Usually, Ukraine celebrates Christmas every January 7 as do Russian citizens. However, amid Moscow's intensifying offensive which has entered the 11th month, some Orthodox Ukrainians are celebrating Christmas on December 25, like many Christians across the globe do. Back in October, the leadership of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine had agreed to allow the faithful to celebrate the festival on December 25, a report by news agency Associated Press said on Sunday (December 25). For some Ukrainians, changing the dates represented a separation from Russia, its culture and religion. “What began on February 24, the full-scale invasion, is an awakening and an understanding that we can no longer be part of the Russian world,” Olena Paliy, a resident from Bobrytsya city, told the Associated Press. ALSO READ| At the heart of Ukraine, a Christmas tree in a hideout In Bobrytsya, some members of the faith promoted the change in date within the local church and when a vote was taken last week, 200 out of 204 people voted in favour of adopting the Christmas date as December 25. The local church in the city had recently transitioned to being a part of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, with no ties to Russia. A local official in Bobrytsya- Roman Ivanenko- said the change in date was a big step as never in Ukraine's history, it had the same dates for the celebration of Christmas with the whole Christian world. Kherson shelling: Death toll climbs to 10 The death toll after Russia struck Kherson on Saturday has now climbed to 10 and 55 people are reported to have been injured. Russian missiles struck around a busy market and started a fire in the city, which was recaptured by Ukrainian forces in November. "It is the real life of Ukraine... The world must see and understand what absolute evil we are fighting against," he wrote on Telegram on Saturday. Meanwhile, Vladimir Saldo, the Russian-installed head of the Kherson region, wrote on Telegram that the shelling was "a disgusting provocation" by Kyiv used to blame Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (December 22) spoke of ending the Ukraine war. He hinted that this would inevitably involve a diplomatic solution. Putin's words have come a day after US President Joe Biden hosted Ukrainian President Voldymyr Zelensky in the White House. Ukraine is soon to get more help from the US as Ukrainian troops fight against the Russians.

"Our goal is not to spin the flywheel of military conflict, but, on the contrary, to end this war," Putin said. "We will strive for an end to this, and the sooner the better, of course."

"I have said many times: the intensification of hostilities leads to unjustified losses," Putin told reporters.

"All armed conflicts end one way or another with some kind of negotiations on the diplomatic track," he added. "Sooner or later, any parties in a state of conflict sit down and make an agreement. The sooner this realization comes to those who oppose us, the better. We have never given up on this."

Putin wants to 'end this war', hints at diplomatic efforts, after Ukraine prez visits US

Russia said that providing Ukraine with Patriot missiles will not stop Russia from achieving its goal in the ongoing war. This comes after the United States announced that it will provide 1.85 billion dollars in military aid to Ukraine including the Patriot air defense system.

War in Ukraine: How does the patriot missile defence system work?

The United States is all set to approve an aid package of over $45 billion for Ukraine just days after President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit. The US senate has already promised Zelensky that it will provide Ukraine with Patriot missiles in order to help their fight in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

The US has already sent over $50 billion in aid to Ukraine this year and the military and economic assistance will be part of the planned aids for 2023. United States President Joe Biden has also imposed strict sanctions on Russian politicians and the oil and gas supply from Moscow.

The main point of discussion between Zelensky and Biden during the recent visit was the acquisition of Patriot missiles in order to counter the Russian attacks. The two leaders were able to reach an understanding with Washington also providing Kyiv with modern battle tanks and long-range missiles called ATACMS. The bill is expected to pass the senate with unanimous support.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has already condemned the US for interfering in the conflict and he said that Russia will be looking to find a way to counter the newly-acquired Patriot missiles.

"Our goal is not to spin the flywheel of military conflict, but, on the contrary, to end this war."

Meanwhile, Ukraine has allegedly forced Russian forces to retreat from the outskirts of Kyiv and Kharkiv. The Ukrainian government said that the military repelled attacks in 17 settlements.

US to approve Ukraine aid of $45bn including arms after Volodymyr Zelensky visit

A government spending bill, amounting to $1.7 trillion, was passed by the US Senate on Thursday to avert the government’s partial shutdown. The bill has now been sent to US President Joe Biden for his official signature and to the House for its approval. The legislation will provide funding for various US military and non-military programmes till September 30, 2023. Meanwhile, the legislation includes wartime aid worth $44.9 billion which will be provided to Ukraine and banning the usage of social media applications like TikTok, which are run owned by the Chinese, on devices of the federal government.

