine toward Russia.
"A lot of the information spread by some people and the person you mentioned... are very much in line with the messages of the Kremlin," Zelensky said, answering a question on the interview given by Witkoff.

Trump's envoy said "there's a view within the country of Russia that these are Russian territories".
He cited a series of referendums conducted by Russia in occupied territories that purported to show support for Moscow's rule, but were condemned as illegitimate by Ukraine and much of the international community.
"No one can legitimise these referendums because they were held at gunpoint," Zelensky said, adding that "no one recognises these territories as Russian".