The passing of the bill was slowed down after an amendment was introduced by conservative Republican Mike Lee for slowing immigration. This gave the Democrats an opportunity to introduce an amendment for boosting law enforcement agencies’ funds, which are located on the border.

Ukraine war: Official killed in car blast in Russia-controlled Lyubimivka

US President Joe Biden met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Wednesday for a bilateral meeting, vowing to "continue to strengthen Ukraine's ability to defend itself — particularly air defence."

Biden expressed America’s support to Ukraine’s cause, along with allies “in Europe, Japan and other places to make sure you have the financial humanitarian and security assistance that you needed”.

He also announced that the US will be sending the Patriot air defence missile systems to Ukraine to help strengthen its defences against the Russian forces.

The system is part of $1.85 billion in security assistance unveiled in parallel with a visit to Washington by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, his first trip outside the country since Russia invaded in February.

The announcement is a significant victory for Kyiv, which had repeatedly pushed Washington for the Patriot system, and a strong sign of US support for Ukraine.

"Today's assistance for the first time includes the Patriot Air Defense System, capable of bringing down cruise missiles, short-range ballistic missiles, and aircraft at a significantly higher ceiling than previously provided air defense systems," US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the Patriot announcement, saying the system "will strengthen our air defense significantly."

"This is a very important step to create a secure air space for Ukraine," he told journalists through a translator at a news conference alongside President Joe Biden at the White House.

Putin is trying to use 'winter as a weapon': Biden

President Vladimir Putin is "trying to use winter as a weapon, but the Ukrainian people continue to inspire the world," Biden said.

"I mean that sincerely -- not just inspire us but inspire the world with their courage and how they have chosen their resilience and resolve for their future," he added.

Earlier in the day, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced an additional $1.85 billion in security assistance for Ukraine.

Zelensky, in his part, thanked Biden for his "big support and leadership across Europe."

"I think it's very difficult to understand what does it mean when we say appreciate but you really have to feel it," Zelensky said in English.

Zelensky also presented an award to Biden that he said was handed to him by a "real hero" —a captain on the ground of a HIMARS rocket system that has been a game-changer on the field.

"He's very brave and he said, give it to very brave president," Zelensky said.

Gravitas: Ukrainian President to address U.S. Congress

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the United States Congress on Thursday (December 22) during his visit to Washington amid what Russia calls its “special military operation” in Kyiv. The speech, which was a little over 20 minutes, refers to three battles out of which two have historically been the turning point of their respective wars.

Zelensky compared the ongoing fight for the small eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, to the Battle of Saratoga which was fought during the US Revolutionary War against the British. While also comparing the ongoing conflict with Russia to World War II’s Battle of the Bulge.

Battle of Saratoga and fight for Bakhmut

“The Russian military and mercenaries have been taking Bakhmut nonstop since May. They have been taking it day and night, but Bakhmut stands,” said Zelensky had said in his speech. He added, “Just like the Battle of Saratoga, the fight for Bakhmut will change the tragic story of our war for independence and of freedom,”

Referring to the Battle of Saratoga was seen as a turning point in the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) fought by the ‘Patriots’ who wanted to gain independence from Great Britain. After over 150 years of Britain controlling the 13 colonies, once created in the 1600s it was not until the mid-1700s that they began taxing and imposing their laws on the colonies.

This led to years of tensions between the colonies and Britain that eventually culminated in a revolution and subsequent war. On July 4, 1776, after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the colonies officially declared themselves free from the British.

However, at the beginning of the war, Patriots faced many defeats against the strongest militaries in the world at the time with trained soldiers and resources. But the two-part battle was seen as a turning point of the war in favour of the colonists, with support from countries like France. According to the archives, the first one was fought on September 19 and the second on October 7.

Meanwhile, in present-day Ukraine, the battle for Bakhmut has been going on for nearly five months with incessant bombing and civilians fleeing the city which was once reportedly populated with at least 70,000 people has been reduced to nearly 10,000. On the other hand, citing Konrad Muzyka, a Polish military analyst, Reuters reported that even if Russia manages to win, it will be at a great cost.

Furthermore, experts say, there is also a fear that the Kremlin’s forces will use this city as a stepping stone to capturing two bigger cities, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. Additionally, if Ukraine loses then it will be cut off from its access to its road and rail supply line intersection in Bakhmut. However, Muzyka says that its strategic value in Russia has also been lessened since August due to Ukraine’s heavy fortification around the region.

“The fighting for Bakhmut is not senseless, but strategically unsound (for Russia) given weak offensive potential and no prospect of breakthrough even if the city is captured,” said Michael Kofman, an expert on the Russian military at a US-based think tank. However, Muzyka says that the battle for this region has become a “battle of attrition”.

Furthermore, the report citing British intelligence says that Bakhmut’s capture has become “primarily a symbolic, political objective” for Moscow, something that could lift morale. While for Ukraine, the experts said this region is partly about constant support from its allies in the West. This comes after Kyiv’s forces have achieved a string of successes in pushing back against Russia.

According to Kofman, “At this stage, Ukraine is the victim of its own recent success, and suffers from heightened expectations of sustained momentum.” Furthermore, the report suggests that Ukraine’s recent success and fewer defeats could be perceived by the West as a stalemate which would then be less willing to extend support to Ukraine as the western countries continue to deal with economic pressures, as a result of this conflict.

Russia-Ukraine conflict and World War II’s Battle of the Bugle

“The Russian tactic is primitive. They burn down and destroy everything they see. They sent thugs to the frontlines. They sent convicts to the war...They threw everything against us – similar to the other tyranny, which in the Battle of the Bulge threw everything it had against the free world,” said the Ukrainian president in his speech.

He added, “Just like the brave American soldiers, which held their lines and fought back Hitler’s forces during the Christmas of 1944, brave Ukrainian soldiers are doing the same to Putin’s forces this Christmas. Ukraine holds its lines and will never surrender!”

The Ukrainian president is referring to the Battle of the Bulge fought between, December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945, which marked the final major counteroffensive by the German forces against the Allied Powers. The battle witnessed heavy fighting and casualties which has also been attributed to the poor weather in the region, however, the Allies prevailed.

Earlier this month, as the conflict continued well into 10 months, Russia ruled out the possibility of a “Christmas ceasefire” and also rejected Ukraine’s calls for the withdrawal of troops with Christmas marking the end of the conflict.

On December 14, in response to questions regarding the possibility of a “Christmas ceasefire” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, “No, no such offers have been received from anybody. This topic is not on the agenda.”

Furthermore, while Zelensky wants Russia to start pulling back by Christmas, Moscow wants Ukraine to accept the loss of territory to Russia before any progress can be made. Therefore, with the raging war in eastern and southern Ukraine and little movement on either side as well as no ongoing little possibility of talks, the conflict might continue throughout the holiday season.

Explained: Why does Zelensky invoke Battles of Saratoga and World War II in the US Congress speech?

The Russian government on Thursday stated that the Patriot missile systems which will be supplied to Ukraine by the United States, as announced during a visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Washington on Wednesday, will not contribute to settling the war between Kyiv and Moscow, and won't stop Russia from achieving its targets.

While speaking to the reporters, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that there was no sign of willingness to initiate peace talks during the visit of Zelensky and it is evident that the United States is engaged in a proxy war with Russia “to the last Ukrainian”, and that Zelensky and US President Joe Biden are unwilling to hear “Russia’s concerns”.

“We can say with regret that so far neither President (Joe) Biden nor President Zelensky has said even a few words that could be perceived as potential readiness to listen to Russia’s concerns,” Peskov said.

“Not a single word was heard warning Zelensky against the continued shelling of residential buildings in towns and villages in Donbas and there were no real calls for peace. This suggests that the United States is continuing its line of de facto fighting an indirect war with Russia to the last Ukrainian,” he further stated.

Hours before the visit of Zelensky to the US, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that next year Moscow will continue developing the country's military potential and the nuclear forces' combat readiness. Zelensky’s US visit was his first international trip since Ukraine was invaded by Russia on February 24.
